Don't take my word for it. I never fired a Five-SeveN, but from what I read a 5.7 round actually has very good stopping power, although different sources have different testimonials. Especially in the case of it's innovative SS190 ammunition, it is bottle nosed and tipped, almost a scaled down 5.56 round. Because of the velocity and shape, it may penetrate dozens of layers of armor but will never overpenetrate. That is because it is weighed down in the core (With a metal ball, FYI making it a literal ball round.) When impact occurs the core shifts out of place, destabilizing the bullet and making it tumble downwards instead of passing through the mark. Thus it dumps possibly all it's kenetic energy into there, and provides the best of five worlds. It's has negligible recoil, armor penetrating capabilities, good stopping power, and abides by the Geneva convention for use in warfare.
Are If you are speaking specifically of the SS190 round (which I believe is the AP version of the round), then it is strictly forbidden in the civilian market for being too capable (as you pointed out).

However, the SS197SR and the hollow points (designation unknown) don't have quite the same characteristics as I do not believe they are built the same way. The SS197SR that I happen to have right in front of me is loaded with a Hornady 40gr. V-Max ballistic tip, so its penetration will probably be less, and it will probably tumble more since the polymer tip seems to be designed to crumple/deform on impact while still keeping the aerodynamics of the round in tact during 'flight.'

I have heard of people loading .223 bullets into spent 5.7x28mm cases, but not only will that void the warranty of a possibly $1000+ handgun, but it can also cause the round to EXPLODE! It's kinda like how people don't usually reload .44 rounds because they are so pressure sensitive.

I should point out that this particular model of Five-Seven is no longer in production (IOM model), and the USG model is far more reliable.

its sort of sad that people are so paranoid they need guns for self defence......

thank god i'm in england.
lol Im not parinoid. Ive been mugged twice in my life, my mother has been mugged once (that I know of), and my grandmother was reciently mugged at gunpoint. Yeah, I have a need to defend myself.

OT: Ill admit Im not a gun nut like most of the other people here, but I hear that S&W make good handguns so when I start looking for guns, Ill start there.

No shit. That's because criminals acquire guns in order to carry out those serious crimes, and that those in bad areas who are more likely to be targets acquire weapons for protection.

Duh.

My first gun was a simple .22 bolt action single shot made by Savage Arms, I refer to it as my vermin sniper, I also have an old break-action 20 gauge shotgun, was my stepdads grandfathers and he passed it to me rather than his kids because he thought I would take better care of it.

In the realm of one I would like, god I would love to have a Thompson, I'm a sucker for the classics.

It was a Super Soaker.
However, If I am to get a real gun (which is rather difficult in Blighty), it will be this deactivated (which is legal in Britain) Lee Enfield No 4 Rifle, as used by British and Commonwealth troops in WW2.

I'm a military historian so it's one of dreams to own something like this. But it would have to be deactivated. A live weapon would terrify me, and kind of go against the whole Pacifism thing.

Well if you never used a gun i would recomend a .22lr: A browking BuckMark or a Ruger 22/45.

But if you really want a handgun for defense, i would NOT recommend a Five Seven, since the 5.7x28 lacks of stopping power and for self defense you need stopping power.
So in my personal opinion you should stick with a handgun made for either the 9x19 or .40 s&w the 9x19 in the right config can deal stopping power.
I would say that should try a S&W MP series they are quite good.

PD: Sry for any mistake but english is not my first tongue.

The moral of the story is ban guns altogether, bar if you have a license. Problem solved.

If I had money, I'd get a pistol to shoot at my lakelot. Or a sniper rifle. I know I sound like one of those losers that only knows about guns from video games and movies, and well... You're right. But is it so wrong that I want to shoot watermelons with sniper rifles? I mean, I have an air pistol and an air rifle, but those just aren't the same.

i've been told by friends and family that the only way i'd ever be allowed to use a gun would be during a zombie apocalypse and because they would be more focused on feeding me to the zombies by making me trip. also, they say with my aim, i could be in an open field a mile from the house they were in, and when i fire, i would somehow hit a gopher that just popped up from the ground, have the shot ricochet off its skull, go through the window, ricochet from wall to wall and room to room until it hit the guy coming out of the bathroom at that instant.

What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

On my 21st birthday i am gonna pick up this lil beauty:

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.

Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.

EDIT: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS ISNT A THREAD ABOUT GUN RIGHTS! IF YOU DONT WANT ONE THEN FINE! STOP JUDGING THOSE WHO WILL BUY ONE OR ALREADY OWN ONE. Take your opinions to the right place, they will be appreciated and this is not the right thread to start a gun ownership debate.
I don't care about people owning guns but I find the comment about how society is progressing to be very narrow minded.

Modern North American society is better then ever. More people have more rights then ever before. Technology has made life easier then ever before. People are healthier and live longer then ever before. Also, people are now safer then ever before.

All in all, the modern society kicks ass.
If you want to get serious then no we are less free than when the British ruled us, I could possibly get fired from a corporate job for saying a female/male coworker is hot, not in a offensive way, just "Yea she is pretty hot" a person can get fired for that, how is that for free speech.
That speech seems to be very free enough. As does the company's right to fire you. You have the right in this country (USA) to say whatever may come to your mind. You do not, however, have the right to dictate peoples reactions to your statements.

...Wait a minute... Aren't we talking about guns here?

Exactly, so where did you go with your previous post?
Ah, touche, good sir. So to you I say, [insert revolver here].

I don't OWN one.
But I shot a gun for the first time over the break: AK-47 and a .22 bolt action.

I shot a rubber gopher target!

First gun I ever fired was an old Smith & Wesson .22 lr pistol.

First gun I ever owned was a 1927 Colt Detective special. It works great but I've only fired it a couple dozen times since it's practically a museum piece. It has "OCSO" engraved on the frame, which I guess means "O____ County Sheriff's Office."

First gun I ever bought for myself was a Walther PPK/S, purely for the cool factor. It has never jammed on me but I understand they have a terrible reputation.

I have one of those. Used to have two. They were my father's. He used them for deer hunting. Amazing machines.

PS - I have apparently forgotten how to write full sentences.

Felons in the US are already legally prohibited from owning guns. Many of the most violent cities in the US also have the strictest gun laws. Why then isn't the problem already solved?

Strict gun laws are still gun laws.

Research some statistics about the crime rates per capita in countries with gun restrictions, like Australia, to America, and enlighten yourself.

Mauser 98. Man I loved that gun. Still play around with it on the range every now and then. When I turn 21 though, I want to get this for self-defense.
