I won't bind myself to any particular rule, mainly because I will find better ways to do something in Minecraft all the time.

But I almost always carry a sword on me.

Add overhangs to your walls; they keep the spiders from climbing up.

Always carry a full stack of wood.

Diamonds: better off for tool-making. Too rare to waste on armor and decoration.

1: Caves are not threatening. Caves are homes that don't have that last wall built in yet.

2: Diamonds are most likely to be found between layers 16 and 13. Digging any lower than that is needless endangerment.

3: Make your home base as self sufficient as possible. Need a few extra cobblestone blocks? Build a cobblestone generator. Tree farms are a must (especially now that charcoal is an option). Sugar cane/wheat farms optional but recommended. A mob spawner+trap is by no means necessary and a lot of work, but it WILL make your life easier in the end.

4: Need arrows? Hunt a skeleton. Flint and sticks can be used for better things, like flint+steel and tool handles.

5: The only tool that demands to be regularly upgraded is the pick axe. Ergo, the pick axe always takes priority when tool making materials are found.

6: Torches are your best friend in the whole wide goddamn world. You never, ever have enough torches.

7: Diamonds are wonderful, but not necessary. If mining that diamond is likely to get you killed, mind its location and come back for it later while better prepared.

8: When exploring caves, carry a bucket of water with you at all times. It may very well save your life more often than your sword will. Also provides a way back up a sudden drop if one feels the need to explore a sudden drop.

9: Any block will do in a pinch.

10: The world is theoretically infinite. Your time is not. Suck it up and use steel/diamond tools if available.

Don't depend on a bucket of water to save your house from fire. You will just make a mess on the soon to be cleared lot that was once your home.

Do not build your house out of TNT and then coat it with gold blocks. If you do, do not attempt to add a window.

Always expect the Spanish Inquisition!

And by Spanish Inquisition, I mean green, explode-y fuckers.

Always. Have. Torches.

That's pretty much it.

Oh, and FEAR EVERYTHING. That bit of tree? Really a creeper in disguise.

OT: Never think "There could be diamond in the next block"
Because it wrecks havoc on ones mind.
BUT IT ALWAYS MIGHT BE THERE. And then, when it isn't, IT MIGHT JUST BE ONE MORE BLOCK AWAY.

And, unless I dig every block out, I'll never, ever know how many stacks of diamond were just that one block away...

My golden rules don't apply to what's happening now. I'm on single player, and in the very deep cave i'm in, I keep hearing what sounds like someone using a pickaxe.... I'm too scared to unpause.

I played at my friend's, and I learned...
1. Coal is more valuable than diamond.
2. Never dig straight down.
3. You don't really need that fireplace.

If a creeper chases you on the surface run towards water. Creepers explosion rendered null and void in water.

If underground and you hear "sssssSSSsss"... Give up.
