Instantly interested? Who is making it. I find with all the games being released purely as product, knowing the pedigree of a production company and their love for their craft makes their next installment at least worthy of interest.

I will give any real time strategy game a chance, no matter how lame it looks.

Also anything with a level up system in it will hook me instantly.

Combine the two of these, and you're just not playing fair (Damn you Warcraft 3! I burned too much of my life on you).

Superpower variety. Prototype was awesome for this. If you are an OPed monster that can cross the whole game world in three minutes I'm in.

If it's a concept or a viewpoint I haven't considered, I'll usually check out the game.
Hmm... Metascore is something I check for sequels, even if I really want it I'll take more time exploring it before shelling out the cash if the metascore is very low.

Anything Battletech/Mechwarrior related or games like FO3 or the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series which are sorta post apocolyptica

Really, I find myself attracted most to games that antithesize the triple A games industry. That isn't to say I don't enjoy certain big-budget games, but I find myself more and more interested in games which don't necessarily involving shooting, killing, and fighting in any way. Probably my biggest attractor to a game is clever puzzles. Games which let me think, and give me a real sense of accomplishment from the completion of each task, due to the fact that I had to think. If the art style is unique, with decent art direction, if the soundtrack is nice an atmospheric and if the gameplay is a good reflection of the art direction, I'll be more inclined towards the game as well. I'm continuing to find that I pick up a shooter or a fighter or a third person action game, and get bored pretty quickly, and continuing to find that point-and-click adventures attract me more.

If we're talking about a weakness as in something that causes me to break down, within games, it's sandboxes. I can't deal with sandboxes. The reason is that I have a long list of games I have to get through, and it continually grows as new games come out. When I'm playing a game, if I'm not immediately invested in it, I find myself stressed about how much I still "have to play". The thing is that I get stressed out if I'm not doing everything available to me in a game, because I feel like I'm missing out on a lot, but I also get stressed out when I'm not progressing fast enough in a given game, so I end up just frustrated playing any kind of open world game. Most recently it happened with Assassin's Creed 2, before that it was Arcanum... I guess I just like linear games more?

Giant customizable robots that jet around the battlefield like a 200 ton steel-plated physics-defying ice skater, From Software being one of my favorite game developers in this viewpoint.

Armored Core and Chromehounds kicked ass, and I'd do anything to be able to own a copy of Metal Wolf Chaos. That is some crazy shit right there.

-If it has a solid single player campaign with a thought provoking or generally interesting storyline. (Bioshock/Alan Wake/Heavy Rain)
-If it has a massive open world where you can do what the hell you like in whatever way you like. (Oblivion/Fallout)
-If it's set in space (Halo/Mass Effect)

These three do it for me every time.

An emphases on humor.

I preordered Duke Nukem never playing it because it looked comically awesome. Bulletstorm, same thing. New franchise, yes by People Can fly, but I bought it new because it looked to have good humor, same with Saint's Row 2.

Also Sucker Punch, that team is GOD
I'm going to agree with this, but rephrase it a little bit, and say: "Game's that remember they're games." Also, I love games that break the 4th wall, and games with stories that aren't meant to be taken too seriously.

Duke 3D
Serious Sam
Bullet Storm
No More Heroes
God Hand
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard - Had potential, but the game play was mediocre

I forget what game it was, but I remember an RPG that when it was explaining how to do things, it would basically say: Imagine a "B button" and press that to run. I think it was Mother 3.

Also, Horror games that go beyond jump scares, though I'm not sure this qualifies, since I usually do watch trailers or game play of horror games before I buy them. Also games with a heavy atmosphere.

Amnesia
Penumbra: Overture and Dark Plague
Dead Space (The atmosphere is pretty good, but is killed by the constant enemies)
The first Condemned
Silent Hill 1 and 2 (haven't played the others)

Killing, I suppose. And sandbox mode.

I also love Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood with it's ability to order assassin recruits around. In my opinion, the weakest feature of Just Cause 2 is it's god awful friendly AI

dammit - i knew this thread would frustrate me - i see so many things i consider bad reasons and cringe, and actually get hot around the ears. my own fault.

i like a myriad of things - and usually nothing specific - short of customisation (gameplay wise, not visually), i just really enjoy finding loopholes that allow me to become ridiculously overpowered, even if only in certain scenarios.

i sugest that you guys try things that is outside your comfort zone, yet appealing - this most often means puzzle games, or indie games, but the feeling of pleasant surprise is one of the best.

If I see it is by Valve or has a familiar character in it (that I like) I'll likely get it.

I also like unique themes and ideas. And Co-op games are more fun than single or competitive.

(was anyone else hoping for this being a thread about what your weakness in games is? As in, what do you suck at most in games? That's what I was expecting).
Yeah I know it sounds toolish and fanboyish but I will buy ANYTHING by Valve. I mean if they put out something thats shit ill admit it, but ill play it till the end first.

Other things that get me,
Humor
A good story line
Inventive weapons/game mechanics
I played Painkiller simply because of the crazy weapons, same thing with bulletstorm. I bought and played the first Portal just because the mechanic was new. (and because it was made by valve lol)
But yeah if i havnt seen it before I'm interested.
and if its well written. funny, dramatic, deep, or dark, i don't care, as long as the writing is good I'll play it.
Oh and A good soundtrack. That doesn't hurt either

Excessive gore and human enemies. Deep inside my mind a little mad bloodthirsty sadist dwells perhaps... But, that is it. If a game lets you blow to pieces, eviscerate, decapitate humans.. I will buy it.
Not that it's the only thing I care about, but still.

Horror executed well in games makes me buy them and then not play them. I always try to buy horror games, but the ones that are genuinely scary just sit on the shelf. Why? Because I'm a massive pussy and can't manage to play through them :<

I know this isn't exactly what the tread is about but my weakness is buying games on steam when they're on sale even if i don't really want them. I have so many games witch i have hardly played and don't really like because it was 75% off and i couldn't resist

a Good opening
either a "Before *insert problem here* happened, the character was like/doing this (Ex: Half Life 2, Fallout 3)
or a thrilling and climatic opening (Ex: Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 1)

Games with a management element crucial to core gameplay that isn't stupidly complex or requires inhumanly speedy clicking makes me interested. See Deus Ex, STALKER, Tropico, etc.

Games that require a degree of stealth and tactical approach also have me hooked too. See Thief, ARMA2, STALKER and Deus Ex (yet again!), SWAT4, Crysis, Battlefield 2142, etc. That's why I tend to love stalking and escape missions.

I also have a thing for vehicle simulators. See IL-2 Sturmovik, Mechwarrior, etc.
