While she may have put her foot in her mouth several times and said somethings that make the inner prepubescence nerd rage but she in no way shape or form should be attacked as she has been.

I am not familiar with her solo works but if she did work for DA:O, one of my favorite games of all time (partialy because of the plot) then i will defend her despite being one those forever alone gamers who wants her job like the desert pleas for rain.

While it may not be the best idea to put someone who does not like games in a writing position within a company like Bioware, it is a good idea to have someone like her as a consultant or Q&A tester.

she is more likely to ask questions like 'why are the dwarves constantly running smog producing machines when they live in a poorly ventilated underground cavern?' or 'why does dexterity effect bow damage? wouldn't that be determined by the quality of the bow and upper-body strength of the archer?' than the vast majority of gamers who would just dismiss it like most fan ignore/accept tropes of their genre.

Screw that, Flynn should get a medal for that post. I applaud him for standing up for a co-worker. The customer is NOT always right, and Bioware doesn't need that guy's business.
THIS situation is the reason why professionalism exists. If a customer is being a jerk then you may call the cops, you may refuse them service, and you may ban them from the establishment but you NEVER swear at them.

using profanity is a big enough taboo on its own in the business world, but dropping the f-bomb on a customer, no mater how much they earned it, is just grounds for immediate termination.

If you ever attended business school, that line of thought about the customer NOT being always right is just flat out WRONG. Keep in mind that Bioware is still a legitimate business entity, no matter how bitchy the customers might get, telling your market share to "fuck off" shows poor PR, degrades company image, and shows a great lack of professionalism.

Defending someone is not an excuse to disregard professionalism in handling a matter like this. That guy needs to remember that he's still representing the company with his statements. Instead of giving him a medal, Bioware should show him to the unemployment line instead.
I'm not going to argue anything about being proper since I never really was much for "proper," but to me people have gotten far too high a feeling of entitlement. Just for a little while I'd love it if people would stop feeling like they deserve to say whatever they want, without considering how rude or hurtful it is (actually scratch that, they know exactly how rude and hurtful it is). Proper or not, I'm all for putting someone in their place when they cross the line. Just my thoughts.

Bioware games have always been a mix of conversations (i.e. Japanese visual novels) and action elements (FPS in Mass Effect, or RTS like Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age). So she prefers the former over the latter, is a far cry of disliking games in general, which is false.

People really need to stop using that line that she doesn't like games - she does. She just doesn't possess the manual dexterity needed for action heavy games. There's a difference.

I think there is a big difference between telling your market share to "f*** off" and telling one entitled prick to "f*** off". I'm sick of people feeling that they can give someone crap just because they're a customer; I make it a point of telling off fellow customers in a store when they're out of line and the employee won't tell them off.

Business school is not out to train idiots who live solely by a single maxim. You take the phrase far too literally to be business graduate.

"The phrase ?The customer is always right? was originally coined by Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridge?s department store in London in 1909, and is typically used by businesses to:

1. Convince customers that they will get good service at this company

2. Convince employees to give customers good service"

http://positivesharing.com/2006/07/why-the-customer-is-always-right-results-in-bad-customer-service/

A customer service relationship, like any relationship, requires trust and respect from both parties. Bioware doesn't need to court a cross-section of abusive customers, who out go of their way to commit defamation in a calculated manner. Period.

Well, why don't you try to put them in their place if you're all up for it?

Thing is, Flynn is a high ranking official in Bioware. He could've just defended her in other ways without taking company image with him. Telling them to "fuck off" was just downright rude for a company representative, whether those people do deserve it or not.

I thought we all wanted more story and less combat orientated games? I thought we wanted more control. The people behind those comments aren't the fans of old.

I'm not ashamed about my hobby, but every group has that set of morons that you look at and facepalm. They're stupid and we shouldn't give them any more attention or they might actually believe they're worth more than what sits in the gutter.

I bet they all were playing The Old Republic while making those accusations. >.>

The "fuck off" was just one example. He said many more to much more people. It's in twitter, go check it out. And that doesn't change the fact that they seriously need to hire a better PR if Flynn (An official from Bioware) is willing to curse willy-nilly, even if that entitled guy deserved it or not, Flynn is still taking company image. Thing is, he could've stated things better, ignored them, or just hired people who could address them better if he couldn't.

If you want to tell off those entitled pricks, then be my guest. You're not holding Bioware's company image, unlike Flynn, so it should be alright for you.

You know you're right, allow me to go start my crusade and hunt down the people like this. I'll just put everything on hold to yell at people over the internet, because some random guy yelling at them will make them stop being jackasses. /endsarcasm
This person crossed the line, because people think there are no consequences. Like I said, there is a huge sense of entitlement going around and as long as nothing is done it will only get worse. If people don't want to be civilized, I see no reason to be civil towards them. This isn't an attack on the consumers, this is a man, (yes even high ranking members of companies are mortals like the rest of us) who had enough of an insolent little punk. And yes I am aware I sound angry throughout this, which is in no way aimed at you, I'm just extremely frustrated when people think they are entitled to do whatever they want with no consequences.

Yeah, well, I could have phrased that better. Since you seem to think I take it all too literally. And I'm still in college, I haven't even graduated yet.

Besides, priority in businesses is more on what shareholders want, and shareholders want return on their investment, and as far as I can see, cursing market shares through a public social networking site is not a good way to generate return, hell, if anything, it reduces potential return. When potential buyers see that a person who's representing the company is cursing to their market shares, showing lack of professionalism, they're going to assume that the lack of professionalism is rampant in the company, and it will give off the feeling that they aren't that professional in their creation of their product.

And why would Bioware take them to court? If anything, this whole flame war between them good advertising for them and their games, especially with the near release of ME3.

Don't worry. I could see where you're going from. My point is that as a representative, he could've chosen better means to address the rampant flaming of the people. He could've just made a grown-up statement and moved on, he didn't need to sink to their level. Yeah, Flynn's mad, but he's still the grown up in all of this, he could've just let the Bioware fans handle the flamers. Let the hormone raging teenagers handle the hormone raging entitled teenagers.

I don't really go there that much as well. Just to confirm anything that the news had said, since I don't really trust most articles until I've checked out the issue myself.

Buy you know what? I actually think her "skip the combat" idea has its merits. My other half and I play a lot of games, and it's not something we'd consider using. But I'm not thinking about us. I'm thinking about his mum who, whilst she loves the stories, characters, mysteries and puzzle solving in games like Tomb Raider or Uncharted, doesn't have the manual dexterity to pull off all the running, jumping or shooting required to advance the plot, thanks to arthritis inher fingers. What exactly would be so inherrently wrong with having a game mode that meant she didn't have to rely on pixel perfect moves? Why shouldn't even more people be able to get enjoyment out of the medium of games?
I'm not quite sure how to feel about skipping combat sections, because I often play games like RPGs and the such for their stories. But when I really think about it, the combat sections are also part of the story that makes every run of every game, no matter how linear or open, unique in their own respect to the individual playing the game, whether canonical or non-canonical.

But also it's the fact that actually playing it is what distinguishes a game from a movie or a television show. If you wanted purely story, you can always flick on the tv, put in a movie or pick up a book and read it. Combat systems are the very core of what makes a game...well...a game. They aren't games if you simply sit there and watch them. And there is a game mode that means you don't have to rely on pixel perfect moves. Easy Mode exists for a reason.

I'm kind of on the fence about it, really. I can't say I'm for it, but I can't say I'm entirely against it because I'm guilty of occasionally wishing I could just move on with the plot without going through more combat. I feel like from a practical viewpoint it may have some merits, like allowing people like your other half's mom to go through games with ease and thoroughly enjoy them. But fundamentally, that removes everything that makes it a game and it's nothing more than a movie, which completely obliterates what makes the gaming unique as an interactive medium.

Still working on figuring out how to say what I'm thinking without it coming across like "she shouldn't be playing games because skipping combat isn't how playing a game is supposed to be done." Because that's rude and insensitive and it's not what I mean nor what I'm trying to say. I'll get back to you at a later date. .-.

The people hurling the sort of childish abuse that has been displayed are not Bioware's shareholders. Bioware has little incentive to court these people.

She wants to play video games, but she wants to skip the gameplay parts?
I don't get it. Why doesn't she just go read a book or watch a movie? She's clearly not a gamer.

While I think it was pretty stupid to attack her like that, I agree with everything that's said about her. But it should have been said in a more mature way.
