I will put it as simple as possible.

You smoke. You are an idiot.

Let me explain why.

1.) You STINK.
2.) You LITTER.
3.) You do not respect the health of people around you.
4.) You do not respect YOUR health.

Debate it or not all of these things are true. Now if you were SMART you would quit and tell other smokers to smarten up and do the same.
... Wow... You are not the type of person I'd want to associate with.

I know smart people that smoke/do not litter/respect the health of others.

Yeah, they stink when they smoke. And they obviously don't respect their own health as much as your average person. But to automatically assume they litter and don't respect the health of others is just downright bigoted.

Dear lord, why are most non smokers such zealous assholes?! Not trying to generalize here, I know a lot of people don't fit this stereotype, but damn, the escapist has some pretty closed minded members.
I smoke occasionally, maybe a cig a week, after a hard test for example. I have both friends that smoke and those who do not. If you think you have the right to get up in my face and start yelling at me for destroying your lungs, you have another thing coming. We are standing in an open space outside, I'm standing as far away from any entrances as possible, so I am not in your way, and you still choose to go out of your way to ruin my day, you deserve to die in a fire.
Why can't anybody just worry about their own god damn business?!

From all you've posted you're not a bad person, puff up all you want since you don't blow it in other people's faces. If only people were like you where I worked...

The difference between you and me is that we weigh pros and cons differently (or at least that is how I see it):

Pros:
Stress relief
Seriously can't think of anything else...

Cons:
Damage lungs and many other major and minor organs
Very expensive
Dirty and smelly
Seen as "stupid" and "uncool" where i come from

Being a smoker the only thing that really annoys me about the anti smoke crusaders, is the fact that they think I don't know that smoking is bad for me, I understand why people are concerned about second hand smoke, or don't like the smell or any basically anything else, but to think that in this day and age a smoker doesn't know that smoking is bad for your health and will probably kill you not only stupid, it makes me want to punch them in their stupid face for not shutting the fuck up about it.

As a former smoker of over ten years, I know and understand the aggravation of some random jackass on the street getting all up in your business because you just happen to be standing there with a lit cigarette, and damn, aren't they always the most smug, self-righteous bastards when they get that little shit-eating grin and remind you for the umpteenth time that smoking is gonna kill ya?

But the really aggravating thing is, they're right! I see that now. Life while smoking was pretty much like living with a grey haze tinting everything and tainting all my experiences. My very life was tied to my ability to make sure I could have a smoke when I needed it.

Life after smoking is like switching from B&W to Color TV. It's a phenomenal change, and everything is brighter, better, and more vivid without it. No, really, it's true. Not smoking makes everything better. Everything. Except social smoking circles when everyone is drinking. Those are pretty boring now. Big loss, huh.

Quit now! It's totally worth everything to drop that shit like a dirty old shoe, and do it while it's still only a small habit. Don't let it get any bigger, or get away from you. Living a life bound like a prisoner to a nicotine habit really sucks.

Smokers get lumped into the same generalised category of "stupid idiots who kill other people with their smoke and smell and litter" etc much like video gamers are all competitive muppets who stay up 'til 4am and stay indoors and don't socialise. I don't smoke myself but know that people who do smoke are like people who don't: different. You get the idiots who throw cigarette ends onto the floor and blow smoke into peoples' faces and you get the people who don't smoke around non-smokers and dispose of used cigarettes nicely without throwing them on the floor. And for non-smokers, you get the idiots who throw chocolate wrappers on the floor and who spit in peoples' faces and you get the people who respect others and throw their litter in the bin. Not every smoker is a wheezy moron who only cares about themself but they seem to get lumped into one negative category.

I wouldn't expect a smoker to go out of their way to protect me from their smoke. I do ask that my smoker friends don't smoke in my car, but I would never ask them not to smoke if I was around at theirs. Long story short: if they're not harming you, shut the fuck up and let them get on with it.

Hmm, you do know second hand smoke kills right? yeah I'd say that makes you a pretty bad person. Switch to the patch so you can get your drug fix without causing harm to others and then you can be welcomed back into the realm of good people.

Did you develop the smokers cough yet? where it sounds like you're trying to heave up your own lungs because they don't work right anymore?

Short answer? No.

Long answer? As long as you don't blow your smoke in my face and I can easily avoid it, I don't really care. And yes, I read the OP and know you don't practice the above mentioned behavior, thank you for that. My dad used to smoke for as long as I can remember but he kicked the habit less than a year ago during a lengthy stay in the hospital. I never thought less of him for smoking, although I wasn't too thrilled about the health effects it had on him. Not that he seemed to suffer any adverse effects from smoking until that trip to the hospital.

I used to hate the barrage of "smoking kills" -rants we had to listen to at school when I was a kid. I never even considered touching the stuff but having some nasty ass pictures showed to you with the mental connection of "your dad's lungs look like this" was a little rough on me when growing up.

As for absolutists? They're just as alright as everyone else, provided they don't shove their "holier than thou" attitude in your face. Had an English teacher in high school who wouldn't shut up about how she didn't drink, smoke, eat meat blah blah blah. Really annoyed me sometimes.

I follow the same rules with this as with democracy in general. Take free speech as an example. Say whatever the fuck you want but the minute you spoil someone else's day you have crossed the line, *****.
Smoke whatever and whenever the fuck you want, but would you kindly leave the room so MY capillaries don't go black.

My own opinions about smoking aside (there's a reason so many people want to quit), as long as you don't disturb anyone else with it, it's fine.

And I have to agree with the post above me.

having smoked, i think you should stop giving a flying fuck about what others think of you in this dept, and indeed in any other department in your life, because it's your life, not theirs!!!

As I say to anybody, friend or otherwise - I don't care if you smoke, it's your life, not mine.

Just keep it to yourself and remember that we don't smoke for a multitude of reasons, so have some common courtesy and keep it to yourself. Don't stand where the wind blows into crowds or back into the room.

All of the people I know who do smoke uphold to that, so it's not a problem for me or others. Although one thing some of them do that pisses me off is when cigarette butts are dropped on the floor/lobbed out of the car window; just as much as people who spit their gum out onto the street. That is a bad manky habit - pinch the heat out with some foil then find a fucking bin, there's usually one at the end of every other street and we don't all have to tread in that shit.

My mom smoke cigarettes. My dad occasionally smokes a cigar. Now that I'm eighteen I have been offered by both of them, and have turned down both of their offers. I don't know. A lot of people might think I'm self righteous for my choice (my brothers do), but I just can't stand the smell of smoke. If you want to smoke, go right ahead. I mean, there's worse hobbies for someone to follow ( like terrorism, hehe). I simply don't see the appeal.

Pretty straightforward really..

You're doing something that personally, I consider disgusting. It makes no difference to their lives, but obviously people are going to condemn people for doing something they find revolting. Not all that different than people who have sex with farm animals. (note, I'm not comparing smokers to people into bestiality, just the reactions of others) Does the person doing it enjoy it? Of course, does it have any effect on anyone other than that person? Nope. Does that stop the general public from going "what the fuck is wrong with you?". Nope, because people don't start being accepting of nasty things just because the person doing them doesn't share their opinion.

As a guy who works in a gas station, I don't hate smokers. I hate smokers who buy one pack with a $20. Fuck you. I don't have a lot in my register and I have to break a big bill on your smokes. Then again I hate anyone that pays for $7 worth of items with anything bigger than a 10.

Go ahead and smoke, but do you have to do it right next to me while we're waiting for the bus?
