But there are plenty natural-occuring effects that can and do hamper your ability to make logical decisions. Aforementioned states - like when you're panicked or otherwise threatened most certainly affect decision making progress. That's why military and police go through elaborate training with a lot of discipline involved - without it, you rely on instincts alone and instincts and logical thinking don't really go hand in hand.

Strong emotions, too. Predetermined and unprovable beliefs. Simple ignorance of surrounding environment. Basic cranial trauma. Sufficiently annoying irritation of any kind. You don't need any help from drugs to hamper your logical thought process, trust me. Some types of stimulants might even help it.
I try and practice as much self discipline as I can, and while I'll admit that you can't always be in complete control, I like to minimize those opportunities. That is what I am trying to do, because I believe that logical decision making is far better than emotional ones. I haven't made an important emotional decision in quite some time.

And still, there's the sanity part. Where do you base your "sanity"? Considering your first rule, which is "live for yourself", or something, I already removed the post from the quote, it's pretty clear that you do not think everything should be devoted to the society.

But what we consider sanity generally doesn't go much further then following the societal expectations and norms, however idiotic from certain points of view they might be. A man who claims to see ghosts and believes that there is a conspiracy of musketeers out to get him is labeled as schizophrenic and "insane" because his actions and beliefs don't fit into the societal norms, and because he has no proof for, well, what he claims. A man who believes in an equally unprovable god (And no, everyone who's reading it, don't try to turn this into a religion thread unless you have objective proof) is accepted because similar beliefs have been a norm in said man's society for generations.

This isn't the best example, actually. A much better way would be to look at various social values.
My sanity is basically just me thinking logically about the situations occurring in my life. Societal values mean very little to me, and my own morals are what I base my actions off of.

As far as living for myself goes, I feel that I am the only one in life that I can depend on. I need to think of myself first, because no one else if going to do it.

got bored the other day and decided to make my own code of humanity a little like the ten commandments only different they are as follows
1.Do not kill
2.Do not steal
3.Do not bear false witness
4.Do not force your beliefs on others
5.Don't be a jackass
6.Don't break the law
7.Attempted to see all men and women as equals no matter what
8.Avoid being baisd
9.Do not place a judgement without first conferming evidence

so I ask you what are yours
note: they can be whatever and however many you want
Doesn't that technically (logically) mean that since you aren't allowed to force your beliefs on others...when those people do the other things on your list (like being a jackass) out of some belief that you would have to remain silent?

IMHO, in the end it all comes down to the golden rule: "Do not do unto others what you would not want them do unto you."

Except in the case of the law. The law deals with many matters...not just (although primarily) relations between human beings.

1) Respect for all life on the earth, though when push comes to shove, humans come first
2) Everything in moderation
3) Protect all human life; this goes into rule 1
4) Respect the beliefs and opinions of others, even if you disagree
5) Obey the law; if the law is unjust, work within the system to change it
6) Do not lie, cheat or steal
7) Learn from the past to improve the future
8) Sometimes things are worth fighting for, but such times are rare; know the difference
9) Have the courage to live a good life even when such a life is unpopular or against the cultural grain
