It's quite sad really that it's probably not going to happen. The ruckus caused by HTTP being globally down - even for an hour or so - would be hilarious.

Captcha: "Mind the gap". I can swear it's getting sentient.

I am seriously doubting the authenticity of this threat. Seeing as how ANYONE can claim to be anonymous, it doesn't mean the entire collective is for shutting THEMSELVES down. Why in the hell would you attempt to shut down the collective's ability to communicate with one another? How would they know when Operation Blackout is over if there is no set date?

Not only that, but anonymous usually has a habit of claiming credit for an attack *after they've already done it.*
They can shut down HTTP internet. They'll still be able to use IRC to communicate

If they really want to hurt bankers that DEFINITELY shouldn't be doing this on a weekend. Bank's business would be most harmed during... well during banker's hours.

While I want to see if they could pull this off, I think that stopping the flow of information for those who just don't know as much about the internet as you is a gross misuse of that knowledge and completely goes against your own principles of free information (allowing only those who have the knowledge access it).

Anon, if you as a collective do this, you lose a lot of respect from me.

... Whatever, thanks for letting us know in advance I guess

Just get it out of your system, OK? I don't think that hitting everyone with a protest is a good idea but then again, Anonymous is one of those groups that tends to isolate itself and make decisions in a vacuum.

I know, its all very cool and cyberpunk, which is why i'm not that pissed off. In fact i kinda want to see if you can do it. But its only really going to hurt the average user, militaries will have IP backups and hard lines as will governments. And the average user will think you're attacking them. Its really fucking stupid.

So just like they took down facebook? And created their own country? and ended the tyranny of high gas prices?

THE END IS NIGH!!! Quick everyone grab all the porn and ponies you can and meet me in the vault!

Also, im generally interested to see how DAR GERVAMENT respond to this if it actually works. Will they have a new found respect for creative people on the internet or will they just use it to launch a man hunt on a loosely tied group of people to boost their own numbers... don't answer that.

Seriously though the idea that this is so easily possible is worrying... can we back up the internet?

Funny, I read something when SOPA was still kicking about about anonymous doing exactly this. And they didn't do it. So I'm calling BS on this.
I was just thinking "haven't i seen this already?

It was done before.
Some grad student want to see how wide spread his virus can be, though he meant no harm. However, there is a bug in his virus on how it reproduce, needless to say he cog up half of the internet servers(DNS).
I only remember his exploit buffer overflow on a function of the server called finger. Basically instead pass in an address he pass in a string of machine code, which overflow the program stack and overwrite the return address to his choosing.
It was pretty famous I'm sure someone know much more about this.

So basically, put Steam in offline mode when I go to bed tomorrow.

I just hope this doesn't affect Steam or any of my precious online games D:

Oh well, better search something to do over the weekend, if that fails, I can set Steam to offline and play lots of Skyrim over the weekend.
