I had a thought that went back to what they were saying about the game when it was in development. The problem with, and I'm giving a vague quote, "Not punching down" or "Treating people with more respect" is that it can, and often does, lead to losing that jerk camaraderie you can have with really close friends. If you're with a bunch of nerds and everyone there is a nerd and everyone is friends then everyone can make fun of each other. Someone could make a joke about someone else in the room jerking off to porn of anime characters and everyone would be cool with it. The issue with trying to sanitize things is that it can lead to not just take out things that are legit hurtful but also things that would be considered an in joke with friends. I dunno, random train of thought I had about a problem with the humor in the game. From clips I saw, the main problem was it held back too much and too often.

I don't watch South Park anymore, but it's good to know they acknowledge they're screw ups and mistakes and actually try to be better people for it.

Any episode after Mr Garrison got a sex change for a few seasons. Matt and Trey both regret making it, and even back then, it pissed off a lot of fans. Their attitudes towards trans people have changed and are more positive for it. They also care about global warming and the negative effects on Earth. Before that point, they were all global warming isn't real nor much of a problem.

If it doesn't show up on the Microsoft or Xbox store, then odds are it's not backwards compatible. The first Saints Row game was only exclusive to the 360. Check the backwards compatibility list. All I can say is I hope you have a spare Xbox 360 lying around. Just go to amazon, ebay, or find your second hand gaming store that's not GameStop.

The first game is really just San Andreas lite. Not much stands out, and the gangster motif goes super hard to the point of the audience not taking it seriously as the creators wanted to be. The second game is so much better. Also, you can't choose genders in the first game. The character will always be male.

Yeah, honestly I looked into SR1 when I first got into the series and decided it wasn't worth trying to track down. Nothing about it seemed particularly interesting and settled for a video hitting the main plot points....and I barely remember that. I barely even remember why the playa was set up on the exploding boat in the first place, not that it really matters past the 2nd game.

The second game is on the playstation gamepass thing so I have that. But I just wanted to check out the OG games after this fucking reboot disaster.

"Make your own" or "let's see you do better" is one of the worst defenses for something not being good. I'm not a professional chef, but I know damn well if my steak is overcooked, and I shouldn't have to make my own steak to have it done right if I'm paying for it. I'm glad you are happy with the game the way it is. Truly, good for you. That doesn't mean you should feel smug and mighty over everyone who disagrees with you because they have the audacity to disagree.

You're really not missing much. The first Saints Row was little more than a shameless GTA knockoff, and not a good one at that. The franchise really didn't hit its "wacky" stride until SR2, and didn't become it's own-enough thing until SR3 and beyond. If you're still curious to try and track it down, keep your expectations low. Or better yet, just watch a let's play and save yourself the suffering altogether.

Even then, I'd say SR 2 was relatively grounded. Goofier than GTA at the time, sure, but I wouldn't call it wacky, either. Wacky was when they introduced a city where the mayor is Burt Reynolds. Not a character played by Burt Reynolds, but actual Burt Fucking Reynolds.

Tho honestly, I would suggest saving the money. Cuz the first game is more a straight GTA knockoff, but not a good one. Saint's Row 2 is where the series developed its own identity, and it's this that the reboot tried to, eh, reboot, not the original.

Exactly. That's why SR2 was getting so much praise back then. While still grounded, it knew how to have fun and did not try to be super serious like GTA IV, and most of the San Andreas clones from the 6th generation of gaming.

I'm not a professional chef, but I know damn well if my steak is overcooked, and I shouldn't have to make my own steak to have it done right if I'm paying for it. I'm glad you are happy with the game the way it is. Truly, good for you. That doesn't mean you should feel smug and mighty over everyone who disagrees with you because they have the audacity to disagree.

For me it's more about the fact is if the situation was so bleak we would have seen competitors trying to break the trend but we are not, so this is what we are gonna get and accept as the norm. I would love to see an unapologetically edgy game, but we are never going to get one again

Julius was the one who set The Playa up. The reason why was because the Saints were becoming too powerful, and became the Vice Kings wearing purple. Funny, because Julius is voiced by Keith David, and they bring the actor back again in IV, but has a different character. I believe he played the Vice President.
