Netherrack is awesome for beacons and nothing else.

Netherrack makes for some cool torches/lamps in a large house...as long as it's not made of wood.
OT:
1) Never dig the block directly under you.
2) Torches are your friend. Blanket the earth with them.
3) Yeah, creepers are annoying, but remember: spiders are faster...and they hide on your roof at night.

Lighthouses.

Always have markers to lead you back to your main camp, and always have an especially large one to point out your spawn point. Usually, I stack two cobblestone pieces on one another, then cover it with torches.

Looks pretty cool from a distance, actually. Reminiscent of the set of torches from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

My spawn lighthouse is made mainly of glass, with burning Netherrack on all corners every three blocks up. It has a doorway in the bottom, and a ladder (placed on a block of wooden log every other block upwards (I liked the contrast of vicious eternal fire co-existing with flammable material divided by cold glass)) going up to the highest point in the skybox, at which point there's an open roofed observatory, with the top rimmed by more fire. It sits on an elongated platform of grass, extending out from the tallest mountain adjacent to my hilltop penthouse.

It's my favourite creation by far, and definitely has to be seen to be appreciated, unfortunately, I'm not on the comp with my save files, so I can't upload an image.

i dig up all the time.

My rule is to always have loads of torches and enough pickaxes to dig from the bottom of the map to the top of the map incase i get lost underground. which happens alot.

Pretty sure the thread asked my golden rule of the game. My personal rule is not to play... so that was the most suiting response. I understand being annoyed when ppl post rude responses on a forum or be a dick to others... but as is, I just felt like sharing my golden rule.

Unless mining, sleep at night.

ALWAYS CARRY A COMPASS WHEN ENTERING THE NETHER!

Torches are your friend, use them.

Make your house safe, you will want to step out the door without getting blown up. A wall, a floating house, and a lit mountainpeak all work well.

Don't pussy out, play on hard or normal.

Make sure you can find the way out of your cave/mine. It's easy to get lost.

2) A hydroponics wing is a good addition to any castle

4) Don't keep everything in that one chest by the front door, put the valuable stuff in another chest in another room
5) a 2 year old should be less scared of the dark than you, more light

Not my rule, cause I dont play, but one of my friends does. he made this skull fortress thing and trusted me to play for ten minutes while he went to change some laundry. I mined out a small entrance and he never noticed. Creepers came in and blew it up.

It was glorious.

Multiplayer: Move far enough away from the spawn point so that your base cannot be seen even on far distance.

Having only played singleplayer I don't have very many... I'm afraid of angering people by playing multplayer...
