Rather than "sinking to the same level as Anne Diamond" by calling people names on the internet, Gamers' Voice called on gamers to respond "eloquently and intellectually."
He's in luck, the current civil war between Anon and GirlVinyl over Encyclopedia Dramatica shutting down currently has the attention of most internet trolls concentrated elsewhere.

Otherwise I'd just laugh at his high expectations of the greater internet community.

And here i thought the British were actually smarter then us Americans.

This is the same paper that said if you type "Adele" into Google, the first 9 sites you get are offering pirated copies.

I'd advise trying that.

Equally

While America has it's hate TV, we have a whole host of hate papers. Globally, they're seen as England's shame.
I guess this just proves all humans are partially moronic
As I'm sure all the English people here would say, we're just amazed that other countries don't realise that they're just printing crap to fill pages. We realised this ages ago.

btw is "The Wright Stuff" the equivalent of FOX in the land of fish and chips?
We don't have an equivalent of that piece of shit. The Wright Stuff is like those women's talk shows, designed for stay-at-home housewives, though it's not just aimed at women. It's usually not so biased, but it always picks out "hot topics" rather than interesting or intellectually pleasing stories, so in that sense, it's a lot like FOX.

The Wright Stuff ranks just above The Jeremy Kyle Show(Americans: Jerry Springer) for tasteless hatred TV.

And only just.
Do they ever figure out who's the baby's Daddy before the closing credits roll?

Just face it!
This industry is evil, these games are all evil and don't forget WE are all evil, too.

If every like 5th guy who bought CoD or Halo actually turns into a killer we would be pretty fucked...

"We don't really need reports to tell us [that violent video games cause anti social behavior] do we?" she asked. "Common sense tells you if you expose a child to violent imagery and a lot of it for many hours a day for many years on end, it's going to have an effect."
Seems like they're ignoring the fact that young children should not be playing games that are not rated for their age group (i.e. Mature, 18+, ect). Any study referenced, based off of this statement, is obvious, this is why there are ratings in place today. Because it is true, children are more susceptible to media and the effects of viewing violence will have an effect on them, due to their undeveloped brains.

Now if this person had actually chosen to reference some sort of articles that studied the effects on the average, stable-minded adult, any claims would have been much more valid. The fact that they also failed to use the other forms of media (TV, Movies, Music) as examples, shows a lot of ignorance. A main one being the News in TV, children can watch that freely, and there is quite a lot of violence in it. The fact that the show aired the clip from the "M" rated game on daytime television is proof that violence exists in News Media. The News Media needs to examine itself, making sure it is not simply ignoring its own short comings when it comes to exposing people to violence, before they choose one market to highlight when looking at this kind of thing.

Interesting, and what's ironic is that this is just going to get worse because with the upcoming "Call Of Juarez" game they will actually be able to make some sensible arguements in tying games to gang violence because by all reports that whole game is going to be a giant gang propaganda piece, by putting players in the role of drug cartel members involved in the real gang wars on the border, fighting law enforcement, and glorifying the lifestyle.

See, right now the anti-gaming messages are ridiculous, gaming simply being the current boogieman. The people making these arguements don't even know enough about gaming to make a good show out of it. See, if you had to face *ME* on the other side of this, even if I was just after ratings, I'd be dragging up things like the old game "Ethnic Cleansing" (look it up) which includes contact information to get in touch with and presumably join groups like the KKK and Aryan Brotherhood IRL. I interspace fringe things like that with the big name games I could probably make a more compelling arguement, even if it was still wrong. Of course right now "Call Of Juarez: The Cartel" or whatever they decide to call it is pretty much going to activate "god mode" for media anti-gaming rampages.

In the end I think people just need to come to grips with the simple fact that children are not "little adults" and are not fully formed intellecually or emotionally. They are very differant from fully formed people, and driven by a lot of inherant instincts, which includes a lot of violent, socio-pathic, and self-interested behavior. This is why socializing children is such a big deal, and part of parenting. All of these kids shows that teach the moral lesson of "sharing is a good thing" and such exist for a reason.

Your kids aren't violent because they played violent video games, they are violent because they are kids. Video games are just the current entertainment medium of choice, and no more responsible for developmental human nature than any of the other things people have tried to use as boogiemen over the years.

In cases like this shooting, the guys were violent because they were gang members and involved in organized crime. Gangs and organized crime didn't come into being because of video games or the modern media. Indeed I'd argue that we have it pretty good compared to the old days, when gangs took over entire cities. I think we just THINK there is more violence today than in the past because of instant information, and the simple fact that towns can't bury their sordid histories like used to happen. We're simply more aware of what is going on, and that awareness makes things seem a lot differant than they were.

People tend to forget about the formation of the FBI and what the country was like beforehand, and WHY it made Hoover a hero for a long time (even if he's looked down on nowadays). Guys like Al Capone were so far in the past that it just seems unreal to people today, and the same can be said of some of the rampages Biker gangs have gone on decades ago when they simply had the numbers and the firepower than the authorities couldn't put out enough force to really stop them. Of course by the same token it can be argued that there is also a truce of sorts between some of the largest bike clubs and the goverment. Some of the larger and better organized and more violent clubs have enough membership and firepower that getting rid of them would probably require the national guard (of course this is a whole differant discussion, there have been shows on TV talking about the situation with groups like the Mongols and the Outlaws, and so on).

At any rate, while a lot of people hate the song, I think Paper Lace produced one of the best reminders ever in the form of a song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fPK-JgwYjw

One of the better videos to illustrate it too. Yes, they got him on tax charges, but he ruled the city through violence, and did NOT go down easily.

Some time think about things like that, and what a grip he had on the city, and how much violence, lawlessness, and crime there was through the entire nation, with the police forces being a shadow of what they are now. Then try and say that things are worse now and that obviously all of this comes from video games. "OMG an innocent bystander got gunned down by gang bangers", well at least the gang bangers went to jail. There was a time when the gangsters would have just gone to have a nice lunch after such a mistake and cursed about their luck, because nobody would have had the guts to cross them... even the police.

Just what we need it a joke news program pulling something like this. It's sad that they linked a tragic crime like that to video games where there's nothing that links them.

Good on Gamers' Voice for standing up for us and presenting it in an intelligent way.

You may knock it, but part of my job involves visiting young mothers (with CP kids) in their homes, and every morning, every household, it's this garbage they watch. And I suspect other similar demographics do the same. It has an audience, and it doesn't do our hobby any good (how many mothers now won't buy their child a console for christmas...)

On the other hand, 5ive just bought the rights to BigBrother...

[EDIT]
Isn't there a Complaints Body we can complain to, individually en masse? Does anyone know how to do it online? I would be grateful for a linky

So when did Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Tipper Gore become the "Faces of Fox news"? I ask this because they're some the main people here in America against violence in video games. Yeah, this isn't a "right wing crackpot" thing, it's a bipartisan effort to use cheap scare tactics to weasel their ways into easy votes, like claiming to be "tough on drugs" or "anti-crime".
Thank you. It's mostly these Democratic lawmakers who are anti-game. There are probably Republican ones (I can't think of them right now), but they aren't the poster children.

Also, these are adult games not meant for children! If parents think this is inappropiate, maybe they shouldn't be buying them for their kids. Oh, and I'm 19-years-old and been playing violent games for years and real-world violence freaks me out. If I saw someone getting beat on the street I'd be disturbed. Just because I can watch pixels fight doesn't mean I enjoy watching real people get hurt.
