Just the kind of Smash Bros player I despise.
He wouldn't do it if it wasn't effective. He's playing to win. No reason to hate him for it.
For the same reason Wesker in UMvC3 is effective.

Doesn't mean it's not cheap as fuck :D
It's not cheap it's just strategy, if you think you can do it go to a tournament and give it a shot.

I'd never play in a tournament because of just this type of meta bullshit.

Making the other 99% of the game irrelevant because the 1% beats everything else is just ridiculous.

Been a long time... was the the reflecting hexagon? That thing was brilliant. Much hilarity playing against Samus, and especially anyone who threw a pokemon at me without realising it became mine.

I have to agree with you on that. Especially the idiots who say that "items on aren't how the game's ment to be played". (Even though I think the Item Rate is not only on but also at Normal when you first play the game)

OP, is this you? Be honest.

I mean, I'm terrible at Melee, truly, but this guy is supposed to be impressive because... speedruns? What, because he broke the targets? I'm not saying that isn't a good player, but those kinds of cheap tricks he was using make him slightly less interesting to me.

Even the original creators stated that Smash Bros was never intended for competitive play, that's why character balance is all over the place.

When the competitive scene of Melee and Brawl consist of a handful of characters and only one stage, when they're are more than 30 characters and loads of stages...

Well.

Doesn't mean I can't criticise the gameplay ethic behind it all.

Butbutbutbut that's how the pros do it Daystar!

Reminds me of how gay LoL has gotten since I last played. If you don't do everything according to the meta you're doing it wrong. Fuck e-sports.
No items!

Final Destination!
I get why people do this so often, and do it myself on occasion, but honestly, a big open platform with no items is pretty boring.

I admit, at one time I was guilty of two of those rules on the list. We were really competitive back then! Don't look at me like that!

Fox's down-B is OP as balls.
I'm fairly sure Falco's (In Brawl) is more OP as he kicks it away.

I think it does, If you've never competed, never appreciated the absolute insane amount of practice it takes to be good at that game, you can't really talk.

Well you can, but it will just be the view of someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about...

Please, that logic is flawed.

That's like saying an astronomer can't truly understand space because he's never been there.

I know all about tiers, the metagame, all of that nonsense.

For a game like UMvC3, which was designed to be a competitive game, that's fine, it's to be expected, because the game is balanced for tournament play. Sure, some things slip through the cracks, but things always do.

Smash Bros was never meant to be competitive, it was never designed to be competitive, the balance is all over the place, so the metagame makes the other 99% of the game irrelevant.

Are you joking with the astronomer thing? Fine if you have your degree in Super Smash Bros or a closely related field then I withdraw my comment.

It doesn't matter whether the developers intended for the game to be played competitively, it is, and if that means players will have to be creative and come up with the moves and strategies themselves, well that's just a plus.

Oh and the tiers in melee can be broken just like any other game, check out taj playing as mewtwo (A very low tier character)

No, but you are stating that I need to be a tournament grade player to appreciate how tournament play works, which is nonsense.

Sports commentators don't tend to be great at the sports they narrate, skill level mean nothing in regards to knowledge.

And of course there's always and exception to the rule, but it doesn't change the fact that using anyone outside of a handful characters will usually end in failure.

Because of this; I wouldn't play a game like this unless it's played as it was intended. And because I think it's more impressive to see someone win when everything isn't exactly as they expect; the true mark of a good player is when they can win while adapting to ever-changing circumstances.

Off topic but I see all the STALKER's avialable on Steam for a steal, which one is the least buggy and the most worth getting?
Call of Pripyat is the least buggy and playable out of the box and unmodded.

Well, this is a problem the Smash community has had since forever. The FGC and Smash community don't seem to get along because of it. Fighting games are made with the focus on competition, while Smash is not.

I don't like how much they have to modify a game's rules to make the game viable for competitive play, but then again, I love that they have succeeded in making the game viable. Despite the controversy, these guys have succeeded in creating something immensely interesting. Just because Sakurai has given up on a competitive Smash, doesn't mean the competitive community should have to. What they have is something they enjoy and are passionate about, far be it from us to take it away from them.

The competitive Pokemon community does the same thing, but to a lesser extent. There are banned Pokemon, banned moves, banned items, and banned combinations of moves. But man, competitive Pokemon is amazing, and I'd hate to see it abandoned.

Despite balance and whatnot, there is a high skill ceiling for these games. Even with a top-tier character like Fox or Metaknight you can't expect to win majors without tons of practice. Melee and Brawl aren't that horribly imbalanced.

At the end of the day, these are just different ways to play these games. There is no right or wrong way to play, as long as you enjoy yourself.

I enjoy the competitive rulesets as well as the game's natural ruleset. It's great that Smash is as modular as it is.

Get them all, play them in release order, mods will fix most bugs, the latest one (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat) is least buggy.

OT: Nothing to add, I'm bad at smash bros and games like it.
