No one here actually thinks she meant that when it loses its charge the controller needs to be replaced? (Judging by the posts, you all do.) Even if it's not completely clear, she has a university degree most likely, give her a little credit. She's saying that unlike an XBox controller, you can't easily replace the battery pack. I look for stupid people all the time. This isn't it folks.
If that's true then I feel much better, but that still is no reason to say it should be avoided at all costs. I've never heard of a PS3 controller battery dying permanently, and I have many friends who own one, I owned one for two years, and apparently everyone who commented on the article (on the site, that is) in question agrees. Obviously it would happen eventually, but not for a LONG time. In that case, we can file this under "just stupid", instead of "double-facepalm with a side of immense wrath towards mankind stupid."

You don't think that they're messing with you?
They're likely all giddy with delight at your outrage right now.
That's the new 'professional' for you: An amateur with a steadier paycheck.
It would be more reasonable to call them out on the joke not being funny.

Actually, reading the quote in full context, I get the impression she is talking about the far-flung future when the battery stops charging. This looks more like bad wording that stupidity.
Also, as a counter-point to her cost point, how much money do you spend on normal AA batteries for a 360 or Wii controller in the amount of time that it takes for that battery to actually die and stop charging? And in the estimated amount of time that that takes, are you even going to need a new controller, or will the PS4 be out already? Those batteries tend to last for a long fucking time.

I plan to get a PS 3 for xmas and I too saw that review, I had the audacity to believe that what seems like a reliable source had the correct information, but I just figured I would have to buy a charge kit, now, just to be 100% clear, can your PS 3 controllers be charged right out of the box or is the charger sold seperatly, yes I'm sure you can I just want to be sure so I don't end up looking like a jackass xmas morning
Yeah, man you just plug them into the front of the PS3 with a USB-to-Mini-USB cable that comes with the system. If you don't have one for some reason (buying it used, maybe?) just buy one on NewEgg or MonoPrice for like $1 or $2. It's WAY less expensive than the $20-$30 charge kit for the 360.

Thanks, but there was really nothing else to say beyond the picture and caption. My mind was officially blown by the stupidity of that article.

Seriously, it gets worse if you look past the obvious mistakes

she also mentioned that they are "GLUED" shut, I can totally picture someone in a sony factory taking a controller that is designed with a removable battery pack, and gluing it shut with krazy glue while muttering "That'll show that ***** Anne Kadet." and she called them "The Playstation 3's REMOTE CONTROL"

REMOTE CONTROL!

Seriously, what the fuck lady, anybody have a shovel? I need to beat the crap out of her.

Conspiracy my ass, do you really think this would turn people AWAY from PS3? If anything, it is free publicity for the PS3 when people see the funny "yahoo fail" story that will be popping up everywhere.

When I saw the picture on the Destructoid article, I could NOT stop laughing, I laughed for like 10 minutes.

Did anyone else find it that funny? That look of sheer disbelief like he'd just seen death itself coupled with the article content just killed me.

What's worse, the cupholder on the PS3 is broken - it can't come out like the one in my computer does. Funny that the manual calls it a Blu-Ray.

Any chance they mean when the "batteries dies" they mean when it breaks and becomes inoperatible or unrechargable? You can't exactly open up a PS3 Dual Shock controller and replace it's battery if it shorts out for some reason. (Though I've never tried/needed to.)

The article (I did a little sleuthing because even though I'm a PC gamer and don't own a console I cannot STAND having factual errors like this out and about) originated from a website called Smart Money and was published December 2 ( http://www.smartmoney.com/spending/technology/A-Grinchs-Gift-Guide/ ). They have an e-mail contact for the site, not the author: [email protected] I suggest that everyone who cares about factual reporting e-mail them with a well reasoned letter with something none offensive in the subject line like "A Grinch's Gift Guide Factual Error". Hopefully we can get them to remove that erroneous statement. If anyone knows a way to get in touch with Sony to let them know that a fairly large and reputable website is passing incorrect information about their product, we should do that to. But again this info is only for those of you who care.
It appears SmartMoney.com posted a correction, although not a very good one.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the controller for the Sony Playstation 3 is glued shut; it's screwed shut, but the manufacturer recommends never removing the screws and never removing the battery until disposing of the controller and recycling the battery. The article also didn't specify that the battery in question is rechargeable.
The article didn't specify it was rechargeable because the author thought gamers just threw it away when it ran out of batteries.

True, anyone who reads past the PS3 part sees that the entire article is about popular products that are rendered costly to repair in the event of a possible breakdown. And in that sense she is right to say that it is a bit more troublesome when your controller battery craps out (permanently) after prolonged use, because it isn't completely clear what to do at this point.
What IS stupid about the article is the fact that she seems to think that buying a new controller after it dies makes the PS3 a lousy gift, when in actuality, it should work for several thousand hours (up to 8000 if you treat them right), making it a pretty good deal (even at $55) compared to other controllers with more replaceable batteries.
Example: she says replaceable AA batteries are better, but imagine how much money it would cost to keep a 360 controller or WiiMote charged for more than 4000 hours (a lot, depending on your battery of choice).

Also, it should be noted that you can find DualShock3 batteries online for $10, and that the manual shows how to replace them (with just a screwdriver, since it isn't 'glued' like this university graduate stated)

Holy crap, there's a video on that site where you can see the author call the PS3 a "Technological Armageddon". WTF
