49% Of Console Gamers Don't Buy DLC

i actually buy DLC regularly.
thus far, i've bought all of the Fallout: New Vegas DLC, even the ones that were just "hey, have a pile of guns". Bethesda's been really good about putting out high quality DLC, so i honestly don't feel bad paying the extra $9.99/ea for the big DLCs, or even the $2.99/ea for the weapon packs they released. I also really dug the Magicka DLC which i picked up on sale for $5 during the Summer promo. Plus, whenever available i'll pick up a Game of the Year edition of a game, like Oblivion or Fallout 3, then not have to pick up the DLC separately. though, when that happens it's just because they know that it's not going to be supported further.

however, i've only bought DLC off of Steam. I tried getting one of the Fallout 3 DLCs from Xbox LIVE ages ago, and found the interface unwieldy and irritating. not much has changed. ESPECIALLY because on XBL there's no way to just directly purchase the DLC you want with a credit card. you have to add points to your account first, THEN you can spend the points on the DLC. that's kinda bullshit.

I've bought DLC once (Da Vinci Disappearance. I love Leonardo, wanted to have more of him in the game since Brotherhood pretty much cut it down to maybe 4 real cut scenes with him). It cost me ten bucks and all I got out of it was about two hours (I had to get 100% for everything, otherwise it would have been more like 45 mins) and desatisfaction.

Outside of that, I've gotten games that have DLC only on the brand new copies, but I don't count that shit.

Definitely not going to get anymore DLC. Just does not seem worth my time.

The first 5 PC games I ever bought all got expansion packs. DLC is not special to me at all. Just another product to evaluate on its own merits.

I don't mind DLC most of the time. I look at stuff like Fallout 3 and New Vegas . . the DLC for them is CERTAINLY not just content they cut so they could sell separately. Those were entirely separate stories with additional items and gear. The only one that I know of where I can see it purposefully cut was Assassin's Creed 2, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Looked like they simply didn't have time to finish it.

DLC is overpriced crap 99% of the time. The other 1% is shit that should have been included with the game and some clown decided to rip it out and sell it separately to moronic free spenders who can't understand they are being ripped off, taken advantage of, and helping to support a terrible system.

Once again this picture tells the whole story:

What idiot thought previous expansion packs weren't cut content? Seriously, have they never played the fucking Sims? Or, you know, any game ever that had an expansion pack?
I'll give you an example: Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne.
One of my favorite expansion packs ever, it furthers the great story and set up Arthas as a big bad. Another example is World of Warcraft expansions.
A great example is Morrowind. It had great expansion packs, adding in new stories and new weapon/armor sets and side stories and new areas to explore and all sorts of new stuff NOT ORIGINALLY IN THE ORIGINAL GAME.

The only DLC I've ever bought was the sparkle pony in WoW if that even counts.

I believe that buying the game new entitles me to the entire game. I've got nothing against cosmetic stuff like those hats but I hate it when they try to sell campaigns and in game advantages without any way of obtaining them for free.

The Fallout 3 and New Vegas DLC gives the exact same bloody thing, except its cheaper, has better distribution and is integrated better. You have to admit that.
I was just arguing against your point that expansion packs are just cut content added back in for 30$.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I'm surprised the number is as high as it is, dlc for the most part is too expensive, I mean unless its 5 bucks or less, it probably costs too much for something that doesn't matter, really the only dlc that I can think of that is worth it is rockstars gta4 and red dead redemption stuff.

Maps should be free, as it stands maps just divide the user base and while that can work on a really popular title like cod or halo, it just hurts less popular ones like homefront.

Or, if you're feeling positive, 51% of console gamers do buy downloadable content, according to a recent survey.

The survey, done by entertainment research group EEDAR [http://www.eedar.com/], polled HD console owners on their DLC purchases over the past year. Nearly half of the respondents said they had not purchased DLC in 2011, compared to 60% in 2010, and 66% in 2009.
I might as well ask right off the bat: were they surveying only console owners who had Live/PSN? Because I imagine there's still a respectable percentage of gamers who don't play online that might factor into those numbers.
Agreed. Theres no mention in any article I could find, or even the abstract the put out. Their "methodology" section is very vague and hand wavy and gives no way to tell how they chose the survey participants.

Without knowing that, the result is practically meaningless.

I could choose participants from a list of console owners who dont have internet connections, and say that less than 1% of gamers buy DLC. I could have the survey be a popup 'on' the DLC store and say that 99% of gamers buy DLC.

Ah...I remember games during the ninties and early two thousands....

I wish more DLC was like the GTA4 and Red Dead. Gives you a fuck-tonne more stuff to do. Hell, Red Dead Undead was more or less a total conversion mod to turn a western world into a zombie game. A zombie game where the ONLY way to kill them is a head-shot. Or blown up. But mainly headshots.

The problem with me is that I'm in school right now, so I've basically not taken any of my systems with me and when I do play games and I want the DLC, I either don't have the money to purchase the stuff or when I do have the cash, I want to use it when I hang out with the friends. Therefore, I have to have an excess of money that I could purchase a large amount of DLC content for all my games at the same time...

I only get the DLC for games and devs that I really like and want to support. The only DLC I ever buy with regularity are Halo map packs since I whole-heartedly want to support Bungie and play the shit out of them anyway.

I'll be more likely to pick up an arcade game like Castle Crashers or a classic like Sonic 2 before getting DLC to any one main game though. The last exception to that was ME2 with a couple of the packs from there after I got a points card as a gift.

Most DLC is overpriced for the content you get. Here's some of the dumbest DLC I've seen:

6 new gun skins 6.99!
5 new multiplayer maps 14.99.
New story arc 15.99 (for like 2 hours of gameplay?...)
New playable character 5.99

That's MENTAL
5.99 is 1/10th the price of a new game for a character (or just a skin change), 5 multiplayer maps for 15? That's 1/4th the price of the game in question!! Most games are overpriced to begin with when it's 5 hours of game for 60 bucks but then there's this lackluster DLC with a pricetag comparable to the game cost. Why bother?
Pretty much. I mean, I justified getting the new Deus Ex DLC (for PC, of course, not for console, CHRIST no) because I figured 2-3 hours gametime/15$ is about five bucks an hour, which isn't that bad of a rate seeing that I've paid sixty bucks for less than that rate -_-.

But new guns? Skins? Why? I can understand if it's something like CoD where people will clock in hundreds of hours per month (I know people that only play CoD multiplayer. What a horrible existence) so they drop some money on new maps to play in. But the skins and other promotional crap is just dumb.

Reminds me of the reskins you can buy for Dawn of War II. It's just models, folks.

If they ever do PC I would be interested in one statistic, though: How do the DLC sales compare for game that allow modding and those that do not?

When I had a 360, I never bought a single DLC from any game and I even rarely do so with any PC game, except for Fallout 3/NV and Borderlands.

I personally like DLC. Then again the ones I buy are for games I love and are usually something I am fine with paying for. Look at Fallout New Vegas' DLC, they are all amazing and definitely worth ten dollars for hours of New Gameplay. The type I am not fine with is paying more than 2 dollars for costumes or skins.
