Depends. If you're looking for atmosphere and slow-burning horror, I'd suggest most of the above. If you're after the kind of 'OhshitohshitohshitohshitOHSHIT' kind of horror, something like Dead Space would be good.

Depends how you define a 'kids' book. By my own definitions, for older kids I'd choose His Dark Materials, The Edge Chronicles, Artemis Fowl and anything by Darren Shan or Garth Nix. For younger kids, Captain Underpants and the Jiggy McCue books.

Seconded. 1 - I'm not religious, and don't believe in a 'soul' in the Christian (or any other general) sense, but I would say that things like personality, feelings, thoughts, memories, everything that makes us truly human, could be construed as a 'soul'. Not seperate from the body and mind...
