30,000 Users Cut From Dating Site Because They Were "Ugly"
A virus let a ton of uggos join Beautifulpeople.com, but it's OK: The site has managed to ban them and protect its pretty members from the horrible sight.
Beautifulpeople.com has a habit of pissing people off on a regular basis, but this latest occurrence is pretty epic. The site just dumped approximately 30,000 members because they were deemed too damn ugly for the online community.
If you haven't heard of the site, Beautifulpeople.com is an online dating site for "beautiful men and women" that screens its applicants. However, the site was hit last month by the Shrek Virus (named for the animated ogre), which attacked the software used to screen new members. As a result, the site suddenly had a massive number of new people join its community.
Of course, Beautifulpeople.com wasn't happy about this little development. Several thousand of these new community members didn't measure up to the Denmark-based site's stringent beauty requirements, so it's being reported 30,000 "ugly" members were dropped from the roster.
Speaking to The Guardian, Greg Hodge of Beautifulpeople.com had this to say: "We have to stick to our founding principles of only accepting beautiful people -- that's what our members have paid for." Reportedly the site has set up a counseling hotline to help people who were dumped because, "we can't just sweep 30,000 ugly people under the carpet."
Up until the hotline bit, this story is fairly believable. The site made headlines earlier this year when it dumped 5,000 users who'd gained weight during the Holiday Season. But the whole hotline bit seems a little too sensational to be true; not only that, but the site seems to be down right now, so who knows what's actually going on over in that particular corner of the Web.
