France did "help" in the war, but that doesn't mean they "won the fight for them" if that is what you are implying as French troops were under the command of George Washington. The American War of Independence was the pretty much the only significant war that Britain lost in the modern era (post-renaissance) and I have to admit it was one of those amazing underdog victories and led to a country and system of government that even our English parliament has adopted a lot from.
