Is that the whole plot of every Mario game? Cake? I never noticed that, I always thought it was just some random party...

This makes me look at the Mario series in a whole new way...

Mmm cake.

And yeah, this is why I don't really play Mario. There needs to be some fucking story. Yeah it's a game for casuals and children, but they could at least make an effort using the current characters. But they don't even bother.

This all leads me perform a giant /facepalm when sites give it a 10/10.

Great episode BUT....
What is it with all this dumping on the Simpsons lately? Not just Yahtzee but I've seen elsewhere on the internet as well; Simpsons is stagnating. It hasn't been good since the fifth season? they had barely established the character voices by then! It is hard for me to actually watch the old seasons because the animation is so crap and the sound quality is so terrible compared to what it is now. It's miles ahead of the competition: Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland Show. If you want to talk about degrading in quality, how about the last season of "That 70's Show"

Sorry but I had to get that out of the way. That's some good advice at the end: Go out and do something you've never done before. That applies to everyone, not just Mario fans.

Very good, very funny, very true.

Also, Suddenly I'm being given actual life advice by Yahtzee, and it's good life advice. What happened? Did he get mobbed by one fanboy too many and realise he had to do something to make them less socially retarded? Maybe every Zero Punctuation will include a little fortune cookie badge now if you complete the activity (God I hope not.)

Anyway, I'm going out tonight to play the guitar and hopefully sex up a girl who keeps coming along to hear me play said guitar on a big stage, that good enough for you? I would go out at the weekend but I've been working twelve hour days for the last month and half and I won't stop until at least the end of August. (Seriously, this is like the first week I've been home before ten since June.)

TheNamlessGuy said:

The word 'sex' can not only be used as a way of expressing biological genre, but also as a term to refer to the actual sex organ, usually of a woman in a literary sense (read some Victorian porn, they describe it as a woman's 'sex' every time). Nowadays it's just bad fanfic writers who use the expression but it's perfectly valid, if a little archaic.

Given that Yahtzee is a gigantic literary snob and probably meant it this way I may well have just spoiled what I think was a fantastic literary snob joke.

Funny as always. But on what you said about Nintendo seeing players as retards - It's a casual game, made for ''the family'' so it has to be accessible to everyone. And it's a Mario game. You shouldn't expect much of a story.

Good, and loved the slap part. But he did seem that he was complaining when he was talking about the gameplay? If it ain't broke, don't fix it, or something along those lines. True that they do need to add something, and what that something is interests me.

Calumon: I wouldn't mind some cake.

NO NOT "CAKE" JUST NORMAL CAKE.

I'm amazed at the amount of other people seeming to actually hang around this site hitting the refresh button until Yahtzee's new video comes up... Anyways, I think the most ridiculous part of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is where they copy the intro wholesale from the original, and expect us to not realize because it's in 2-D.

Eh, not his funniest video but pretty good. It seems like he had some problems finding stuff to gripe aboud and ended up meandering a bit.

I, personally, loved Mario Galaxy 2 and it ranks among the best platformers that I've ever played and I've been playing since 1983. I don't know if he really didn't like it or not but I wish he wasn't stuck doing hate filled reviews all the time. I'm sure Yahtzee can do more that's funny than just spew bile. That being said maybe he really didn't like it but I'd reccommend it to anyone who has access to a Wii . . . I said "Wii."

EDIT1: Typo

EDIT2: Interestingly this Mario game does have some continuity if you play to the end. I'm not saying it has more continuity than another Mario title but I don't even remember another title having as much as is in the final scene.

You know what? I need to give Mario another chance. All I've played are his old games that people hail as the "best games ever".

Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario 64...Both of which have aged VERY poorly.

Guess I'll start with this. Or Sunshine. Or Galaxy 1.

It boggles the mind why you would want to review Super Mario Galaxy 2 if you knew it would be exactly the same as the original (and I'm sure you did), but it was an otherwise good review. It would be swell, however, if a review of Half Life managed to appear. Just sayin'.

Nintendo do keep milking the same franchises, but damn them for somehow keeping the same series fun all this time. Still hoping for some new characters eventually.

Great, I'm going to be using sentences which involve cake as innuendos for sex. Nice review but I guess I can't really comment too much. I don't own Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 so I can't give you my opinion on it. What I can do is laugh at your humour and then go back to playing God of War 2 with broken joypad which makes it difficult for me to turn right.

I was personally shocked to find out this game was a reboot rather than a real sequel, to be honest that would normally bother me quite a bit, but Mario manages to save himself with gameplay, as usual. Though I gotta say their big floating Patrick Star is much less pleasing to the eyes than Rosalina was.

I think the best part about the plot in SMG2, and indeed the plot in NSMBWii (because they are the same) was that the game took almost zero time to establish the setting, characters, or motivations. You are plopped straight into the world and HOLY CARP everything goes to hell almost instantly. Nintendo at least gets brevity points for that.

Well while this game didn't improve the franchise, presumably it was released so that Nintendo's cocaine bucket could be refilled, and in that regard, the game has succeeded.

Well, didn't Yahtzee say the exact same thing in pretty much every Mario review? I guess his videos can be as predictable as the plot lines for the games he's reviewing. And nice to see that at least he realizes it.

I will admit that this video was the creepiest of all the Zero Punctuations... I had flashbacks of tubgirl from that image near the beginning.

That show is funny but never foward-thinking. Besides, everyone knows Family Guy is better because it's edgier, in the same way that games with piles of depth sometimes end up being more fun than Mario Bros 11(although not all the time as the case may be).

Analogies make the world go round.

Well, this is more or less what I expected. The reason that everyone loved the game and gave it high scores was because it is essentially the first game but better level design, more variety, etc. I guess its a matter of what your standards are for what is and isn't enough to consider a sequel. So with all due respect Mr. Croshaw, I disagree.

Right because everybody plays video games for the story.

To quote Yahtzee himself:

"You want a story? Here's your story ? 'Demons over there, KILL THEY ASS.'" -- Ninja Gaiden 2 review.

In the Super Mario series, Plot is just an excuse for Miyamoto and his design crew to come up with new, challenging, and occasionally sadistic obstacle courses and races in strange-looking worlds. Galaxy 2 is probably the clearest example of that, seeing as they deliberately cut back on the story after Galaxy 1.

The review was funny as hell, but the 'cake' references have made me think about the W.I in new and utterly disturbing ways. Perhaps the W.I was started as more of a first world war era swingers club or something....

I should explain to non-Brits, the W.I is a British organisation that's been around for donkey's years. W.I stands for Women's Institute, a group of elderly middle class women who spend their time baking 'cakes', holding 'cake' fairs, swapping 'cake' recipes, and other things that all involve 'cake'.

As regular viewers are aware, Yahtzee despises the concept of sequels so it's more than likely that if given control of the IP he would murder it and liberally apply fire and salt afterward.

I'm actually disappointed. I was hoping he'd review Singularity this week.

Okay, I was expecting Yahtzee to spend the entire first half of the review attacking the franchise rather than the actual game, and I was right.

But what I didn't expect was that he would actually acknowledge that he was doing so, which is very refreshing. And I REALLY didn't expect that bit at the end. That was... actually pretty damn good.

I've always thought of Mario as a homunculus.
And as for space... Well...
Space is probably one of the best metaphors for the human psyche.
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are just a thought experiment in which the mind does what is quite natural for it, what it has done before.

First I was bedazzled that the Pizza box in the video looks the same than those of my local Pizzeria in Germany. Then I thought, "hey, what if Yahtzee just googled "pizza box" and took the first picture. Low and behold, I was right, but even the I noticed it to be a Pizza box from the U.S.

Now I am scared there being an Italian conspiracy for Pizza boxes in all the world being the same. Or an Italian conspiracy for all plumber games being the same.

Because being a video game, it has to have more than an awesome plot. It also has to be fun to play. Videogames ultimately don't really need a plot. A game can have all gameplay but no plot, but if it's all plot and no gameplay, it ceases to be a game.

A little bare, but honestly, a true "review" of this game would be 95% cut-and-paste of any review of Galaxy 1. This game really goes by the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" methodology of development, and it is rather odd that it is nearly identical to SMG1 yet doesn't acknowledge it AT ALL. Let's not forget that the ORIGINAL title of SMG2 was SMG 1.5..

Upon playing the game from a local Best Buy I noticed you can get letters and bank your star bits. The first letter I read was one that got sent by Peach saying she got kidnapped and leaving a 1-Up shroom for me or something in the letter. I was like how the hell could Peach send a letter to Mario on his Faceship?! The mail toad said something about her being so thoughtful and I was in full facepalm mode by then before putting the controller down.

The first one I have found funny in quite a while, very nicely done.

I am also somewhat surprised that you are also one of those people who need to collect everything in an area in order to have it looking tidy.

Funny as always. But on what you said about Nintendo seeing players as retards - It's a casual game, made for ''the family'' so it has to be accessible to everyone. And it's a Mario game. You shouldn't expect much of a story.
I think the idea is that just because they've made a habit of it doesn't make it okay. Not surprising, yes, but not okay. Their retreading probably shouldn't be defended just because they do a lot of it.

Looks like Yahtzee needs better source material than, "this is the same game I played before, plus one." Not that he wasn't up to the challenge of producing a whole lot of content over nothing, but the quality suffered nonetheless.

Nintendo whores its IPs. The innuendo behind [http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=247] Princess Peach's, "cake." We've heard these ones before, you know?

Time for another retro review of something different. I nominate Odin's Sphere. It's got just enough right and wrong with it to be fertile ground.

What is it with all this dumping on the Simpsons lately? Not just Yahtzee but I've seen elsewhere on the internet as well; Simpsons is stagnating. It hasn't been good since the fifth season? they had barely established the character voices by then!
Because that's what people enjoy - learning characters and concepts. As soon as you have done, everything else becomes predictable.

OT I'll be sticking to Mario Sunshine. That is one of my favourite games ever, but like Yahtzee, I don't feel the need to play expansion packs set in boring space.

You can say this about most mario games but super mario galaxy 2 is so fun I don't think it matters that it brings nothing new to the table. Though that DVD is effin stupid.

Funny review as always. Instead of just giving a muffled giggle I actually laughed out loud while watching this one. Not a big Mario person, though. I guess the classics are good because they're classics, but like he said: I don't want to play a new installment of the same game every year.

Why do I torture myself by watching ZP reviews of games I actually like, especially Wii games? Watching his review of Brawl was like sticking a lit cigarette in my eye. I really hope he skips Other M when it comes out and goes back to wailing on games I'm indifferent to.

I wish I could remember the ZP episode where Yahtzee said he misses the Pacman method of story-telling--Eat pellets, avoid ghosts.

Well, with every Mario game, you get that exact same method--Get stars, beat up some giant dinosaur/turtle thing.

Can we try to be a bit more consistent, Yahtzee?

It's a Mario game. It's pretty obvious what to expect.

I'd still play it, though. It's good to jump into the time machine and head back to 1992 every now and then.

However, I have to say something to people who take Yahtzee's reviews as the main deciding factor in your purchases: How stupid are you? Yes, Yahtzee's a critic/QA man/reviewer/whatever he wants to call himself in a review on a given week, and yes, the reviews are as informative about what the game will entail as they are funny. However, his taste in games and (I assume) yours may not be one in the same. True, games like Psychonauts and Saints Row 2 are awesome, but maybe there are games Yahtzee's reviewed that you may like and he was more or less (hard to tell, sometimes) negavite toward. Example, Yahtzee seemed pretty negative toward Brewtahl Brutal Legend, but I loved it. By contrast, he seemed to enjoy Painkiller, while I found it sort of underwhelming. Point is, there are things that people agree on and things people don't. Even if Yahtzee says something's good or bad, that doesn't nessecarily mean that it will be to you. This is why I take reviews with a grain of salt, using it more or less as a jumping-off point of what to expect and not subject to the game's quality or my possible liking of it instead of taking the whole review and interpreting it as, "Yahtzee's words are the only truth, ergo it will be the sole deciding factor in a game purchase." Don't take the review at face value and completely ignore a game just because one person doesn't like it. I get it, though, you don't want to blow money on a bad game. That's why video stores and Gamefly exist. How do you know if Silent Hill 2 was the epitome of atmosphere in a game? Maybe Super Mario Galaxy 2 wasn't a glorified expansion pack. Try it for yourself and find out.

One of the best I've seen yet, as for who is who (id, ego, superego) the question is actually a bit difficult.

Obviously Bowser is the id.
Mario seems to be the ego (he's always yelled at by everyone "go save her you dumb shit!")
but that leaves Peach as the.....superego?

That doesn't make sense to me, she's not performing any selfless deeds guided by her internal "moral compass" she's just screaming her head off "save me, *****!"

I think Bowser is the id.
Mario is the ego.
and Peach is some dumb ***** who is sick of being kidnapped.

What? Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't add anything?! How surprising! (obvious sarcasm).
Also I'm a bit of a Simpson's fanboy, I personally think that it's one of the best cartoons ever created, but I'm also a Yahtzee fanboy and what he said about the simpsons made me think about something. Yahtzee has made around 150 episodes now, 153 if you count the ones he did on youtube. The number of episodes the Simpson's pumped out before they started to suck (according to Yahtzee) is 103. I'm not saying that the Simpsons are some sort of default measurement stick for comedy shows but if it is impossible to keep something good going for entertainment for more than 103 episodes, Yahtzee is playing on borrowed time.
Of course I don't agree, and I think that even though the Simpson's has lost a bit of subtelty it still an excellent show. And I still think ZP is funny... I think my point is that it might be true that some things get less fun the more of it you see, but the Simpson's might be an exception. And ZP is and exception too. I know a lot of you don't agree, but that is just my thoughts on the subject.
It was still a pretty good/funny review over all. it just made me very hungry for cake. (and not the metaphorical kind..; )

The slapping bit was a nice touch. As well as the Bowie references.

Also, I learned something new. You over in Britain use the term "Overtake" instead of "Passing?" I'm guessing that since Yahtzee is British born his terms probably come from there and not the Outback, but I could be wrong.

Funnily enough, I was drinking wine while watching this...
Also i love the text adventure (Am I the only who read it? No I ca';t be arsed to look at old comments yet).

And yes.

As a longstanding Nintendo fan I am BORED BORED BORED of having Metroid and mario shoved down my throat every six months. Oh god if nintendo could find it within themselves to do something interesting and different.

NO. Guitar hero is not interesting and different. Wii sports is not interesting and different. Mario party ...16? Is not interesting and different. Some stupid lame attempt at a donkey kong themed music game is not interesting and different. As well as they make these games, as fun as they are, I'm getting so fucking bored.

I would hope against hope that nintendo do something original again. But I doubt that will happen.

Now that was a review where I was not surprised. I called Yahtzee would label Mario Galaxy 2 as an stagnation of the franchise, but what surprised me is that he ended up admitting it was fun. So I will follow his request/advice. I am going out to the beach this weekend. I haven't done that in years.

Although I can agree to the assertion that SMG 2 definitely had the feel of "bring in the new people" from the packaging, I must say that most casual players will not be getting the first 120 stars. Some of those levels are incredibly frustrating, though nothing beats the first "Luigi on Mario" level from SMG 1 for sheer frustration.

Hmmmm "cake".

Anyway, I personally enjoyed Mario Galaxy 2, but I have to agree with Yahtzee that it did seem rather odd that no one in the game seemed react to the fact that Bowser seemed to be pulling the exact same stunt he pulled in the first Mario Galaxy. It makes me wonder, as in the first Mario Galaxy, why Bowser even kidnapped Peach this time. If he was out to create some big galactic empire, there would be nothing to gain from kidnapping a princess from one small insignificant planet. The only explanation I can think of is because he wants Mario to try and stop him. In both Mario Galaxy games, Mario wouldn't have even been aware of Bowser's plans for galactic conquest if he hadn't bothered to stop by and pick up Peach, but because he did Mario was like "Uh oh, looks like I gotta rescue the princess. ...again." So yeah, I'm guessing it's all part of the old hero/villain rivalry thing.
Anyway, I did enjoy the game even if some of the comet challenges are console stompingly frustrating. And I HATE that chimp.

I think it was around the time I started playing Mario and Luigi Partners in Time when I realized that this is all some sort of sick and twisted game for Mario, Bowser, and Peach. I mean they've been playing this same exact game since they were babies. I'm pretty sure all three of them are in on it and it's just some way for them to avoid doing actual work. Bowser puts on a facade of being big and evil, finds some way to terrorize Mushroom Kingdom and then just waits it out. Mario pretends to be the hero when really he just wants to cause some chaos, and Peach just wants to do nothing all day.

EDIT- Oh and also, the best part of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is at the start when Bowser becomes giant and suddenly he can fly. Being Giant = Flight in the Mario Universe, remember that kiddies.

really? Complaining about the plot in a Mario game, where the story is the least important aspect of the experience? Complaining about a slight flick of the wrist, as if the Wii were asking you for a full-on, arm waving pseudo workout? Complaining that a sequel has the same basic formula as its predecessor? This is new, exciting, and refreshing for Yahtzee!

PS. The cake joke was funny...as was the slapping

Wait, so if variety is the spice of [games], and repetition is the starch, then that means, as per a previous metaphor, it's not good to have an excessive amount of variety, as that's like eating spoonfuls of the spice straight from the jar.

So the best balance is clearly a little variety to spice up what would otherwise be repetitive additions to a franchise. Like the switching settings in the Mario games, or, in the case of NSMBW or Galaxy 2, new worlds and powerups.

So... this IS a good game? I am confused!

Must... not... try to defend game...

Argh what's the use. Fanboy mode engage.

Nintendo's Mario franchise, excluding the RPGs, have never been story intensive outside Mario rescues princess and/or Yoshis. I understand this irks people because of the nature of games as a storytelling medium. The thing is though this should not ruin a game wholesale, because even if the story's consistant at least it's good, or not bad at least. Keeping the story simple, Hero rescues Princess from Dragon in _________ setting with the help of __________, is fine by me so long as the controls are good, visuals charming, and experience gratifying. The Paper Mario and Mario RPG series have done a great job in the storytelling department, but I don't see that transitioning well to a Platforming Mario very easily without making a mistake or two, something I think they're playing safe with since this is their biggest IP.

Does this mean they shouldn't? No, because I would love to see a Mario Platformer written by "Intelligent Systems," the company behind Paper Mario.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm kind of in the mood for cake now.

Decent Point, though I was talking about the 3D Platformers as I'm sure you're aware. While I didn't like it as much as the first two, Super Paper Mario was a great game. It's more of a RPPGRole Playing Platform Game, it had more to the RPG element to it then standard Mario Platformers.

Time for awkward Portal jokes!

"...but there's no sense crying over every mistake:
you just keep on trying 'till you run out of... cake."

and

"...anyway, this... cake... is great,
it's so... delicious... and... moist?"

erm... forget that.

Nice video, very funny, but I'd be lying if I didn't stroke my own ego by saying I called this video. And it's not even because I'm clever like Yahtzee; I played Mario Galaxy, I played Mario Galaxy 2, and the first thing I noticed was "haven't I done this all before?".

Congratulations, Nintendo. Between the WiiBlank games, the New Super Mario Bros., and Mario Galaxy 2, you have found a way to make money from selling blatant copies that require less time to make then the original Super Mario Bros.

I used to admire you.

He sounded genuinely angry this time and he had every right to be, I played this game and found myself seriously getting upset with the retard friendly game play, I mean people tell me I shouldn't complain because even kids need to play games but COME ON PEOPLE!

I played Mario for the NES and Super Nintendo for hours on end as a child and I go back to them today and I can still say, they were challenging, well paced, and FUN.

I'm not lying when I say that at one point I got the cloud power up and laughed at the screen at how I didn't even need it, I proceeded to cartwheel jump and wall kick than spin move past chunks of the levels. This isn't skill, IT IS POOR LEVEL DESIGN. Dear lord I might have an stroke just thinking about it; at least than the game would be more along my skill level.

/end Yahtzee like rant.

Wait, so if variety is the spice of [games], and repetition is the starch, then that means, as per a previous metaphor, it's not good to have an excessive amount of variety, as that's like eating spoonfuls of the spice straight from the jar.
Didn't Yahtzee use this line (or a variation of it) in his Far Cry 2 review?
Actually it was the Little Big Planet review. He referred to usermade content as cinnamon; a light dusting of the stuff can make an already great game even better, but relying on it is like eating the stuff straight from the jar.

So when did the spice/starch thing, I decided to see what would happen when I mixed the metaphors.

I figured that cloud example was intentional. Y'know, for speed runners and the like.

In honesty, I do find SMG2 disappointing, but not because of a lack of challenge or gameplay issues. My first thought was that this just feels like an expansion pack (kinda funny seeing Yahtzee say the same thing), and I expect a little more innovation from Nintendo.

mmmmmm, "Cake" with the opposite sex. but wait! IDEA! Why not Skydive WHILE having "Cake" with the opposite sex? (or if you swing that way, have "Cake" with the same sex.) I mean, if astronauts can have cake while in space, why not skydivers?

It was all right. The only part that made me laugh was when he was smacking himself in the face. I wish we'd be able to see that...

Yahtzee's reviews make the world just a bit more bearable.
Thanks to him I get to know that the games I grew tired of fifteen years ago remained just as annoying and unimaginative today, which a valuable service for a jaded bugger like myself.

I nearly died laughing from watching all the "sniffff" sections whenever he referenced sex. Why going "sniffff" is funny when you think about it from a sexual standpoint, I'll never know.

That being said, is there anyone in the universe who thought "Galaxy 2" was a good idea? Frankly, I wasn't even sold on "Galaxy 1" when it came out. (Maybe I grew out of my Nintendo phase and didn't want to deal with another Mario game despite liking and playing Sunshine a lot.) I played a demo of this at Gamestop one day and kept making fun of how it's the exact same game as "Galaxy 1" and kept waiting for the star guys to say "It's happening again!" Granted, Bowser is about 50 times huger than he was in Galaxy 1 but that's it. (I'm not really liked by the Gamestop guys after that, but I got them off my back by pre-ordering Cataclysm.)

So really Nintendo, yes we're all excited about Zelda Skyward Sword and Goldeneye and Kid Icarus and Metriod other M... But this is bad. Really bad.

Ya know, after all this time, I wonder how hard it is to get a job working at Nintendo... It isn't exactly like you need to innovate or come up with anything. Hell, I think I could butcher ideas together in the writing department then pass the cocaine bucket without being greedy.

I knew he'd bring up the fact the game comes with about 3 different manuals on how to play the game which personally got right on my tits as well. Also the fact that sometimes main characters will say 'oh look, you died quite a few times that level, maybe you should get a friend to help you out' or 'how about take a break' pissed me right off. It felt extremely patronising.

If Nintendo decided to remove this game from the shelves tomorrow nobody would care.

Honestly if you think Nintendo never innovated then you have some facts to look up. I'll probably be deemed a fanboy for saying this but, who popularized analog control?

Just because they've been using the same franchises for a long time doesn't mean they aren't trying.

Couldn't have missed the point harder.

Yes the plot is stupid, but if that's what you're looking for you might want to check where you've been since 1996.

It's just fun, funner than any other game this year in my opinion, and I don't see any reason why the concept of repetition to get in the way of that.

It's sad that Nintendo in the 25 or so years mario has existed never thought to self satarise in this manor and made a left-feild more original platformer in which you are peach. I know nintendo make great software but yhatzee does have a point. It's the same software.

And i don't think advertising to buy the game is the best thing to do underneath a Yahtzee review. That's like having an Army sign-up booth at Woodstock

I was quite enjoying the Simpsons analogy right before he said FIFTH season. General fan consensus is that Simpsons started seriously declining after season 10, if not a bit before that. Saying the Simpsons stopped being good after season 5, when season 6 was one of the show's breakthrough seasons as far as humor goes, is treason as far as I'm concerned. Makes me wonder if that's just how long Yahtzee watched the show, or if he just pulled a number out of his ass.

Still, not really bothered by it, and a great and hilarious review nonetheless.

I bought both Galaxy games and I wholeheartedly agree with Yahtzee's criticisms of the game. I also agree with the 1 teensy bit of praise that he gave the game and it's why I feel like SMG 2 was a worthwhile purchase. Yahtzee said it was FUN to play, and honestly isn't that what playing games is about?
Also Yahtzee seems to have confused the numbers 5 and 8 in regards to The Simpsons, but is otherwise correct.

What I'm tripping on is why people look for something that isn't there.

Complaining that mario has no plot is like complaining that MW2 has no silly gibs. Its a serious-setting game so its for people who like realistic-type graphics. Mario is a platformer and the story was always the same, there isn't going to be abetrayal, character death, or other plot elements in a mario game any time soon.

I think people are forgetting that the game just good old fun like mario games always are, if you want a story driven game play Final Fantasy. Though I have to mention that most people here haven't really played a mario game after Super Mario world.

Mmmm, cake.

Anyway, I have not completed the first Super Mario Galaxy but I have strange, perhaps down right delusional confidence I will complete it someday, which in short means I should get around to completing Galaxy 2 when we get Yahtzee's previous idea of Super Mario Space-Time Continuum.

On a side note, yes the Simpsons should have finished long ago but not by season 5, I'd go up to 8 or 9.

You're new here, aren't you? As he said a while back, praising a game isn't funny.
First, nice screen name. Great book/movie. (Would like to see a film version of Choke)

Second, his review of Psychonauts was funny. (That is the review he and, I assume, you are referencing)

Third, a game can be praised in funny ways as well and there are legitimate things to criticize in any game so that covers both bases.

Fourth and finally, while you weren't overtly rude you could come of as a bit elitist and unwelcoming. If you really think someone is so new to the escapist as to not have a good idea of what goes on around here then you may want to be a little friendlier. Really though, you weren't over the top about it and I don't mean to be a jerk myself. I have no problem with you and don't preceive any problem you have with me. I just wanted to point out that without the aid of vocal inflection and such your comment could be interpreted as unfriendly.

Cheers and best to you.

At no point did he say SMG2 was a bad game, a telling point. He said it was the same game as SMG as well as having other things "homaged" wholesale from previous Mario titles. So, I did enjoy SMG, I probably won't play SMG2 if there's genuinely nothing new beyond a spaceship. Time to go and check out some less sharp reviews and see what they might have to say.

Apparently. He does like to accentuate negative points to make it seem like there aren't any positives.
The positives are starting to get really hard to spot. All I see is the same plot, same gameplay, same characters and it gets really boring really fast. With about 10 Mario games available for current generation systems and god knows how many before them (I lost count long ago) I'm starting to think that Nintendo is paying every reviewer and player into claiming that Mario is the best thing the industry has going for it right now. It's almost sad that Nintendo can get away with this shit for 27 years in a row.

And just like Yahtzee said, if you want to buy and play the same game every 1-2 years then by all means give away your money so it can be added to the official Nintendo money pile.

You know, I liked the game quite abit, but I'll agree with pretty much everything said. The only reason I even got it was because my mind was very blank the day of release and I didn't care for story. Of course, being me I got 120 stars in 48 hours. but that's sort of habit now.

And about the advice...That's a good idea, I think I'll try rock climbing =).

Yahtzee is really grasping at straws here, looking for a story in a Mario platformer and for new characters (let's all make Sonic's mistake, yay). Long story short, Galaxy 2 is the best, most refined platformer ever made. There are new toys to play with and small surprises every couple of minutes, the quality of the level design and the level of polish are stellar. Of course, polish only gets acknowledged by Yahtzee if your name is Valve and your game is called Team Fortress 2, being the huge fanboy that he is. I expected him to touch on issues that actually exist, like the lives system that NEEDS TO GO AWAY FOREVER, or the massive jump in difficulty that happens when you uncover the many different layers of the game (Prankster comets and beyond), but yeah, let's cry about the story and the fact that you can't play as a Toad. Sigh...

Wow.....I guess I'm the only one here that was disappointed by this review. It was incredibly predictable and spent the first half going on about things that anybody who didn't entirely disassemble the packaging upon receiving the game, didn't even notice. MG2 is fantastic, and if you buy a Mario game expecting to be driven around by some kind of epic story, then maybe you're the audience that needs to watch the dvd on how to play. Why would anyone in their right mind want Mario to be given a story? The game's not even supposed to make sense!! All a story would do is add restrictions to the amazingly creative level design which Yahtzee failed to mention, and make the player question every single level in the game for it's practicality. Same goes for all you out there who want voice-overs in a Zelda game. Whats wrong with you? Use your imagination. Are you not clear on what makes a video game fun and what separates it from other forms of media?

I think the franchise is in trouble when the next installment is called, Super Mario Déja Vu: The Nostalgia Adventures. Ooh! And the menu system will be a scrapbook of previous Mario games, and the levels will be updated versions of those games! Nintendo should pay me for coming up with ideas, instead of that tosser, Miyamoto.

(That last sentence was meant to be satirical. I mean no disrespect to the man who aided forging my childhood.)

I really liked this review. I thought it was quite amusing. One of his best in awhile, IMO.

However, when I did play SMG2 myself I enjoyed it quite a bit. But who takes Yahtzee's review as a 100% accurate account of what it is like to play the game? I know I don't.

That's what you think this is? Quoting Yahtzee to seem like some sort of genius? Hell no. I sometimes agree with Yahtzee, other times I don't. Yahtzeehas nothing to do with this. But really I've always wondered what it's like being a Mario fan. Sonic fans have been pretty strange, but Mario fans are more interesting for me. Do they keep playing the games because of nostalgia? Nintendo is masterful at remastering their games so perhaps it's a blast to the past for them? Or is it some sort of obligation for them, a way of thanking Nintendo for making some good games a long time ago and continuing making them over and over again for more years than I've been alive? To be honest, I don't know. Mario games are probably some of the most generic and unenjoyable platformers out there. And that's not because they're bad. It's because they're not trying to be different from each other. And that is very boring to me. Ratchet and Clank is better, Little Big Planet is better, Banjo Kazooie is better, Sly Cooper is better. You're gonna have to enlighten me as to what drives you to play these games, because I honestly have no clue.

He wants Nintendo to create some new characters - what's so hard to understand? Why not try something new with the story beyond "Princess kidnapped, must rescue"? The story of a platform game is pretty unimportant, but at least pretend that you're making an effort you know?
Also, this is the first Mario game in a while which is so blatantly lazy. It's the exact same concept and game mechanics, with some new levels. 64 to Sunshine? Different. Sunshine to Galaxy? Different. Galaxy to Galaxy 2? $$$$$$$$
Not saying the game isn't fun - as Yahtzee himself mentioned - but it is their laziest effort in quite some time....no change in mechanics or style. How about a new 3D platformer with new mechanics in a new art style? That's what Yahtzee wants, Nintendo to stop falling back on Mario to bail them out when criticism arises about them neglecting their core users.

The Simpsons rock.

Okay, first off before I start complaining about this review by a man set out to make the game look as bad as possible, let me define what I think a good sequel is. A good sequel to a game adds to what was important to the previous one. Like I think the Ratchet and Clank sequels were done okay because they added to what was very important: the weapons; and this Mario game adds to what was important: levels and power-ups. The things yahtzee complains about in this game are so stupid. Like how he complains about the new world selection. Why? It works great in the game. Not only that, it's honestly a very small part. Two, yahtzee complains about the Throwback Galaxy because Super Mario 64 hasn't aged well. This makes no sense, as whether or not 64 has aged well is irrelevant. You play that level with Super Mario Galaxy 2 controls; and the level is really fun (which yahtzee would know if he played it). Also yahtzee makes it seem like the developers run out of ideas while making it; I guess he forgot to notice there's like 40 new levels in it, with out a single one that you can really call uncreative. Yahtzee really was scraping to the bottom of the barrel to find anything to complain about in this game, and it leads me to believe that all he did was play the game for ten minutes, find other reviews for it, copy the most common complaints, and then make a review. Seriously, if anybody wants to know what the quality of the game is, go find other reviews because this one is pretty stupid. Now, let me get something else clear, I don't disagree with him solely because he doesn't like the game, I disagree with him because all his reasons for doing so are unfounded.

Edit: I don't want to insult anybody, but there are so many comments in this thread that are just dum. Seeing a bunch anti-Nintendo-fanboys congregate is just as painful as seeing a bunch of Nintendo-fanboys congregate. Also, people seem to care more about how funny yahtzee is rather than accurate. If he said, " Age of Empires 2 is a first-person shooter where you play as ass butt doo-doo violence sex offenisive insult insult ass insult rape insult" some of these people would think it is good review.

Lol the only reason he meandered was because he already reviewed the game.. in the form of the first mario galaxy!
