Christmas has nothing to do with Christianity, never did. The pagans made it an the Christans stole and renamed it. Now it's a commercial holiday celebrated by most people regardless of religion. People like getting gifts and spending money, why not celebrate it?
/thread

Not to mention it would've been impossible for Jesus to 've been born in winter

He was red because he held a position in the Catholic Church which wore red garments.

He was actually of Turkish origin.
Ahh, my mistake, you are both right. One of his origins is in modern day turkey and Sinterklaas in netherlands and belgium was a bishop robed in red, based heavily on Odin for the mythos.

Various incarnations seem to have existed over the centuries and have more origin stories than batman.

I'm an atheist and I celebrate Christmas because of the idea that it brings of togetherness, unity, and unconditional love for at least a day. AND THE PRESENTS!!
Pretty much this. Although, I'm also the only atheist in my family to so...

It's a Christian holiday. Regardless of what it was in the past, it currently is a Christian holiday (over-commercialized, definitely!) The thing that I don't get is why Atheists celebrate "Christ's mass" instead of say, the solstice or some other secular reason around the same time. Even Santa Claus is based off of the patron saint of Charity.
Because thinking of it as Christmas is the most wide-spread thought about the holiday in the Western world. In days gone by, most, if not all Europeans and North Americans of European descent were either Christian or Jewish. Obviously, the Jews celebrated (and continue to celebrate) Hanukkah, but as fro everyone else, it was Christmas. Eventually it just became tradition.

Christmas isn't a religious holiday, it's a celebration of commercialism and to a lesser extent the generosity of St Nick. Jesus isn't even relevent.

It's the season of giving.

Being partial to someone's religion only makes you look bad,
No matter what that religion just so happens to be.

It's a big ball of commercialized joy!

I buy things for no one, and I still get shit! People hatred of me grows every year, and I love every second of it!
What? People still get you presents when you pretty much ignore them? How does that work?
It's not as much "buying me presents" as it is "Cold-blooded murder and theft"
I should have known.

note how you refereed to it as x-mas, and everyone knows what you mean, that kind of says your right
Actually "X" is the first letter of the Greek word for "Christ". It's just an abbreviation, so proper pronunciation would be the same as the full name.

And yet they continue buying you stuff?
Nice work!

OT: I don't "celebrate" christmas. I just embrace it when it comes around.

Likewise, regardless of what it was in the past, it is no longer a strictly Christian holiday either.

Christmas was never really about Christ. It was a Pagan holiday, and when Luke and his posse invented The Bible, they knew people wouldn't want to give up Awesome Pagan Day, (it's actually called Saturnalia) so they changed Awesome Pagan Day to Christmas.

And yes, I am an Atheist, and yes, I celebrate Christmas.

I think Christmas is no longer just a religious holiday I believe in god but I know several atheists who celebrate X-mas and some of my other Christian friends do not think they should be celebrating if they do not believe in Christ but I believe it has gone past that to just a holiday to come together and show each other we care.
Christmas was stolen by the Christians.
The Holiday was originally Pagan and was celebrated by the Romans long before that crazy Carpenter was around.

You and your Christian friends shouldn't be telling people what they can and cannot be celebrating (which is ironic in a sense).

I am an atheist who has always celebrated Christmas. It's really just a day to get together and give each other presents and be together. Mostly presents though. Also as said by many others it was a pagan holiday at first.

Well it's not like it was originally a christian holiday to begin with.

At any rate, sure, I take part in the festivities. They make a convenient get together date after all, given most places of work have it off.

That said, it's nothing compared to new years; by contrast it's merely a stepping stone.

Romans, celts, and other assorted Pagans: Hey guys, we're having fun on our solstices!
Christans: NO U MUST CONVERT
R,C,P: ...But we loose our wild parties!
Christians: NO U MUST CONVERT PARTY IN TEH NAM OF GOD
R,C,P: ...Kay.

That's what Christmas is really about. It's a solstice celebration full of fun. Plus, A Christmas Story is on.
