Umm No I love Game Over Thinker defend him when others bash on him but this one was just patently wrong. Samus has a characterization. The people who usually talk about the character of Samus and how this goes against her personality are going by the actual personality from the comics and such.GamemasterAnthony said:Yahtzee, really...I am VERY disappointed in you. In fact, I'm calling a new rule. Anyone who talks about Other M's characterizations in ANY light are now required to watch this video [http://www.screwattack.com/shows/partners/game-overthinker/game-overthinker-episode-40-heavens-metroid] before commenting further.

I was hoping Yahtzee would have something positive to say about the music for this game which was put to together by one of my personal favorite artists Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence and Akira Yamaoka who made the sweet ear-love to me that was the Silent Hill Soundtrack.Yahtzee Croshaw said:Lollipop Chainsaw

Oh my stars. Well, thanks to you, good sir, I now have to at very least give this game a rent. Can't really afford much with only about $15 of spending money on me right now but methinks this will be worth it.Kermi said:Never mind the fact that out of this utterly stupid game about a 18 year old cheerleader killing zombies there was a genuinely moving moment where Juliet's father suicidally rides a motorcycle loaded with dynamite into the mouth of a 500ft tall zombie Elvis.
Lester the Unlikely had a weak male protagonist! He literally ignores your commands and runs from things he's scared of, in fact. As you progress through the game, he becomes braver and less whiny. It's a pretty progressive game imo!NameIsRobertPaulson said:The difference is, a game doing this to Nathan Drake as a young teenager would not even get close to being approved. Because males in gaming aren't allowed to be "weak". Same exact genre, practically the same gameplay (Uncharted took more than a few pieces from Tomb Raider), yet one character has to be made "weak" to advance a story.Michael Ellis said:That wasn't said by the director, and that wasn't even what was meant. The idea is that you'll REALLY want to see Lara succeed, that they want to make you feel as thought if you were there, you'd want to do everything in your power to protect her. It's called building empathy for a character.NameIsRobertPaulson said:The fact you're taking one of the strongest females in gaming and being told by the director that you should "Protect her and nurture her" like she's a Barbie doll or something. It's unneeded, and bloody stupid to boot.Michael Ellis said:Just what the hell is "fucked" about wanting to protect Lara in the new Tomb Raider?
I'm sorry Croshaw, but you really jumped the shark with your contrarian bullshit on that one.
Erm, Yahtzee's made points about this before. See his Shadows Of The Damned, Catherine, and Other M reviews.Khanht Cope said:Not too impressed that Yahtzee of all people also wants to step onto the soapbox with Jim Sterling for a moment to direct some judgement over women's issues.
Stick to the whore jokes, Yahtzee. The blogosphere is plenty active in raising gender politics.
Yes, of course. Spot on. I don't even know what you're talking about.Jerkules said:Mean old PC brigade ruining your day?
I think it's immature to equate something so trivial as a video game with real discrimination. Gamers are like any other group of people, but it's also immature to make a blanket statement and say that everyone who utters something sexist is automatically a sexist person when it's far more likely that they're just idiots reaching for vile crap to spew.Jerkules said:While "video games are sexist" makes no sense as a universal claim, the industry clearly has issues with sexism and, to a lesser extent, racism. If you can't (or more likely won't) see that, you're the one that has some growing up to do.

Incidentally, seeing as how Tara Strong (the chick who voices Twilight Sparkle) did the voice for our intrepid heroine methinks it would be awesome if they released a Twilight Sparkle cosplay DLC costume. Who else agrees?
I have, actually...and it's actually a pretty good game from a gameplay perspective. From where I stand, it seems it only got a bad rap because of the story.SirBryghtside said:Great as always, the last line had me in stitches XD Totally agree with you on the sexism issue, you put it better than I ever could. What Bob completely fails to understand in that video is that the character would be awful even if it wasn't Samus. The fact that it is is just insult to injury, and it's a DAMN big insult.GamemasterAnthony said:Yahtzee, really...I am VERY disappointed in you. No, I'd say that Other M deserves every ounce of venom it receives.GamemasterAnthony said:Yahtzee, really...I am VERY disappointed in you. The Other M characterization dead horse has been stripped of it's skin by now.

I'm not equating anything. There are many different forms of discrimination. Not all of them are equivalent, but they're all quite real, I can assure you.Chatney said:I think it's immature to equate something so trivial as a video game with real discrimination.
I don't think you quite understand what the word "immature" means. Besides, why should the two situations you've described be in any way mutually exclusive? Most people who spew misogynistic slurs are both misogynists and idiots looking to say the most hateful, ugly thing they can think of. The same goes for racist and homophobic slurs.Gamers are like any other group of people, but it's also immature to make a blanket statement and say that everyone who utters something sexist is automatically a sexist person when it's far more likely that they're just idiots reaching for vile crap to spew.
