Or it could just be that the hamsters powering the Sony servers all died. There's that, too.
This group of hackers has never given us reason NOT to take their word for it.
And I'm actually not being sarcastic.

On the other hand, Sony has given us plenty reason to think that they can't keep their shit together. That leap year fiasco (finally looked it up) WAS only a year ago. I guess we're due for their next great screwup.
They are a group of hackers playing bully on the internet doing extremely illegal things. Nobody's private information is safe to them. Why should we EVER take their word for it?
Because if it was anonymous (especially) they would've been gloating about it before anything even happened.
I dont buy it. Thats not good enough for me. Anon is made up of random people with their own ideals and no system of command. Any single agent could have taken it apon themselves to do the dirty deed at any time.
One person could shut down the entire network for two days?

That's what you get when you run a network that no one pays to access.

The three people Sony pays to maintain it must be working around the clock to get it back up by the weekend, maybe.

:D
I'm guessing you have an X360
And also someone who pays for his internet twice over. ^_-

Event happens, Internet invents facts. For once, can we not do that? Sony isn't trying to use Anonymous as a scapegoat (at least, not yet anyway). Even then, Anonymous isn't the only group capable of a DDoS attack. I don't recall Sony mentioning Anonymous in the other article.

If we're still going with the inventing facts route, Sony drowns puppies for Satanic rituals now.
They also don't like bacon. The monsters.

No, but it would be easy enough for someone in Anon to gather enough people to do such a thing because of the varying beliefs they have.

Still think everyone involved with Anon should be tossed in jail for a long, long time. Regardless if what they are doing is 'morally' right, it's still vigilantism and veeeeery illegal.

I don't really care about those damn groups. Can't they find all those bastards and jail them, or, better yet, fine? And use that money to secure another exclusive for PS3?
I've always hated hackers. Now I see I was right to do so.

I have to say, this will likely see me in more flames in Joan of Arc, but If this is Anon... I kinda like their style here. Set up a blockade to prevent people from accessing their precious PSN. When people arn't willing to boycott Sony by choice, Lets force them. If this happens repeatedly, or stays down for weeks or months at a time, How long do you think it will take for the PSN community to dwindle and rather then wait and pray, they find another source for gaming online from a 360 or PC. If the PSN dies, do you really thing Sony would bother making a PS4 if this is what they'll have to deal with? Generations from now, Kids could be saying Whats a Playstation? much like the uniformed kids of today say Whats an Atari or Sega?

All these posts and news about "Anonymous" doing something. It's too much of a hydra to say whether 'they' did anything or not.

90% of Anonymous may have not done anything, including the 'official' news site, then the other 10 might be totally responsible.

Hell this might be due to people who sometimes consider themselves part of Anon and sometimes not. It's impossible to say this was or was not performed by Anonymous.

Plus when it was 'them' there's a chance it was someone else and they're claiming credit for the lulz.

That would explain their apology after taking the PSN down the first time.

OH WAIT NO IT DOESN'T!

Forcing people to not use Sony products even if they want to is despicable. I mean, all this nonsense about fighting for the rights of the customer and you're talking about forcing the PSN away from them? Just think about that for me.

The group that's calling themselves AnonOps are the splinter. Anon has no formal organization or goals. I'm really sick of "Anon" putting out statements saying they didn't do stuff. It's ridiculous.
My first thought on reading about a news site and a Facebook page was pretty much that. I don't know why people don't get it, but Anonymous isn't a coordinated or organized group, they're barely a group at all, it's pretty much just shorthand for everyone that posts on *chan sites anonymously.

Yeah that was just a goofy troll-attempt, I actually have both (PS3/360) and enjoy both, and while I do honestly find XBL to be superior to PSN, that's not really the point here. ;)

I am however quite interested to see how Sony handles this - rip on M$ for charging for Live all you like; the one time it went down for a short while (Christmas 3 years ago, iirc) they gave everyone a free arcade game (a $10 value).

Will Sony be so generous/apologetic? I wonder.

We all should be thankful for what we have and when stuff like this happens, just take a break, its not the end of the world. We are all pissed off because when we get something like psn for free, after awhile we automatically think they have to give it to us.

Indeed, there is talk of disgruntled employees being laid off and going out with a bang. Unlike GROUPS such as Anonymous, an inside job needs only one person to cause total chaos.

Bradley Manning, anyone?

As I said there are dozens of likely explanations. Maybe Anonymous compromised the Network when they did what the did a few weeks back and Sony shut it down themselves whilst they reverse the damage.

The less Sony say then the less likely it is that by Saturday everything will be peaches and cream again.

This remarkable lack of communication means that either they don't have a clue themselves what is going on or they don't want anyone outside of the corporation to know what is going on. If it is the latter than it is either extremely embarrassing for them or they feel that explaining what is going on could compromise their efforts to run the Network safely and securely.
