While i do appreciate Anonymous fighting for the freedom the internet provides i really think it's gotten out of hand...

As has been mentioned before in this thread they're way too good at what they do and due to the nature of that group there's not really any stopping them either unless they want to... and they're clearly never gonna want to stop.

Please, people, for the love of all that is good, try to understand. Anonymous is not a group. It's not an organization. It's not a bunch of hackers all banded together to accomplish a goal. Anonymous is a Mask.

The reason they seem so unfocused and so hard to catch, and the reason why sometimes they do great justice and other times they are just douchebags and criminals, is because they are not united. Anonymous is exactly like the Guy Fawkes mask it so often dons. You pick it up, you put it on, and now anything you do is put on the tab of the mask, not you.

Think of it as in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, when you reach the top of the thieves guild, you get the Gray Fox mask, and when you wear it, you have a 10,000 gold bounty and can do whatever you want, but when you take it off, you are you and nobody is any the wiser.

In all honesty, I think the FBI should just hire Anonymous.
You can't hire an idea. Anon aren't all hackers. Anon is a collection of like-minded people tied solely around an ideology. Even then its loosely based. Some are hackers, many are not.
I know that. Doesn't mean they couldn't come to an agreement with the part of Anonymous that is hacker.

Dont this people have anything better to do? If they used all that time and energy on legal things they could make lots of money.

wow anonymous really needs to be taken out there too dangerous and too good at what they do
Agreed. 'Anonymous' are really just criminals who use ID theft to fund their crimes. Calling themselves 'heroes' is insulting to anybody who works for a living.
What crimes, pray tell? Protesting against Scientology? Defending Wikileaks? Revealing a sham of a security company that is taking peoples private information and selling it to the FBI? What?
If revealing what the company was doing was all they did it wouldn't be bad but stealing the guys Identity. Defending Wikileaks is one thing but taking down sites like Pay Pal is illegal.
So is stealing people's personal infomation.

Unless The Escapist is being admin'd by moonlighting members of this testament to Planned Parenthood, may I humbly request that you stop posting stories about these children? It seems like we are seeing weekly updates on what 4year old Chan is up to, and all it seems to be doing is legitimizing their actions. Anonymous is neither news, nor interesting, nor relevant to the internet. Unless we make them.

I am sure the security firm's people have a plan of action that will surely work against these vile hoodlums.

Fixed^

If these fools are the guys protecting the government from hackers than the government desperately need new protectors. I think it's about time for these data-mining cretins to get out of the game.

Isn't the whole point of this news story the fact that they can't find Anon? Or the Anon who are hacking? =P

Besides, this isn't an example of hacking, honestly. Aside from the entry, its mostly just social engineering.

So, I have a question - if Anonymous is this amorphous blob with no organization...who decides what to put in the open letter?
It's pretty easy, whoever feels like writing it. Since anonymous has no structure, it just adheres to some sort of 'hive mind' if you will. The ideals of anonymous are usually laid out before the campaign even starts, usually a person will set it into motion via a picture that'll get passed around, and people will jump on board with the plan, assuming the plan is worthy.. i.e. /b/ is not your personal army.

Think of it as a collective where ideas get passed around, if an idea that the majority can get on board is passed around, everyone will kinda adopt it and it will be put into action.

How the hell did they get that guys Social Security number? And come to think of it, what are you supposed to do once your social security number has been compromised?

And didn't the Pirate Bay get taken down?
They got his SSN probably by doing a skip trace after they got enough information. It's a technique debt collectors use to follow where you go and to see what you own. And if a SSN is compromised, the IRS can issue you a new number (I think it's the IRS anyways). Also, no, TPB is still very much up.

There is no point in what they are doing since no one is going to listen to a 'silly little group on the internet'.

Agreed, and while I dont care for their actions, and in no way support them, I have to applaud them.
I can't agree with the manner in which the group goes about some of it's 'retaliations'; but then again, an anonymous group being able to account for the actions of it's anonymous members is a bit of a challenge.

Overall though, I'm not opposed to what they are doing.

Judging by the amount of responses to this thread, and how much people are enjoying it and reading it, I'd say it's both News AND Interesting. If you don't like it, stop reading it.

Why would they have to find them? All they need to do is get the word out. The right guys will hear it through the channels.
It's all hypothetical though, fairly sure most of them wouldn't do it anyway.

I respect the skill of this, THIS is real hacking.

DDOS attacks are not hacking, but this, this is something I can respect the execution of.
