hi all, newbie / newfag reporting to his first post!
i think what most of the guys in here forget (over 1100 posts, jesus tabdancing christ!) is that this is more comedy than actual professional game review (no offense, and no i dont think that sites like gametrailers or gamespot are doing a better job either since thats honestly asskissing) so whats so amusing about the zero punctuation series, in my opinion, is that it works like the darker, pissed off brother of gamespot who invites us into his basement to a mountain dew, and a newsflash how the world of gaming sucks. which is perfect entertainment! but not better gamereviewing than asskissing games.

so that thing aside, what the hell is the definition of a fanboy? from urban dictionary i can qoute the closest to what Yahtzee is referring to: "A person who is completely loyal to a game or company reguardless of if they suck or not." so, yes in his eyes people who like ssbb are fanboys/girls. because he thinks that the game sucks. but if i would say: 'i think portal sucks major balls!' that would make mr Croshaw a fanboy, since he cant accept that the game sucks, even if i defined in bad in my opinion. you may now go 'Yea okay, but only you think the game sucks! that doesn't make him a fanboy!' - BINGO, its a subjective matter wherever a game sucks or not. which makes the 'he is a fanboy!' only exist in your narrow human skulls. and furthermore it... why the hell do i argue with you?...

After a few minutes understanding what you're saying (sorry, but it's true), I'd have to say that I agree with you for the most part.

However, your definition of a fanboy is a bit off. Urban Dictionary, you said, defined a fanboy as "A person who is completely loyal to a game or company reguardless of if they suck or not." This, however, doesn't mean that fanboys only exist for games people think are bad. Rather, they exist for all games, bad or good. Every game has fanboys (with the exception of games based off reality TV. Maybe).

Thus, your argument that, if you hate Portal, people who don't are fanboys, is rendered obsolete. Fanboyism isn't subjective in the least. What IS subjective, yes, is the quality of a game, and a person's opinion of said game.

I watch ZP knowing that it's one man's opinion. Occasionally, I agree with him about things. Occasionally, I don't. It's not a review as such: it's an opinion piece.

While writing this post, I had a slight epiphany: all reviews are opinion pieces. The difference is that, for the most part, professional reviews (ie those in videogame magazines and the like) are done by people who enjoy the genre closest to that of the game they're reviewing, whereas Yahtzee (third time to type it correctly!) has to review games from all genres. Thus, his reviews may, on occasion, be negative, because he's reviewing a game-type he's none-too-fond of.

What all this boils down to is this: fanboyism isn't subjective, quality of game is; all reviews are opinion pieces; this thread has gone on too fscking long.

Protip: Stupidity is stupid.

I've yet to see an intelligent argument criticizing Yahtzee's excellent review. My advice to those who wish to whine about Yahtzee's review - don't.

In other news, I found the review to be hilarious, and very true. I played SSBB at a friends house the other day - we had more fun with two nerf guns that were lying about then actually playing the game. That's kinda sad, if you think about it.
That is kinda sad considering Brawl's a fun game. Maybe not as good as Melee was, but still good.
But I have no idea why so many people are bitching about this review. Just laugh it up and leave it alone.

A spot on review, despite what brawl fanboys might think. Other than over half the content being locked away in a cage on the dark of the moon at the end of adventure mode or endless hours of gameplay, my biggest problem with Brawl is that once you've mixed up the maps, characters and items enough, you basically just rehashing the same fight with different backgrounds and attacks that look different but rarely have a different effect.

So that's like....every fighting game. What's your point?
Every fighting game has different maps, different characters, and I'm sure others have items too.
What is the point that you're trying to get across here?

I cracked up at "that guy" part. I must admit SSBB is very fun to play if you enjoy Nintendo games, but not enough for me to buy it =P.

what is wrong with you people unlocking characters is fucking normal since when did it become a chore to unlock people in a game you practically get everybody unlocked in supspace emissary anyway unlocking snake is easy as shit you just play on his level 15 times which ifyou put it on one minute is fifteen minutes not an hour by one irthday party I only had three people to unlock and they were no big deal.

There we go, finally came along and registered ^^

Nice review, gonna buy the game tomorrow when it releases in Europe :D What i don't get however is why Yahtzee keeps ranting about "that guys" who play the game on their own and beat everyone else only to state that this doesn't apply to SSBB since it's a random button masher :-/

Right i looked at this and saw alot of people complain about the game, so i went out and bought it, wait i lied a rented it for £1.50 and as soon as i got to play it i turned it off cursed at my self for wasting a double cone ice cream (which is £1.50) and i will proberly be slagged off so go ahead, and while you do so please don't take offence if i don't care

here is another thing, when did they decide in the gaming industry for you to unlock stuff, i bought (rented) the game so i could be able to have access to every character, not to flaff about trying to unlock some one. but yet again that is now with all fighting games like DOA so on so forth

The one point I disagree with is when he claims the game is a button masher. While this is true of most fighting games, it is not of Super Smash Bros. Simply because the combos are to simple and the arenas are large.

When combos are large button sequences strung together it's possible to smash buttons and randomly pull out a big combo. In Super Smash Bros. each combo consists of one to two buttons and a single move.

In a normal fighting game there is very little space to fight, so every move is nearly a guaranteed hit. In Super Smash Bros. however there is enough space to easily avoid attacks. So if someone is button mashing, they are simply standing on one side of the screen using random attacks.

Don't worry, there's this little thing called humour. Perhaps you two should be introduced sometime?
