Never explore. Just dig. You'll find purpose in the dirt. Not out there. Among the creepers.

My Golden Rule though: Put torches everywhere. Do not leave a dark spot while exploring a cave, cause creepers will come, and creep up your shit. Scaring the pants off you in the process.
Bah, most of my rules have been mentioned so i won't bother to mention them, anyways i got couple more:
- Always have enough wood with you when going underground to make a workbench
- It's not cheating if you turn on the peaceful for little time to regenate your health back while carrying gold/diamonds/redstone.

Ascend as soon as you can.
Make sure your above the lava level before you chillean miner your way out.
Don't forget, spiders can climb walls.
always carry 2 buckets when going into cave, one filled with water, the other empty incase you run out of torches and need to improvise light from lava.

Reminds me of a funny story I had once. I had done a huge replcia of tetris early in a MP game, and after I finished it I went on to build a mansion. When I was done with that I came back to see what I expected, the tetris blocks were gone. However in my 35 seconds of absence griefers had gotten to my mansion and deleted it.
