Bayonetta.

Without a doubt, Bayonetta.
I hope it is still Bayonetta for a long time to come.

Heavy Rain. No contest. 17 playthroughs, and I wasn't bored even for a second. Amazing, unique experience.

Now let's wait for the L.A. Noire, and see if Rockstar can top that with mixing GTA with HR (those games look similar), mystery story AND America's 40's which is my favorite setting for any story ever.

That would be Mass Effect 2, due to the simple reason that no game has ever pulled me in like that game did. I have gotten emotionally invested in games before, but this just took it to a whole new level. That, and the fact that, to my mind, the gameplay and structure was damn near flawless.

Other all time favorites:
Super Metroid
Mass Effect
Metal Gear Solid 3
Warcraft 3 and its expansion; The Frozen Throne
Final Fantasy X
Pokémon Gold
Dragon Age Origins
Soul Reaver 2

I haven't played my best game ever yet.

Naming any title at this point is tantamount to saying no game could ever be better. There are probably a lot of amazing games yet to come and since I can't predict the future, I have no way of knowing if one of them will far outstrip anything I've played so far.

Jade Empire, bar none.

I would do terrible, terrible things for a Jade Empire sequel.

"best game ever"? 'fraid I can't do that, chief, but I can give a list of my 5 favorite games in no particular order.

Mass Effect 2
Call of Duty 4
Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne
Halo 2
Knights of the Old Republic

Half-Life 2, W40K: Dawn of War, and Fallout 3 all almost made it.

Surely The Orange Box is a Compilation, it can't be counted as one game :p

Mine's either Link to the Past, Oblivion or something i haven't thought of at the moment.

OT: I'm going to have to call it a draw between Fallout 3 GOTY and Mass Effect 2.
Agreed on the Mass Effect 2 part. That is my #1 game of all time.

either..

Minecraft, Mass Effect or Fallout 3

It almost pains me not to list an assassins creed game but the difficulty is pathetic now.

The three contenders chosen all push innovation to an extent, never before playing Fallout 3 have i experience a karma system that makes even a slight bit of sense and a useful custom build of skills all of which you could need but you decide (like skill trees in an rpg but it feels as if you need them).

I have listed Minecraft as it really is amazing. Building a world of your own from scratch is awesome and the lack of tutorial for me really made the game work, its the best way to learn.
Minecraft doesnt need a tutorial is you're supposed to be in control of everything to an extent, even if the game has a nasty habbit of pushing you into a bunker for the first one or two days it has achieved greatness especially being a beta.

Mass Effect in my head is constantly changing from good to bad, the blend of customisation in guns and armour was good for me and i did playthrough more than thrice aided by the great biotics system which synergises nicely with gunplay but it feels so linear, the story has dialogue options sure but it doesnt achieve anything.

On second thought, Ill choose Fallout 3. Growing up in the Vault isnt a kind of introduction you experience everyday and i do so love my calm introductions to game with action and horror elements such as Half-Life and Blue Shift.

It is a three-way tie between Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One.

Each for different reasons, each a great and unforgettable game.

Hmmmm ....

Metroid Prime. Original Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2: Adventure of Link (simply awesome, unique and ... Link seems much more 'real' and plays an almost anti-hero rather than someone of valour).

There's also Super MB if you're talking sheer gameplay.

Then theres Final Fantasy 6 (Can you seriously say there is a character cooler than Celes?)...

There's also Planescape: Torment.

TES 2 & 3 ... Morrowind really showed people what you can do in a fantasy world rpg and *defined* freeroaming adventure ... with an immersive plot and wonderful landscapes.

And then, of course, there is the immortal Goldeneye for 64.

------------

I'm torn between these games.

Knights of the Old Republic
Dragon Age: Origins
Baldur's gate: Dark Alliance 2
Final Fantasy 1,2,4,5 and 6
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Fallout 3 and New Vegas

I just can't pick, I guess I love me some RPG's.

Ace Combat Zero
Nice to meet people who love these games :)
How do you fare in terms of fighting the Ace squadrons?
Murder them. Only person who pisses me off is Mobius One. Yet to kill him.
Ah, I've been there. No shame in that.

Eventually I mastered his dodge-curve technique, and I can take him down with ease- although the battle in of itself once it gets to that point is about 50/50, we're both really dangerous. My record is 6.44 in Ace difficulty Gauntlet with an S rank, however I've never managed to get anywhere near that taking down Sorcerer.

It's hard for me to pick a SINGLE favorite, but I've got three up there that I love for very different reasons.

First is Bioshock. While the story is good, what I really love about it is the atmosphere. I've never played a game that just absorbed me so completely. Batman Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3, and Half-Life came close, but none of them really compare to the truly crushing atmosphere of Bioshock.

Next is Persona 4. This one I love for the story and characters. The murder-mystery plot is really entertaining, but what really shines is the characters. Persona 4 makes you really CARE about its inhabitants, far more than any other game I've played. I was honestly sad to see the game end, because it meant saying goodbye to characters I had genuinely grown attached to.

Last, but not least, is Pokemon. This one has nothing to do with the world, or it's characters. It's all about the addictive gameplay. Catching new pokemon never loses it's charm, and training a new team always has value. The only thing I would really like to see change with this series is the ability to have more than one save, so I don't have to restart my game every time I feel like playing the story again.

I don't usually declare a 'favorite game' but the games that left the longest/strongest impressions on me were Chrono Trigger, Shadow of the Colossus, and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.

-Everything about Chrono Trigger is worth praise; it has incredible art direction, balanced difficulty, deep gameplay mechanics, a story that's a bit deeper than your usual SNES title, some gameplay variety and replay-ability, and not to mention one of my favorite gaming soundtracks of all time by my favorite gaming composer.

-Shadow of the Colossus was the game that got me to finally play PS2. This is one of the incredibly rare titles that I would deem as "art." I love how the setting and atmosphere tell the story so well, not to mention how well the music successfully drives the emotions of the gamer. The controls definitely has a learning curve, but when mastered, proved to be incredibly intuitive. The colossus design is beyond excellent, from their natural animations to (for the most part,) their largeness that accentuates just how small Wander (the protagonist) is. The strategies required to defeat each colossus are unique and intuitive, especially in the fights that utilize Agro (your horse). Many elements of this game can be analyzed on a deeper level, (personally, I think certain colossi are symbolic, especially the final colossus, which could represent the last of Wander's humanity; not to mention the themes of light and darkness, with more and more dark shadows crowding Wander and white doves surrounding Mono as the game progresses), which I think shows the potential of making games with a sort of literary merit.

-Persona 4 did everything that a sequel should do; every aspect of the gameplay improved and the game felt entirely fresh and independent of its predecessor. Atlus deserves a ton of praise for how maturely the game's story was written. The characters had consistent, believable personalities and ended up being round characters, changing according to their experiences throughout the game. The excellent characterization brought a new depth to the story, exploring themes that are normally almost taboo for video game writing. This is one of the few RPGs where the player can actually 'Role-play,' splitting the game between combat and student life. Both gameplay modes tie in together surprisingly well, where the friendships developed help unlock new personae and adds new combat abilities for the major characters (ex: once you hit a certain level of friendship, a major character will take a dying hit for you if you are low enough in health.)

I've played many great games in my life, but I do not judge a game solely based off of the experience from beginning to end; I also judge a game based off of the amount of time I am still awed by a game. I have been in love with these games long after I put the controller down, which was minimum 2 or 3 years for each game I listed. I honestly cannot declare a favorite though, as my opinion would probably sway each time I take an interest in a different genre.

*I know that my post is long; I tend to found my opinions on many many factors.*

Freelancer has my vote. TF2 is also of high quality and I'm a big fan of the L4D franchise. But Freelancer is king in my books.
