Well, statistics lie. The U.S. has a much higher population than the U.K. or Germany, so it would stand to reason we would have more of everything. Our population is five times the U.K.'s, so we should have five times as many school shootings.
What about Russia? there land mass is about the same as yours (although I am not sure on the population) and I haven't seen anything about them shooting up schools But I only looked on that one website which was from 1996.

Your post made me die a little inside, you expect 5 times as many school shootings? Just so complacently, like it's just part of life and you just have to accept it.

If stats lie, why should we bother linking to any sites sourcing our information?

I know the US isn't street after street of corpses and every person left alive is walking round like a cop in an action film clearing rooms.

I also know you guys have some laws about guns like caliber, type of ammo and maybe automatic weapons but I still think allowing people to own a gun and making it so easy to get one is asking for trouble, now people know how to get them it will be impossible to stop, they can't stop dugs and they have never been legal. (admittedly guns are alot harder to hide)

I know it's mostly to do with drugs and gang wars over territory but no matter were these occur innocent people will be caught in the cross fire, at some point.

It's just a group of people get guns, so people get guns to protect themselves from guns till everybody is just a little tense and thats when people get killed, if nobody had guns in the first place wouldn't it a better place to live?

Can we drop this now 'cos it's kind of off topic, this thread is about your first gun and I unknowing trolled, sorry for that. It's also not going to change anything, gun crime will always be a problem in this messed up world.

Woah, thats pretty sweet. Simo used that gun. If you dont know who Simo is:

I was speaking in terms of population, so Russia has less than one third the people of the U.S. I haven't seen anything about school shootings from Russia, but they aren't big on sharing details of their internal goings-on, especially since they're nearly in a <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechnya>civil war.

Complacency? Well, there are some things that you will never be able to change, so most of the time I don't see the point in caring.

My first rifle....
It is a Savage Mark II .22 LR bolt-action rifle.
I love this thing.
<spoiler= Here it is>http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/06/26/54/26/0006265426700_500X500.jpg
We bought it at a pawn shop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in... 2008, I believe. I will treasure it forever, even when I get my next rifle.

Right, I love that gun. Why?
"Becuase I have nineteen reasons for you not to rob me."
Also, it was fun to go through 38 9mm rounds. That was so fun...
Ah, yes! I went through almost 50, seemed to go by in an instant... unfortunately, I don't actually own it, it was just borrowed. I told my dad that for my next birthday, I want an M9, which they were selling at the range. A .22 would be nice as well, since the guns and ammo are usually really cheap. Some may say that it would make a shitty home defense weapon, to which I argue that I would like to see them take a .22 to the gut and stay standing. Still hurts enough to take you out. Plus, I'm still a beginner, which would make a small caliber pistol a fantastic gun for me.

Anyone got reccomendations, revolvers maybe?

I hear gun crime is massive in the states and I think it's down to the law which gives you the right to carry a gun, I bet your death rate would drop substantially if you took that away.

Maybe I chose my words badly or maybe I have been influenced to much by the media without researching enough.
Another thing to take into account when looking at gun crime in the U.S. is the population. The population of the U.S. is somewhere around double (maybe even more) than the populations of the U.K., Australia, or even Canada (although I am not 100% on Australia... I don't feel like looking it up now). The fact that there are SO many more people wil guns will skew the stats quite a bit. Having around 10,000 firearm related deaths in a year isn't really all that much compared to the population as a whole. However, 10,000 out of the population of the U.K. would be a far larger percentage.

If you also look at population density when compared to a country like the U.K. or Canada, you will also see that there are areas of the country where people simply do not live (quite a few actually). Most violent crime is centered around the denser areas which can be reduced to a number of smaller regions.

I have NEVER seen someone shot due to an argument or any other dispute. I have seen one suicide by firearm, but that guy would have found another more painful way to die if he didn't have a gun, so that's not really even an issue. My point is that most Americans will never witness a death by firearm. Sure, the odds of seeing one may be higher in some areas but for the most part, the U.S. is a safe place.

I just think it's funny how people have this idea that there are people shooting each other all the time here in the U.S. Sure, there are unsafe areas of this country just like any other, but for the most part, you can walk down the street almost anywhere and be perfectly safe. Guns are not as big of a problem as people make them out to be.

If the U.S. would do more to wipe out street gangs, then gun violence would drop DRAMATICALLY. That is one of the largest sources of firearm related violence in the U.S., and that can be traced to a relatively small demographic.
Agree with this man whole heartedly. I've been around and used guns for my entire life, and never been witness to an accident. It all comes down to safety. Contrary to popular belief in other countries, it is difficult to obtain a Class A gun license (the license to carry a firearm) in some states. The chief of police must interview and issue you the license if they feel you need it. I know of other states that allow you to purchase a gun with just a drivers license and a hunters safety course, but those areas are well known for hunting. Not to step on any toes, but no website is going to decisively tell you it's more dangerous to live in the US than other places. Quite contrary I feel safer here than when I traveled about. Anyone who says guns are ruining America, and it is an unsafe country, doesn't live here. It simply isn't true. Honestly I don't understand the hostility towards US civilians from some of the European users or wherever they may happen to be. Come across the pond for a visit, you'll see we're nice people too.
Cheers.

My first gun was a Walther P22. Right now it's the only gun I own.
I like it, it's a nice reliable gun. I use it for target shooting. Since it's .22 LR, the ammo is really cheap. Some one using 9mm bullets would easily spend 5 times as much I did for the same amount of bullets.

I would like to get a .22 LR revolver someday, I don't know when though.
is the walther powerful? seems compact, i never fired a Walther myself. Should check one out if i have an opportunity next time i go to the firing range.

I don't have a real gun (I live in the UK) but downstairs there is a at least 30 years old air rifle that i got off my granddad that says "made in USSR" on it. Its pretty damn awesome and makes holes straight through tin cans.

My first gun, handed down from the grandfather who served in WWII
I wish my grandfather had given me his 1911A1... He wasn't able to smuggle his back home. :(

He did try to ship back an entire dufflebag full of flint lock dueling pistols, but they never made it home. *tear*

Thanks. I was going to list some populations for mathematical clarity, but that would risk derailing this thread even more. At any rate, I'm glad someone understands what I am getting at. :)

on topic; first gun was an anschutz 1451D, .22LR.. everyone should start with a .22LR imo, cheap and great to learn on (well for target shooting anyway, i don't buy that self defence crap)

What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

On my 21st birthday i am gonna pick up this lil beauty:

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.

Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.

EDIT: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS ISNT A THREAD ABOUT GUN RIGHTS! IF YOU DONT WANT ONE THEN FINE! STOP JUDGING THOSE WHO WILL BUY ONE OR ALREADY OWN ONE. Take your opinions to the right place, they will be appreciated and this is not the right thread to start a gun ownership debate.
Not telling you what to do or anything, but when the 5.7 round hits sommething.... It really doesnt like to stop, so you shoot the dude, it goes through the bullet proof vest hes wearing (?) goes through a wall, and kills you kid dog or what ever.

I would and did opt for a 357. revolver with frangible ammunition, would definatley fuck you up and and will not overly penetrate. And the rounds are about 75 cents each but that really doesnt matter, you only need 10 or so rounds right?

*INTERNET HIGH FIVE!*

my first real rifle was a mosin nagant M31

it was a throw together from 3 different riffles and was rusting apart, but i could still hit a coyote from 300 (i think it measures in meters)meters, by just squinting and setting the elevation.
