So I fired up Left 4 Dead 2 today after about 18 months away. Predictably enough, I am quite rusty.

No sooner did I take a hit than one of the other players started talking shit to me. "u suck fucking fag suck noob bro fucking suck bro" about sums it up. Five words in his vocabulary.

I can take a taunt or two, but this guy spent the next thirty minutes harranguing me with this textual sludge and urging the other players to votekick me. It was more important to him to tell me how bad I was than it was to play. I mean he was relentless. At first I thought I would ignore him, but it's awful hard to ignore text popping up on the screen when it might be a teammate telling me something useful. After 1/2 hour of abuse, I quit the server.

Now, here's what's really bothering me: I spectated him every time I was out of action, and he was a middling-to-good player at best, about like I was before I put the game down. My two brothers have always been better than I am, and they aren't championship material.

I can accept smack-talk from those who are genuinely great at the game. I don't enjoy it, but if most of what they're saying is true, I feel like they've "earned the right," or something.

But how can you call anyone a noob when your own score is only 20% higher than that of a guy who hasn't played in well over a year? How can you kill a teammate inside the safe room, make it about 100 yards with just the 3 of you, then blame the guy you killed for the wipe? How can you say it's anybody's fault but yours we didn't get to the safe room when I watched you leave all three of your teammates to die -- about ten seconds before you went down like a little ***** yourself?

It's a game, man. We're there to have fun. I like to win, but I also like to finish the round regardless of score. I learn as much from losing as I do from winning. More, even.

Thank you, (FC) Fat Man. I thought I was going to pick up an old favorite and have a pleasant couple of hours. Thank you for teaching me I am no longer welcome. Thank you for showing me that massive, unrelenting asshattery is the rule of the day. Please die in a fire at your earliest convenience. Feel free to use your last breath to call me a fucking noob. I promise I won't mind.

Escapists, I'm not sure I even have a question for y'all. Maybe I just needed to vent a little. But it boggles me, completely boggles me, to encounter someone so completely and utterly hateful. I cannot tell you how much it bothers me to see entitled little toads get what they want.

TL;DR: Please, to anyone reading this who happens to be a loudmouthed tool in multiplayer: I'm not going to tell you to stop, because you won't, but for fuck's sake back up your smacktalk with skills.

Yeah it really gets me when idiots talk smack. I just got back from a 6 month break from TF2.

Then I backstab them, because only idiots stop moving in TF2 to gloat whilst typing.

Sounds like what I put up with every time I fire up Heroes of Newerth. Except more often than not they end up eating those words when they realise I'm close to tournament level standard, and they're poor, low level pubbers who only pick carry heroes. SO satisfying to put them in their place.

League of Legends is the biggest offender I've experienced, but I hear HoN is even worse.

On LoL once I got bitched at for being on the bottom of the damage ranking.

I had done more healing than any single player on either team had done in damage.

Yeah, I like PC gaming better because fewer people talk... And the fact that I hardly play any online games.
Single player Garry's Mod: 204 Hours- Go!
But even still I don't hear that many people whilst playing team fortress... I also don't tend to look at those text box thingys a lot.

We should all gloat by hats in that game. Gloating by hats would be fun.

I wouldn't let people like that ruin your fun. If you see someone like that, just ignore them or quit the server straight away and play with other people. When you're badass enough to show that person how to truly rock, find them again and run circles around them leading the team while they choke on a Smoker.

I hear that a lot, but I've never once been insulted on CoD. In fact, once in a blue moon do I even see someone (hear someone?) using a microphone. Am I just super-lucky?

This is one of the reasons why I absolutely refuse to ever play the multiplayer in a game unless it is a private match with just a few close friends. I do play The Old Republic though and when I do I just close the chat window so I can't see what people are saying.

Generally the people who are good at the game don't smash talk they just get on with it.

You will always find the gobbiest mouthiest people, tend to be middle of the road players who really arn't great and often fail.

Its a childish thing to do but how do you get people to ignore your shit play? why you constantly point out someone who is worse than you so people dont look at yourself!.

Recently been finding this in dota although less since im getting better pairings, smash talk and ***** at me for going panda mid (totally viable) then shut up when i'm carrying the game for them -_-.

Advise? just change server sooner, let them have their hollow victory for making you leave, least your still giong to enjoy your game.

I usually play online with one or two of my friends on skype to chat with so I normally disable ingame voice and mostly ignore ingame chat, but when I do see one of these weirdos I usually go "lol@Internet Tough Guy here" usually followed by my friends chiming in with quips of their own. It usually goes on for a minute or two before the guy realizes I have backup and he's starting to sound like a whiny kid who doesn't get his way.

Truth be told I actually had a whiny bastard on my regular TF2 server who belted on that he 'was admin and people should stop spawn camping him or he will kick/ban" he said this both in chat and voice to which half the server began laughing at him as the other half countinued to spawn camp him. (our reg rule is to either A) Use a different exit or B) Deal with the camper yourself) The real bossman admin came on and muted his voice and warned, followed by a kick then a ban for each time he kept on chattering about his 'admin privledges' to anyone on our server.

edit: I actually kept video of the night on my WeGame account if anyone is interested in viewing it, though I warn you there's buttloads of swearing, a lil bit loud in volume and pretty darn whiny.

edit2: I believe games are for pleasure and the minute one stops having fun, they ought to log and take a break, read a book, or otherwise calm the eff down.

Wouldn't it have been much easier to join another lobby then listen to him and rant on the Escapist?

You're really not. It's actually a fairly typical experience. I've never really had anyone seriously talk shit, and the very few instances I did a mute or a humorous jab back at them fixes it pretty quickly. That or an ass kicking next round.

But the stereotype says that every CoD player is a raging 12 year old homophobic racist twat, so that must be the truth.

I'll give the CoD community one thing. They can acknowledge the worst parts of their fanbase and laugh at it:

It was with text, if you read.

OT: That's why you only play with friends. And while we're on the subject, I do like to play L4D2 and my steam profile is available for all to see.

Yeah, I've been avoiding L4D. Used to be pretty good at it, but my computer is on it's way out and can't handle much.
If you can't keep up you will get yelled at, or even if you are slightly rusty.
That's why I play more TF2, play medic- everyone loves a medic!

Except when you don't uber in time - what the fuck, you suck, uninstall the game

Come to think of it... can you mute people in L4D2? I actually have never had the need to look for that feature.
