She doesn't have a life bar anymore (she just needs to be helped up whenever "damaged"), so you get to hog all the herbs for yourself. The game doesn't allow you to point your gun at her but you can and will kill her on accident while trying to shoot down whoever's carrying her away. Nobody's quite carried her away so I guess I can't complain, but it seems to happen more often here.

My biggest problem with this Ashley is ordering her around. You can't tell her to wait anywhere anymore, nor put her in a dumpster (except for one specific locker in the village area). You can tell her to get either close or super close to you, and in my experience it makes absolutely no difference.

The lack of a health bar takes away some of the tension, but she's generally more inconvenient as an escort because the game forces her so much on the player.

The knife certainly doesn't. Headshot/kick/slash was my go-to in the original. Here the knife will break after 3 or 4 uses. You have to keep repairing it and also upgrading it. The game gives you even more knives to carry around as a compromise. I don't think they're as powerful as your main knife but I end up equipping them until I use them all up just to keep the main knife safe from repairs.
I fully expect the default knife to be modded for infinite durability before too long.

So I just beat the giant boss in the Quarry. I have a question - why bother having a run button if the run is A. not much faster than the walk, and B. isn't fast enough to dodge an enemy? I took every single hit from the giant. Took me like 3 attempts. If he charged, I attempted to run, got hit. If he swung, I attempted to run, got hit. If he grabbed, I attempted to run, got hit. No matter where I was in the quarry, not matter where the Giant was, it had a 100% hit chance because Leon runs like an overloaded dump-truck on flat tires.

Really? El Gigante only grabbed me twice and that was it. I didn't get hit by any of his punches. I did bump up the sensitivity movement, but not by too much. You playing on Series/One X or PC? You mentioned the A button.

The same reason that sprinting on the horse in DA:I didn't actually move faster and just added speed lines. Just for the psychological effect.

My pros and cons with this game.

Pros:

  • Leon being more capable in combat than ever before. You can parry, dodge, and duck/evade. Optional stealth that while not perfect, can be useful and some sections can be completely stealthed, if you're good enough.
  • Better characterizations for Leon, Ashley, Ada, and Krauser. This game actually made me like Ada somewhat for once. I have not really liked her since og RE2. Looks Capcom finally took the hint on where they screwed up with the character. Shinji Mikami didn't exactly help either, so it's not all on them. Leon transition from 2 to 4 is more believable here than the OGs. Nothing against RE4 Leon, but all they did was turn him into Dante. Ashley is more proactive and helpful. I like the buildup and development between her and Leon. Commanding her was not too much of an issue, but was a little awkward in the beginning. Krauser I won't exactly spoil, but goddamn did I love everything about him here, than I did in the original!
  • The level design is airtight and cuts out the fluff I either didn't like or found indifferent. While at the same time, being expansive without being overbearing. I'll make a note on that later.
  • Game still has that arcade feel with the extra visceralness.
  • Weapons are great to use and upgrade.
  • The new and remixed soundtrack is awesome!

Cons:
  • Some of the side quests can be repetitive. Most of them either boil down towards, shoot blue medallions, kill some rats, kill a beefed-up monster (these I do enjoy the most), etc. I get keeping the player busy, but they could have used some more variety.
  • It's hard to tell where items spawn, because of the muted color pallet. This is especially true for outdoor locations. The number of times I had to check my map to make sure I didn't miss a treasure, money, or ammo. They need to make those indicators brighter or pop-up more. When you're in the castle this rarely becomes a problem. In most of the other environments, at least one or two items are going to blend into the background. Capcom should make a patch to make these items more noticeable.
  • No Mercenaries unlocked after beating the game. I know it'll be free DLC, but come on. This a trend Capcom needs to stop doing. Why are all these bonus modes once part of the game, now being made as (mostly) free DLC? I know time and budget can be an issue, but it makes no sense. Separate Ways not being unlocked from the start doesn't bother me, because it only happened starting with the PS2 port and not the original. I know I got NG+ to keep me busy, yet I have this gut feeling that Mercenaries won't come out until another few months.

If anything I'm surprised it's not an unlockable. OG mode or something.
There is an unlockable knife that can be made unbreakable, but you have to complete the game first to get it. I looked it up before making that comment and really, it's okay but like I said I expect the regular knife to be modded to be unbreakable soon enough.

Those are the kind of rewards where I always wonder what the point is. You've already beaten the game, why get something that just makes it easier as a reward? At least with usual RE infinite rocket launcher the reward is being able to just effortlessly wreck everything with is good for a quick runthrough.

You need to be some special kind of moron to make a tripwire trap that beeps constantly.
The basic plagas infected ain't that clever. They're more or less drones that tries to look/behave normal. They walk into their bear traps and wire traps, if you let them. It even happens to the soldier infected plagas. And these guys have trip wires without the beeps.

I'd say the running speed is fine, it's just that el Gigante has a bit of a homing issue. You can get a charm from the shooting range (randomly generated though) that increases your running speed by 8%, which doesn't sound like much but you can actually tell the difference.

Played a bit of it. Not really won over. It's just, you know, with the first three RE games I get why they felt a remake was in order. The old fashioned tank control, fixed camera angle survival horror design philosophy is kind of antiquated. So they had every reason to remake them in a way that's less clunky.

But honestly, with the RE4 Remake I feel like they took a game that still controls more intuitively than a lot of current releases and if anything, made it more clunky. I know this is a very debatable position, but I think the original Resi 4 still stands as a near perfect action game, near two decades later. If you want to change anything about it, you really need to be able to justify it.

And between change for the better, change for the worse and change for changes sake, the remake has a bit of the first, a bit of the second and a lot of the third, I feel. The more grounded tone feels kinda off to me. You get the more gothic environments and downplayed dialogue and Ashley's weird haircut and blazer that, honestly, look like they belong on old lady and it's just not quite doing it for me. Like I said, it feels like change for changes sake.

And then you have the gameplay. Making you able to move and shoot at the same time was obviously a no brainer, it's really the only design element of the original Resi 4 that seems outdated. But then you get rudimentary stealth and a knife parry and movement and gunplay that feels just slightly less fluid than it should and it makes me wonder if there's really any good reason to play the remake over the original. I mean, I like the Last of Us games but I never felt RE4 needed to play more like them. And then there's the knife durability which has got to be one of the most "Who even asked for this?"mechanics I've ever seen.

I guess RE4 is just a game where I'm hard to please. There aren't that many obvious ways to modernize or meaningfully improve on the original. And most of what I liked about the original is still intact, overall. But so far I haven't seen much that I'd call an improvement. The reason why it needed to be made isn't as self evident as with the previous two remakes, is what what I'm saying.
