I'll give the CoD community one thing. They can acknowledge the worst parts of their fanbase and laugh at it:

I often do the Peewee Herman soundboard thing just to troll the other players. My friend, who is a very avid CoD player, does the killing while I do the soundboard. It gets fucking hilarious.

But since we play on PS3, we don't get as many racist, 12 year-old ragers when compared to Xbox live. It's still a ton of fun, though.

Oh, God. This is epic. Definitely one of the videos I watch once a month, just because it makes me feel good.

My personal experience with ragers and other varieties of online asshats tends to involve very high doses of cheeky sarcasm. The one and only time I bothered with Gears of War's multiplayer, I tried sounding as sunny and bubbly as I possibly could, while thanking them for calling me a fucking ******.

After keeping this up for about five minutes, they usually got the message and focused on the game instead of trash-talking.

As for TF2, I tend to use the LotusClan servers, which are *generally* occupied by sensible folks. You always get the occasional idiotic mic-spammer, but we're pretty quick on the Mute button.

...which is usually followed by the mic-spammer flooding the chat box with "WTF, GUYS, THAT WAS FUNNY, DON'T U MUTE ME!"

Nope. It wasn't funny. If that fits your definition of humor, you need help.

Well PC, obviously. I'm using skype.

You say that like no one has ever been playing on a console with a computer next to them with Skype or Teamspeak on.

Why would you when you can use the party chat you mentioned?

Laptops tend to have mics as standard, whereas PS3 doesn't and 360 headsets are rally easy to break. So if not everyone has a mic we Skype it out, or Teamspeak it since you can use that on phones.

I don't play a lot of online multiplayer, so I don't get as much trash talk as others do (also I play in the morning so not a lot of the "usual" crowd is up). If I feel like there are a couple of idiots out there, I just mute their mics and everything is ok.

League of Legends is the biggest offender I've experienced, but I hear HoN is even worse.

~I wouldn't be sure about that. On LoL I've been going 9/17/4 and a guy on the other team who had no kills and very few assists was calling me a noob and telling me to "L2P". LoL Is a festering pile of shit, which is why I completely stopped playing the PvP on it, and have almost completely stopped playing it altogether.

from what I experinced LoL simply has more trolls
and Hon is a bit more elitist

LoL has been by far the worst online community I've played with, and to this day is the only time I actually decided to quit a game because of an asshole. I generally try to play with friends or people I know are not assholes. Its a shame because it is a really fun game when you don't have someone bitching at you.

If anyone cares the game I decided to quit had a Varus who decided to start trash talking me at Level 1 for not using a combination of two abilities (Sword + Stun as Leona) and continued bitching until I quit the game as he proceeded to rush the other team of a Soraka and Ez continuously. The combination of stupidity, being pure asshole, and just my mood at the time got the better of me.

This kind of thing started happening when gaming went online and competitive. Gamers in general used to be more mature, but once games like Halo came out, where the focus was pwning newbs, the maturity level went down the drain. The more competitive the game, the less mature the players.

I know Left 4 Dead is a co-op game. But the IQ drain from gaming's competitive focus has spread to all aspects of the industry.
