Yahtzee, really...I am VERY disappointed in you. The Other M characterization dead horse has been stripped of it's skin by now.

In fact, I'm calling a new rule. Anyone who talks about Other M's characterizations in ANY light are now required to watch this video [http://www.screwattack.com/shows/partners/game-overthinker/game-overthinker-episode-40-heavens-metroid] before commenting further.
Umm No I love Game Over Thinker defend him when others bash on him but this one was just patently wrong. Samus has a characterization. The people who usually talk about the character of Samus and how this goes against her personality are going by the actual personality from the comics and such.

The closing comparison to a cheese puff reminded me of the show "A bit of Fry and Laurie" and once i explored this idea more, a lot of questions have come to mind.. Have u ever seen the show Yahtzee? and do you recognize a similarity between your "rants" and some of their monologues? and more general personal ponderings...

In some ways the funniest thing about Lollipop Chainsaw seems to be that it's a game about a nubile teenage girl in a fetishistic cheerleader outfit dismembering zombies with a rainbow-colored chainsaw that no one can get that excited about.

Not too impressed that Yahtzee of all people also wants to step onto the soapbox with Jim Sterling for a moment to direct some judgement over women's issues.

Stick to the whore jokes, Yahtzee. The blogosphere is plenty active in raising gender politics.

I've been kind of torn on this game, and Yahtzee kinda highlights my fears. Even if you dial it back for hyperbole and jokes, this sounds like it's boring in terms of combat.

Also, I did take the game as satirical and self-aware, but yes. People will still take it as fetishistic. But at least this comes off as self aware.

That's not hipster. :p

Plus, it really is a problem, I agree. Offbeat only really works as a thing when it's offbeat. If it becomes perfunctory, what is the point of it?

This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Lollipop Chainsaw.

Watch Video
I was hoping Yahtzee would have something positive to say about the music for this game which was put to together by one of my personal favorite artists Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence and Akira Yamaoka who made the sweet ear-love to me that was the Silent Hill Soundtrack.

Anyone who posts that terrible video needs to watch this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX4mhp-8sOc&feature=plcp

I have seen bob's video, and it is AWFUL (both in characterization and the video) I love how he forgets something he previously stated, that gameplay and cutscenes work together to tell the story, and just makes up a bunch of strawmen and their arguments that don't exist so that he has someone to argue against.

Edit: Stupid ninjas.

Edit 2: Here's another better video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfS0254dRRw&feature=plcp

Never mind the fact that out of this utterly stupid game about a 18 year old cheerleader killing zombies there was a genuinely moving moment where Juliet's father suicidally rides a motorcycle loaded with dynamite into the mouth of a 500ft tall zombie Elvis.
Oh my stars. Well, thanks to you, good sir, I now have to at very least give this game a rent. Can't really afford much with only about $15 of spending money on me right now but methinks this will be worth it.

Incidentally, seeing as how Tara Strong (the chick who voices Twilight Sparkle) did the voice for our intrepid heroine methinks it would be awesome if they released a Twilight Sparkle cosplay DLC costume. Who else agrees?

Just what the hell is "fucked" about wanting to protect Lara in the new Tomb Raider?

I'm sorry Croshaw, but you really jumped the shark with your contrarian bullshit on that one.
The fact you're taking one of the strongest females in gaming and being told by the director that you should "Protect her and nurture her" like she's a Barbie doll or something. It's unneeded, and bloody stupid to boot.
That wasn't said by the director, and that wasn't even what was meant. The idea is that you'll REALLY want to see Lara succeed, that they want to make you feel as thought if you were there, you'd want to do everything in your power to protect her. It's called building empathy for a character.
The difference is, a game doing this to Nathan Drake as a young teenager would not even get close to being approved. Because males in gaming aren't allowed to be "weak". Same exact genre, practically the same gameplay (Uncharted took more than a few pieces from Tomb Raider), yet one character has to be made "weak" to advance a story.
Lester the Unlikely had a weak male protagonist! He literally ignores your commands and runs from things he's scared of, in fact. As you progress through the game, he becomes braver and less whiny. It's a pretty progressive game imo!

OT: Yeah, "trying too hard" is exactly what I thought when I first saw the media buildup for Lollipop Chainsaw. I've never been a fan of actually playing Suda51 games, so it hardly matters to me, but I always loved his concepts and some of the ones in here are still pretty solid (the literal objectification of the "male lead" that someone mentioned earlier, the surprising progressive traits of the female lead, the satire of western gaming he's been doing since No More Heroes, etc.)

Erm, Yahtzee's made points about this before. See his Shadows Of The Damned, Catherine, and Other M reviews.

Yes, of course. Spot on. I don't even know what you're talking about.

While "video games are sexist" makes no sense as a universal claim, the industry clearly has issues with sexism and, to a lesser extent, racism. If you can't (or more likely won't) see that, you're the one that has some growing up to do.
I think it's immature to equate something so trivial as a video game with real discrimination. Gamers are like any other group of people, but it's also immature to make a blanket statement and say that everyone who utters something sexist is automatically a sexist person when it's far more likely that they're just idiots reaching for vile crap to spew.

Hearing you taking the piss out of Other M makes my day. Shame, from what I saw of LC it looked fun, but just another average game in the collection. Hoping something good will turn up soon.

Also, have they made a game with zombie communists yet?

What Bob completely fails to understand in that video is that the character would be awful even if it wasn't Samus. The fact that it is is just insult to injury, and it's a DAMN big insult.

Out of interest - have you played Other M?
I have, actually...and it's actually a pretty good game from a gameplay perspective. From where I stand, it seems it only got a bad rap because of the story.

No, I'd say that Other M deserves every ounce of venom it receives.

I'm not equating anything. There are many different forms of discrimination. Not all of them are equivalent, but they're all quite real, I can assure you.

Gamers are like any other group of people, but it's also immature to make a blanket statement and say that everyone who utters something sexist is automatically a sexist person when it's far more likely that they're just idiots reaching for vile crap to spew.
I don't think you quite understand what the word "immature" means. Besides, why should the two situations you've described be in any way mutually exclusive? Most people who spew misogynistic slurs are both misogynists and idiots looking to say the most hateful, ugly thing they can think of. The same goes for racist and homophobic slurs.

I've replayed it many times (have like 95% of trophies) and still want to replay it. If Afterburner Climax was a slasher, it'd be like this...
Really, it all depends on how much you are into score, leaderboards and slashers. Although initially it's really wonky, until you upgrade your combos.

Edit: you're doing the zombie baseball game wrong. 90% of time I complete it without Nick taking a single hit. It's not intuitive though, it's easy to start doing wrong stuff and screw up.
Tip: 1. Never leave ammo spawn, stand there and never leave firing mode (L2).
2. Reload often (square button Yahtzee! explains a lot really... Reload the fudjing Chainsaw Blaster manually with square button while aiming!) and pay attention to zombie spawn pattern which is 100% fixed and predictable.
