We need another Cold War

China is a nation locked into place. To the north and south west are two nuclear powers with effective modern militaries. To the East, there are two powerful economic nations back by the american military. The ocean is largely under america's sphere of influence. Despite it's military power, it is largely landlocked militarily.

But this has not stopped china from practicing a different kind of imperialism. Instead of military might, it has used economic power to force chinese values on other countries, and curve criticism. Even after the corona virus epidemic, it has been difficult to hold china accountable, as they export a massive amount of medicine to other nations. They have been buying large stocks in foreign companies, while requiring that western countries do business through chinese companies. Material released on a global market are often made to appeal to Chinese audiences, allowing the chinese communist parties to essentially use foreign businesses as mouth pieces for their propoganda.

I think the time has come for a new cold war, wherein the chinese government is isolated and held to account, financially, for their behavior. I also believe that it is time that we acknowledge taiwan, build a military base there, begin a nuclear program in japan and south korea, and increase naval presence in the sea around china. Furthermore, we should bolster our alliances with india, south korea, japan, australia, and europe. China should not be allowed to export its brand of dictatorial politics onto the free world.

Um. No. Nuclear MAD stalemate is a bad thing to aspire to. I'd rather just have a nice conventional war.

Sure. TikTok is a threat to civilisation, but Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. were absolutely fine.

Ideally, everyone could "just get along". Unfortunately, history suggests that is rarely the case, and China is almost guaranteed to be some degree of geopolitical opponent. On the evidence of China's repression of its own citizens, given a choice of "them and us", I choose us hands down and I think we should act to restrict its influence: not aggressive, mind, just sensible defensive measures.

Pretty sure putting the world on the brink of nuclear annihilation figures rather heavily into most modern Christianity end times cults.

Maybe, but usually these cults also call for exilingresettling all the practicing Jews into Israel first.

Eh, the one child policy and gender selection is going to hit China's demographics hard in the coming years. Might want to look to the beams in our own eyes.

OTOH, with the US's random political convulsings, other nations need to start looking at their defence budgets and allies.

We're already in another cold war, or more precisely, several. The US and Russia, the US and China, the US and North Korea, India and Pakistan, the US and Iran, and Israel and Iran, to name but a few. The difference is that this time the US and China are heavily co-dependent, and neither wants to take the economic hit of shutting off relations first.

Judging from our yearly military budget, we never stopped fighting the last one

First off, where are all those people worried about Cancelling? I thought we were against that? Being associated with China shouldn’t lead to deplatforming. Or at least, that’s what I thought was bad a few months ago. Maybe come up with proof first

Came here to say this. If you think your data is safe just because its with the US, you are gravely mistaken. It might be better than China but not by much.

Also, all deregulation means is that we are now regulated by companies, rather than the government regulated companies for our benefit. Regulation doesn’t go away, it devolves to the next highest level of power. We’ve had this wonderful deregulation for 4 decades and it has no where near been a utopia that Reagan pretended. Welcome to Capitalism, where you are the product

A conventional war would just lead to a nuclear war in the end anyway. Better to contain china militarily and economically. This includes the use of nuclear weapons, and a build up of our navy in the region around china.

Because, for the time being, I live in it.

Who says I'm against cancelling? China has death camps filled with Muslims. They force women to have abortions against their wills. They've turned their country into an Orwellian nightmare, and they drag people off to be imprisoned or tortured. Cancel them. Cancel any corporation that does business with them. Cancel any individual that stands up for them. I love cancel culture.

Not interested at all. I remember the last Cold War well enough. And it is good it is over and i never had to fight American imperialists trying to crush our communist communities.

If you really want to have a cold war with China, please do it yourself. The EU should be neutral. We don't really have competing interests. We can work with the Chinese just fine and it is actually more plesent to do so sometimes than with the US. China has never tried to bully us into abandoning US technology for our next wireless system or placed sanctions to make us use their ressources over russian ones for our energy needs. Or sanctions to stop our industry from buissness with Iran which is perfectly fine according to our law and international treaties.

I don't trust them more.
