I have seen that used on both ends of the spectrum and I just shake my head.
I'm reminded of that one reviewer who accused MK 11 of encouraging violence against women, despite the fact that the men are far from safe from brutality in that game. There is certainly a narrative choice in that game I'd call sexist, but that isn't it.

Not sure what exactly happened to his mindset between Kratos feeding a helpless bare breasted maiden to a door mechanism in GoW3 for the trophy, “I wanted to, but I didn’t…” and the curb stomp in Ascension for “Bros before hoes”, but it would be interesting to hear his take on each now that the dust has settled, and God of War is a whole different beast. Actually I also kinda wonder what he thinks of the new one.
I don’t know where his head currently is at, or how much of it is his own opinion vs merely toeing the line. But really that was around the time when the whole push for more decency in gaming started IIRC. GoW has always sort of reveled in juvenile humor bits, but there’s always the final straw at some point.

From the story mode? It’s been a while but I’m curious where/who that was about, as an MK nerd mostly.
GoW3 was released during the tail end of the 2008 era of gaming windfall where pandering to the audience was more important than personal conscience
But that's thing, that final straw seems very arbitrary and convenient. Why start now though? You have all the time in the world back then, and that's what irritates me about people like that. Yeah, I know opinions change, but not that fast. Once again, the line is drawn at a guy defending himself from other villains that want to cause harm to him. If you draw a line there, but not when actual innocent people who can't defend themselves or are vaguely in the way are killed, then you lost my sympathy. People like that are full of shit.

Guessing it was a timing thing, like what @Gyrobot said above. Whatever ratio of personal vs professional feelings were involved between the two is anyone’s guess.
