I wish I could remember the ZP episode where Yahtzee said he misses the Pacman method of story-telling--Eat pellets, avoid ghosts.

Well, with every Mario game, you get that exact same method--Get stars, beat up some giant dinosaur/turtle thing.

Can we try to be a bit more consistent, Yahtzee?

Hasn't Mario always been dumbed down for all the family? Heck, my 4 year old cousin plays this lol. I don't own a Wii and nor do I want one, so I won't be owning this game! =]

It's a Mario game. It's pretty obvious what to expect.

I'd still play it, though. It's good to jump into the time machine and head back to 1992 every now and then.

However, I have to say something to people who take Yahtzee's reviews as the main deciding factor in your purchases: How stupid are you? Yes, Yahtzee's a critic/QA man/reviewer/whatever he wants to call himself in a review on a given week, and yes, the reviews are as informative about what the game will entail as they are funny. However, his taste in games and (I assume) yours may not be one in the same. True, games like Psychonauts and Saints Row 2 are awesome, but maybe there are games Yahtzee's reviewed that you may like and he was more or less (hard to tell, sometimes) negavite toward. Example, Yahtzee seemed pretty negative toward Brewtahl Brutal Legend, but I loved it. By contrast, he seemed to enjoy Painkiller, while I found it sort of underwhelming. Point is, there are things that people agree on and things people don't. Even if Yahtzee says something's good or bad, that doesn't nessecarily mean that it will be to you. This is why I take reviews with a grain of salt, using it more or less as a jumping-off point of what to expect and not subject to the game's quality or my possible liking of it instead of taking the whole review and interpreting it as, "Yahtzee's words are the only truth, ergo it will be the sole deciding factor in a game purchase." Don't take the review at face value and completely ignore a game just because one person doesn't like it. I get it, though, you don't want to blow money on a bad game. That's why video stores and Gamefly exist. How do you know if Silent Hill 2 was the epitome of atmosphere in a game? Maybe Super Mario Galaxy 2 wasn't a glorified expansion pack. Try it for yourself and find out.

So basically Mario Galaxy 2 main problem is that it is basically Mario Galaxy 1. Ok, if you where some how given the rights to make the next major Mario title, what would you do with the concept? Nintendo's only requirement for is that it is made and making it anything that wouldn't get an E rating since they have to hide there evil coperate ways to the masses somehow.
As regular viewers are aware, Yahtzee despises the concept of sequels so it's more than likely that if given control of the IP he would murder it and liberally apply fire and salt afterward.

I'm actually disappointed. I was hoping he'd review Singularity this week.
One, he has said that a good sequel can be done if it used as a jumping point for a new and interesting story (Half-Life 2) while a bad sequel just wallows in the original (basically every 3D sonic game of the last decade).

Two, since Singularity seams such an average FPS from what I seen and heard from every corner of the internet I doubt he would have anything interesting to say about it.

One of the best I've seen yet, as for who is who (id, ego, superego) the question is actually a bit difficult.

Obviously Bowser is the id.
Mario seems to be the ego (he's always yelled at by everyone "go save her you dumb shit!")
but that leaves Peach as the.....superego?

That doesn't make sense to me, she's not performing any selfless deeds guided by her internal "moral compass" she's just screaming her head off "save me, *****!"

I think Bowser is the id.
Mario is the ego.
and Peach is some dumb ***** who is sick of being kidnapped.

What? Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't add anything?! How surprising! (obvious sarcasm).
Also I'm a bit of a Simpson's fanboy, I personally think that it's one of the best cartoons ever created, but I'm also a Yahtzee fanboy and what he said about the simpsons made me think about something. Yahtzee has made around 150 episodes now, 153 if you count the ones he did on youtube. The number of episodes the Simpson's pumped out before they started to suck (according to Yahtzee) is 103. I'm not saying that the Simpsons are some sort of default measurement stick for comedy shows but if it is impossible to keep something good going for entertainment for more than 103 episodes, Yahtzee is playing on borrowed time.
Of course I don't agree, and I think that even though the Simpson's has lost a bit of subtelty it still an excellent show. And I still think ZP is funny... I think my point is that it might be true that some things get less fun the more of it you see, but the Simpson's might be an exception. And ZP is and exception too. I know a lot of you don't agree, but that is just my thoughts on the subject.
It was still a pretty good/funny review over all. it just made me very hungry for cake. (and not the metaphorical kind..; )

Looks like Yahtzee needs better source material than, "this is the same game I played before, plus one." Not that he wasn't up to the challenge of producing a whole lot of content over nothing, but the quality suffered nonetheless.

Nintendo whores its IPs. The innuendo behind [http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=247] Princess Peach's, "cake." We've heard these ones before, you know?

Time for another retro review of something different. I nominate Odin's Sphere. It's got just enough right and wrong with it to be fertile ground.
Thank you for referencing that. I was just about to do that. but I wanted to see if anyone else did.

I suppose only the Aussies and Canucks might get that one.
And the Danes, and the Dutch, and the Norwegians, and the Spanish, and the Swedes, and the Japanese...

I should explain to non-Brits, the W.I is a British organisation that's been around for donkey's years. W.I stands for Women's Institute, a group of elderly middle class women who spend their time baking 'cakes', holding 'cake' fairs, swapping 'cake' recipes, and other things that all involve 'cake'.
I beg your pardon sir, the WI was born here in Canada, in my hometown [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_Institute#History]. I've been to the founders' house, and seen where they first shared their 'cake'.

The slapping bit was a nice touch. As well as the Bowie references.

Also, I learned something new. You over in Britain use the term "Overtake" instead of "Passing?" I'm guessing that since Yahtzee is British born his terms probably come from there and not the Outback, but I could be wrong.

I can't agree more, i used to love games like Call of Duty but now it's become so common i might as well hold out for like seven games and only then will it have improved slightly. Mario is one the reasons i didn't get the wii, why buy a console with only one or two games its madness i tell you.

Funnily enough, I was drinking wine while watching this...
Also i love the text adventure (Am I the only who read it? No I ca';t be arsed to look at old comments yet).

And yes.

As a longstanding Nintendo fan I am BORED BORED BORED of having Metroid and mario shoved down my throat every six months. Oh god if nintendo could find it within themselves to do something interesting and different.

NO. Guitar hero is not interesting and different. Wii sports is not interesting and different. Mario party ...16? Is not interesting and different. Some stupid lame attempt at a donkey kong themed music game is not interesting and different. As well as they make these games, as fun as they are, I'm getting so fucking bored.

I would hope against hope that nintendo do something original again. But I doubt that will happen.

Now that was a review where I was not surprised. I called Yahtzee would label Mario Galaxy 2 as an stagnation of the franchise, but what surprised me is that he ended up admitting it was fun. So I will follow his request/advice. I am going out to the beach this weekend. I haven't done that in years.
