Ai is a tool, but businesses are always looking for ways to cut costs and employees are a big cost. If they think they can get away with getting rid of a bunch of employees and using ai instead they will do it. They aren't above churning out slop since at this point, quality means very little when shareholders are involved.
A tool for plagiarism, yes. So long as A.I. needs the internet to function it means it needs to steal other people's work to function. People who didn't consent to their work and data to get cribbed by tech companies.
That's not even mentioning the amount of water it guzzles and poisons to do so. And for what? For shit that looks worse, sounds worse, and is costing people their jobs.
If Larian or any other game studio uses generative A.I. let them be raked over the coals for it.

I don't trust that article at all, or at least the summary of it since we had Doom Darkages, Silksong and BF6 come out. Silksong was so big it crashed store fronts.

My nephew who only plays Roblox wanted Silksong.
I mean it's literallythe same thing that happens with self checkouts at grocery stores, and ordering kiosks in fast food. Technology has always cut jobs and will continue to do so. The skill floor people must aspire to gets higher over time as we automate and simply positions that even the most brain dead people can do.
Funny how people are so concerned for the Artist's but nobody gave a shit when the grocery bagger, or the kid asking you if you wanted fries with your bigmac got fired.
AI is just the outrage of the month, but it'll become so normallized in the next few years that people will completely forget it was ever a problem.

Ai models need training, they don't "steal" specifically, they learn from the material they are shown and emulate it. So let me give you a perfect use case. Larian takes all their artist's work and feeds that concept art throughout the years of making games to create a "style" model. Now those same artists use the AI to make images faster based off their OWN work to speed up the concept artwork process. The AI stole nothing, and again is just a tool. Now instead of concept arts, the artists can now focus on finalizing those concepts for art to actually go into the game and thus eliminating a ton of wasted development time.
It's not all stealing, and frankly using someone's art style isn't really stealing there are many many many many artists that "steal" simply my being inffluenced by other artists. How many anime looks the fucking same? Or characters that are basically just knock-offs of other characters. Homelander is just Superman, okay that's stealing. Invincible is also Superman, so that's stealing too right?
Style cannot be copyrighted, so unless you are using AI to make a Wolverine game without Marvel backing, you aren't stealing anything.

IMO it should be kept at surface-level, quantitative work.
Using it for the likes of code-rview (but have human eyes review and test at the end), develop suggestion of the world theme, or create a roadmap and project planning, those are fine.
What are not fine is replacing VAs, asking to develop the world design and aesthetics, draw concept arts, or god-forbid have it do 100% of the QA work.

Like, I understand why everyone feels frustrated and loath the usage of AI; Just look at Microsoft's windows 11's co-pilot.
But FFS, at least understand the context of how AI is used first, and then make the decision for yourself on whether it's a bad use or not.

Did Larian say they were doing that? That they were taking the art that they as a studio made over the years to create a style model? Or did they say they were using generative A.I? Because if they're using generative A.I. they are using other people's work that was posted online and doesn't belong to Larian. Also, Larian already has a style model, it's called the art department, populated by actual humans with years of creative experience. And no A.I. tool can improve on their work, only make it faster and far shittier.
A.I. can only steal, that's what A.I is. Please don't put actual human creative endeavors inspired by others on the same pedestal as an algorhythm that can only search through data. And yes, simply copying a specific style actually is looked down upon in the art world. When J.J. Abrams tried to be Steven Spielberg people called it out.
A.I. plagiarizes, its world wide usage leaves a carbon footprint the size of that of New York (and only growing), it puts thousands upon thousands of people out of work, and it only benefits billionaries. Oh, and they're artficially inflating its value which will likely create another crash that everyone besides the tech billionaries responsible end up paying for. It's fucking shit, and I have no respect for anyone who willfully uses it.

We actually see self checkout slowing down and even starting to go away since its much easier to steal from them then a manned register. Self check outs annoy me since I've had some really nice conversations with checkout people, even in the fast lanes and its annoying that we are getting rid of even that level of human contact. So much modern conveyance is just a way to get rid of having to talk to another person and I think that will be really bad for humans in general. People get really weird when they are too isolated.
I mean I agree, human interact is important and people don't talk to people face to face in real life enough these days and i think that is a big part of way people's opinions seem to get so extreme on EVERYTHING these days because people have forgotten what human interaction is actually like.
If a child draws a picture from a Connect-the-dots book, are they stealing? Is a cosplayer stealing when making a costume from someone else's creation?
You are just thinking in the black and white of all A.I. is bad and that's the end of it. And that's simply wrong. It doesn't really matter what Larion is doing because people have already sperged out on the A.I, even though the CEO literally said they didn't lay off any artists because of it.
Companies that laid people off in favor of A.I. you have to look at why. If they got layoff because they were doing redundant jobs that A.I. solves, then oh well. How many farmhands got fired as farm machinery got more and more advanced. A.I is just a tech tool that will change the way jobs are done in addition to eliminate some that are basic jobs in the first place. Just like the check-outs, the ordering Kiosks, robots that build cars which literally destroyed Detroit, but you know what happened to those factory workers? The smart workers learned how to maintain and service the machines that now do the car building. They evolved their skillset in order to keep jobs in the same industry.
This is how technological progression happens. You can not like it but it isn't the 100% evil you are making it out to be.

Ai isn't like tracing, ai is more like making a collage. It takes someone else's art and uses parts of it to make things. Nothing is original, its just pieces from someone else's work.
So are character's that are copies of other characters original? Or are they just copies of someone else's work?
And even still you are only talking about the AI models that the public uses. What is being used in the professional sector is a completely different animal. Like in the example I gave above, Larion can feed a model their own artwork and train it on their own art so that the model spits out concept arts that are "stealing" from their own previous arts. And more advanced models in professional settings can do even more shit. AI takes examples from what it's trained on, it's not just doing a big copy-paste remix, that isn't how it works.
