I wouldn't let people like that ruin your fun. If you see someone like that, just ignore them or quit the server straight away and play with other people. When you're badass enough to show that person how to truly rock, find them again and run circles around them leading the team while they choke on a Smoker.

I hear that a lot, but I've never once been insulted on CoD. In fact, once in a blue moon do I even see someone (hear someone?) using a microphone. Am I just super-lucky?
Somewhat. From my experience, Im a middle of the road kind of player, not the best, but not the worse, so im usually missed by damn near anyone when insults start flying. I think the insults typically go towards either players that are new to the game (obviously), or players that are constantly killing the insulter.

I am in the Military and I hardly ever have the internet, so I mostly play RPGs if and when I get to game, but I do enjoy online shooters... problem is I am not as good as the motherf***ing goddamn, jobless, tax absorbing, lazy c**ts who all they do in life is play CoD and BF3, so of course they are better than me... And I have the privaligde of not only paying my taxes to fund their gaming, but I get the abuse for it too!

I tell you what though, I'd bet every last penny I own that they wouldn't dare say what they say to me to my face...

Luckily however I am a calm person, and I am always the better man to back down first and play something else!

I'm not in the Military (wouldn't take me) and i bet none of them would say it to my face ether. something about being with in smacking distance tends to shut people up, that, and people like that are cowards anyway.

anyway OP, mute is your friend for all such human waste

League of Legends is the biggest offender I've experienced, but I hear HoN is even worse.
I remember when playing LoL I had to leave right at the beginning of the day to help with some sudden work, Once I got back I was lv 1 and I was against lv 10 bots, so I went to the top lane were a guy was playing the drunk dwarf, I died once nearly killing a bot because he decided to run away form the bot while he still had over 50% health, and another time to a turret he decided to not attack even though we had minions no enemies and the turret was nearly dead. He kept claiming I was a noob and I was kill stealing for finishing of foes he was running away form.

On other news I was playing dragon ball raging blast 2 online and for once found a match were a guy started smack talking me non stop ON THE CHARACTER SELECTION SCREEN. In the first match he picked a character who has the most over powered move in the game and was able to beat me using a really cheap tactic. So in the second match I picked my good characters and used their teleport abilities to stop him from using his cheap tactic and owned all his 5 characters using just 2(I use my worse characters first), this went on for 5 more matches and HE KEPT SMACK TALKING ME, so I decided to quiet saying 'if I suck so much, and I was able to own you how much to you suck?'.

Even though I don't do it normally, I'm a great troll. On the rare occasion someone starts carrying on like this I just activate troll mode and sure enough they eventually take it to far and get themselves kicked or banned. At the very least you should have laughed at him for taking what essentially boils down to a kids toy so seriously.

While I do agree that 90% of trashtalkers wouldn't say what they do in person to anyone... The "being better than me means you're on welfare" bit is pushing it. You can have a life and be good at video games, it's possible.

Wait.

If someone is talking smack that he can't back up, that only gives me a reason to actually reply. It's so shameful for them.

There's a quick and easy solution to this, mute them.
1: Does not solve the problem described.
2: It's just tolerating and accepting behaviour that should be called out.
3: Why should a player cripple his ability to act as a team just because of one asshat?
1. If nobody talks back, how does the harasser get satisfaction?
2. Tolerating? Accepting? You're cutting the line those people are pulling.
3. If there is one asshat that doesn't cut the chatter on his mic then the team is already compromised.

Ah, the online trash-talker, the scum of online play. They are usually not good at all, but think they are, this delusion fuels their over-inflated egos and drives them to trash talk anyone and everyone. All you can do is leave the server, mute them and/or add them to your block list.

Trash talkers tend to be low-middle level players as the better players usually just get on with it or leave. This usually can be used to combat them, if one has the energy and wit to do so. I had one tool in BF3 think he was hot shit because he was corner camping on Operation 925 with a Saiga killing then T-bagging my group after every single kill. He lost every game he played against us because we PTFO hard, yet he thought he 'beat' us because we 'won by points' (it was Conquest Domination, "winning by points" is the entire purpose). When I brought this up, he decided to brag about his K/D, (which according to Battlelog, is 1.5. Mine is over 2.) and when questioned, he said W/L didn't matter (in an objective based game). Trash-talkers are so much better when they own themselves for you.

You see this in TF2 sometimes. Generally I notice that the person complaining is our team's 3rd spy or sniper.

Yeah, I had a terrible time playing Left 4 Dead online.

Lotta assholes there. I just stopped altogether.
It is totally not fair for those morons to ruin the game for us, but that's life. And online multiplayer will not be a truly pleasant experience until scum like that grow the hell up.

You see, I only smack talk (or smack sing) when I'm winning. Solves that problem. The mute button generally solves the rest and if it doesn't I usually just exit and start up another game, no biggie.

To go along with that clip, here's a public service announcement made by one Dr. Perry Cox:

Yeah, I don't typically do much multi-player gaming. On the off-chance that I do something in WoW with people I don't know, I usually just stay quiet and power my way through whatever it is while everyone else goes off on the flame wagon. It's just not worth it to be so hateful and spiteful. It doesn't achieve anything more than making you look like a tosser and pissing off the people you're hounding. Of course, to some people that's the entire point...

Fair one mate... I will admit I was exaggerating, and I don't honestly beleive that everyone who is good at games is unemployed! :p I'm air force, and half the damn trainee pilots are awesome at CoD due to the ammounts of practice they get on bad weather days, linked with their natural aptitude...

However they also won't berate someone online for not being as good as them... you can be good at games and not be a dick about it! I was pretty good at Ace Combat online a while back, when I had more time, but I didn't ever shout down my team mates for being shot down, I just made more of an effort to be their wing men... I imagine a lot of people in our community in here would do the same...

But appologies for the previous post... The tone was hard to pick out, and I definitely was just exaggerating rather than actually generalising...!

One thing that pisses me off in particular is people in World of Warcraft who are fully kitted out in level 85 heroic PvE gear and know the dungeons so well that they could do it blind, giving shit to people(me) for not doing as much DPS as them or for not knowing all the boss mechanics or whatever.

What do you play on? We 360 it up, so it's easier to use the private party chat set-up they've got going.
Well PC, obviously. I'm using skype.

I don't know precisely how it works on the PC versions of L4D, but this is my basic response any time someone brings up a horrible multiplayer community.

Do you know what I do any time someone opens their mouth in a multiplayer match? I mute them. Because the odds of them having anything helpful or constructive to say are astronomically small, and that way I'm spared the pain of listening to their garbage.

What boggles my mind is how often people complain about stupid online players when there's no reason for them to listen to their shit.

I once had some french guy on my team screaming at me over the comms on BF3, despite having a *much* lower score than me, because he didn't like my tactics.

It was hilarious to listen to.

'FUCK YOU WAYSIDE!! FUCKING NOOB! FUCKING MACHINE GUN NOOB! FUCK YOU FUCKING WAYSIDE NOOB!'

Still makes me smile just thinking about it.

Simple truth
The majority of truly good gamers in the main do not abuse other players (always an exception tho)
The biggest bunch of smack talking idiots are those who litter the middle brackets and cover up the their own lack of skill at the game by harassing others.
