What's the problem, just because I find the possibility of a celestial being highly unlikely doesn't mean I need to give up my presents! Plus it's just a nice time to meet with family and christmas lights are just so damn pretty.

Im raised catholic, but Atheists should celebrate X-mas.....without calling it christmas, without a star on the tree, and without everything else that has major religious affiliation. Atheists, no, EVERYONE, celebrates the basic meanings of christmas (or Annual Day of Gift Giving for you atheists) which is being generous and being with the ones you love and showing them how much you love them

It really is selfish how people want to spend time with family, give gifts and just be pleasant while not believing in supernatural beings.
This post is full of subtle win.

Just as everyone has stated, it is no longer about the "birth" of fictional character Jesus Christ, it has been revolutionized into a universal time of giving, taking, family togetherness, etc.

Seriously, growing up I have never seen Christmas as a religious holiday, I have always seen it as a time for families to get together and give presents. Simple as that.

I stopped calling it Christmas, actually. Xmas ("Ex-mas")has just come into the parlance around me. But celebrating the holiday is hardly a christian thing to do. It wasn't theirs before, it's still not theirs now. The celebration of a birth that happens months apart, that the celebrations might coincide with established celebrations for the old gods is a great religious practice for new religions, and hardly only a christian thing. But, the whole coming together, getting each other a gift, eating, and pissing each other off is still a great time, and we get off of work for it, so we may as well celebrate, eh?

I think we should have more days celebrating Zombies. I call for a Night of the Living Dead Day!
That actually happens. But it's not just NotLD, and it generally ends up being mostly a Romero fest. Which is not a bad thing at all.

Christmas: Non-secular celebration of commercialized greed.

Fight the greed! Consume a mass of food smaller than your head at the annual family gathering!

note how you refereed to it as x-mas, and everyone knows what you mean, that kind of says your right
Actually "X" is the first letter of the Greek word for "Christ". It's just an abbreviation, so proper pronunciation would be the same as the full name.
That's exactly what I was going to say. Χριστός

I though the reason would be obvious, some of us just like our family. That's what the day is about for us, we make breakfast, open gifts, talk some more, do some stuff, then go out to dinner.

Wow, possibly the fastest "/thread" I've ever witnessed. The second post got it right, Christmas wasn't a Christian holiday to begin with, it was pegan, and now it's just about commercialism and buying gifts. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. Hell, the Steam sales have already taken more of my money than I care to admit.

I only celebrate it because my family does. Typically I'll just take some duty-shifts for my friends on Christmas so they can be home with their families while I get to have a seriously easy day and make some good cash for that day.

I think Christmas is no longer just a religious holiday I believe in god but I know several atheists who celebrate X-mas and some of my other Christian friends do not think they should be celebrating if they do not believe in Christ but I believe it has gone past that to just a holiday to come together and show each other we care.
Christmas is pretty much a commercial holiday these days. If people are religious they are free to celebrate any religious aspects they see the holiday to have as well, but the only people who aren't going to celebrate it because it's a "Christian holiday" are people who are quite dedicated to another religion.

But to most people, Christmas is presents, family, and Santa Claus; not wise men, Jesus, and virgin mothers.

Christmas has nothing to do with Christianity, never did. The pagans made it an the Christans stole and renamed it. Now it's a commercial holiday celebrated by most people regardless of religion. People like getting gifts and spending money, why not celebrate it?
What he said.

I'm Atheist and I celebrate it so I don't upset my family, just like every other Holiday or Birthday. Nothing more, nothing less.

Christmas wasn't a Christian thing to begin with, it was just shanghaied like so much else has been. Now it's become a massive commercialized thing and is celebrated members of several different religions and beliefs. It's more of a feel-good time for Western civilization than anything else.

I like Christmas, nice to see the family. Not that I have a big family, usually just 3-5 people...

So you don't enjoy it? Not even a little bit?

I'm a Christian, only one in my part of the family, but everyone celebrates Christmas and Birthdays in Norway anyway, I think regardless of faith.

In Russia, New Year's Day is far more prominent then Christmas. It's basically our substitute for it.

There's also our national Christmas, the Orthodox one, which is 7th of January (I think) - it's fairly religious and as such, I don't celebrate it.

Come on. When's the last time Christmas was actually about Christ?

It's all about presents these days, and, as an atheist, I'm prefectly fine with celebrating it.

I'm fairly non-religious, but I still celebrate Christmas because it's an excuse to eat a ton. get free college money from my grandparents, and hang out with the family.

Plus, I get two weeks off from school.
