Sounds like what I put up with every time I fire up Heroes of Newerth. Except more often than not they end up eating those words when they realise I'm close to tournament level standard, and they're poor, low level pubbers who only pick carry heroes. SO satisfying to put them in their place.
I feel your pain, except I'm a noob myself :/ So I feel pretty discouraged by those guys. (and I can't kill them, because nonsense spoting as they may be, an infant would wreck me in HoN)
The whole MOBA genre grabs my interest, only to smack it back to oblivion with horrible community

People play with mute-all off in COD? What's wrong with you people? It's not like you actually need to speak with anyone.
But, how do you insult the friends you're playing with if you mute them? Does... not... compute.
Private voice channel, bro. Keeps out the rabble.

What you need is a group of friends to play with and time to practice. I've been playing ever since the closed beta started (in 2010 I believe) and I was absolutely TERRIBLE at the game. I even managed to clock 40 APM one game, which now I have no idea how I could have gotten.

And if you're lucky like me, when you get better, you can find a clan which has ties to tournament players like AngryTestie, MilkFat, NoTail and Chu (!!!), play with them, against them, and basically learn a truckload of tricks to keep you above the rabble.

Go kill the guy spamming your speakers, repeatedly. Like, single him out. If he's going to be an asshole, make sure he knows you're better than him. Nothing more would piss him off, I'm sure. :)

Then mute him. Or mute him while you do it. He'll leave eventually. :)

(for a more serious answer, go see the Extra Credits video about this, it's pretty good.)

Well yeah, that's just polite. But it's still not playing while muting everyone. Plus I think we'd all get banned if we did it on public.

I have the whole game's voice channel muted whenever I play, and I have a skype call up with friends if I happen to be playing with a buddy.

Ye, I've gotten that a few times before in LoL, not a lot of times, but a few, when it's not been my fault.

One time, in LoL, I was playing Solo Top as Volibear cause we had a jungle Xin Zhao.

(For those who do not play LoL or any DOTA related game, this means the Xin Zhao was in the forest and not directly in any lane, but killing neutral mobs and getting buffs to then jump out of the forest to help other lanes who need it.)

Anyways, the other team had the same champion, Xin Zhao, as a jungler, and he kept trash talking the other Xin Zhao player and eventually everyone on my team: "Lol, you are bad, next time you should try out my build instead, might make you good at the game." And such.

In the end though, we started killing him when he tried to gank us and we won the game, and then he started talking shit about his team calling them failures and that they should go and un-install the game. He was not the best player on their team, he kept trash talking, while he was the worst.
As a jungler he had the most deaths, least kills and least assists, and as the other team confirmed in after game chat, he kept hogging the buffs and didn't give any of the buffs to the other people on his team to help them out.

Though for me, this was a rare case. Most games I never meet trash talkers, sure I've met more then this guy, but he was extreme.

Ignore them, and move on. ;)

What do you play on? We 360 it up, so it's easier to use the private party chat set-up they've got going.

...why are you playing Left 4 Dead with random people online?

Isn't the whole point to find and/or play with three chums to go blast zombies with?

People you know you will get along with?

Play with friends and use Party Chat, OP. Joining a game full of randoms and leaving your headset on an open channel is just asking for the kind of bullsh*t you were on the receiving end of.

I kind got that in a World of tank game by a KV-1 on the other team. I was also in a KV-1 and near the end of the game I beat him in a 1v1 fight. I was using the 85 mm gun which has good penetration and rate of fire considering I have a 90% efficiency crew which is good since you either start with a 50% or 75% crew unless you use Gold(real money currency). Anyway I destroyed him because I aimed for weak spots and he didn't told me to fuck myself and called me a coward while I waited for our scout to light up the Stug on the map so myself and arty could kill him. I had around 150hp left which meant he could 1 shot me.

Anyway I won by hitting the Stug in the ammo rack for an instant kill.

I play a fair bit of World of Tanks, and from experience most players seen to have "Lol n00b fag team" on some sort of macro the instant they die. Usually by trying to rush the enemy base by themselves in a scout tank...

...so yeah, I've noticed that smacktalk is inversely proportional to skill in most games.

Know where I'd go?

"Hey Fat-Man! got a medpack back behind this shed for ya!"
*Silence, followed by gunfire*
*More gunfire, L4D chars have that much health...*
"Aaand Done. Clearlyy, I am better, as I am still standing, and it appears you got murdered by a hoard of zombies... Who learned how to use guns." (Imagine this in a badly faked Russian accent and evil laughter near the end.)

When it comes to online games, Friends are where it's at. I would have called the vote on him, if I was there because nobody deserves that shit. I sometimes bite back over VOIP because I have someone to back me silently. (Saying no to votes, ETC.) But I don't do it like an aberrant 6 year old playing with mother dearest's credit card.

Sadly, for some reason, people would rather let someone suffer constant abuse than be inconvenienced and have a possibility of losing just because they's have Bill or one of those other 4 retards turn into a bot for a moment until someone joined in. It's pretty fucked up when our priorities are shifted to not help someone on our own team so we can win.

I don't like the idea that you earn the right to smack-talk with skill. Ideally you should be using that time to throw constructive criticism at your opponent. By all means sneak in passive-aggressive jabs but if you're smack-talk isn't helping them improve you're not using your skills right.

I hear that a lot, but I've never once been insulted on CoD. In fact, once in a blue moon do I even see someone (hear someone?) using a microphone. Am I just super-lucky?
What console are you using? As I understand it, it's mostly the X-box community. They can afford a subscription, and the Elite comes with a headset. They feel entitled because they're pay to play.
OT: I find being insulted kind of entertaining. ESPECIALLY when the player is worse than me. I don't play anything that uses headsets, so I get to imagine them whining in that pubescent voice with the cracking voice. You know the one.

I avoid multiplayer like it has a large dose of genital warts.

The sad thing to say is a lot of games are now tacking on MP to their games so I know it's only a matter of time until I no longer buy any more games.

It's a problem in all games where you're heavily reliant on your allies. It sucks but there're always more socially dysfunctional idiots out there whose main goal in life is to call everyone else out on their errors, real or percieved.

The only thing you can do is get good at the game, one of the nice things about ranked in LoL is that the higher you go the more the idiots get cut out. I can deal with someone having a go at me for a mistake I made, but the stupidity of low level players really makes my head hurt.

Hence the reason why I never have, and never will, play CoD online. At my work we have a guy who actually thinks quickscoping is a valuable life skill. I've heard him complaining about having his image (gamertag?) removed after he intentionally designed it to look like a vagina. He's every bit the useless, entitled little twat you'd expect.

This is why I refuse to multiplayer with anyone that isn't within smacking distance.
I think this is the real problem, the freedom from all consequence. I am a big guy (6'2", 250 lbs). I'm not violent because I don't have to be. I doubt there are many people who would say anything to my face, especially not a skinny, acne-riddled twelve-year-old like I'm picturing. If they did I can only hope it would go down like this (very NSFW)

Because the game is several years old and most of my friends don't play it anymore. The one friend who was on it was not in a joinable game.

I don't like it. I'm just saying if someone does want to talk shit, they should be in a position to talk it, i.e. be the best.

Yeah, but see, that was what HE decided to do. Aping him would make me the bad guy.

I'm willing to bet that the other players were his friends or something, from your description of him he doesn't sound like the type who has the balls to call others out in front of strangers.
I'm pretty sure this was the situation. The other two guys on the team came out in support of him. Can't imagine they weren't buddies. As for balls, check my YouTube link for a thorough explanation by Mr Bullet-Tooth Tony himself, who says it far better than I ever could.
