No one here actually thinks she meant that when it loses its charge the controller needs to be replaced? (Judging by the posts, you all do.) Even if it's not completely clear, she has a university degree most likely, give her a little credit. She's saying that unlike an XBox controller, you can't easily replace the battery pack. I look for stupid people all the time. This isn't it folks.

If that's true then I feel much better, but that still is no reason to say it should be avoided at all costs. I've never heard of a PS3 controller battery dying permanently, and I have many friends who own one, I owned one for two years, and apparently everyone who commented on the article (on the site, that is) in question agrees. Obviously it would happen eventually, but not for a LONG time. In that case, we can file this under "just stupid", instead of "double-facepalm with a side of immense wrath towards mankind stupid."

Actually, reading the quote in full context, I get the impression she is talking about the far-flung future when the battery stops charging. This looks more like bad wording that stupidity.
Also, as a counter-point to her cost point, how much money do you spend on normal AA batteries for a 360 or Wii controller in the amount of time that it takes for that battery to actually die and stop charging? And in the estimated amount of time that that takes, are you even going to need a new controller, or will the PS4 be out already? Those batteries tend to last for a long fucking time.

I plan to get a PS 3 for xmas and I too saw that review, I had the audacity to believe that what seems like a reliable source had the correct information, but I just figured I would have to buy a charge kit, now, just to be 100% clear, can your PS 3 controllers be charged right out of the box or is the charger sold seperatly, yes I'm sure you can I just want to be sure so I don't end up looking like a jackass xmas morning

Yeah, man you just plug them into the front of the PS3 with a USB-to-Mini-USB cable that comes with the system. If you don't have one for some reason (buying it used, maybe?) just buy one on NewEgg or MonoPrice for like $1 or $2. It's WAY less expensive than the $20-$30 charge kit for the 360.

When I saw the picture on the Destructoid article, I could NOT stop laughing, I laughed for like 10 minutes.

Did anyone else find it that funny? That look of sheer disbelief like he'd just seen death itself coupled with the article content just killed me.

Any chance they mean when the "batteries dies" they mean when it breaks and becomes inoperatible or unrechargable? You can't exactly open up a PS3 Dual Shock controller and replace it's battery if it shorts out for some reason. (Though I've never tried/needed to.)

The article (I did a little sleuthing because even though I'm a PC gamer and don't own a console I cannot STAND having factual errors like this out and about) originated from a website called Smart Money and was published December 2 ( http://www.smartmoney.com/spending/technology/A-Grinchs-Gift-Guide/ ). They have an e-mail contact for the site, not the author: [email protected] I suggest that everyone who cares about factual reporting e-mail them with a well reasoned letter with something none offensive in the subject line like "A Grinch's Gift Guide Factual Error". Hopefully we can get them to remove that erroneous statement. If anyone knows a way to get in touch with Sony to let them know that a fairly large and reputable website is passing incorrect information about their product, we should do that to. But again this info is only for those of you who care.

It appears SmartMoney.com posted a correction, although not a very good one.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the controller for the Sony Playstation 3 is glued shut; it's screwed shut, but the manufacturer recommends never removing the screws and never removing the battery until disposing of the controller and recycling the battery. The article also didn't specify that the battery in question is rechargeable.

The article didn't specify it was rechargeable because the author thought gamers just threw it away when it ran out of batteries.
