Oblivion's leveling system and balance is one terrible design decision after another. Good thing there's mods to fix it. KCAS, OOO, MMM, and the UOP are, besides being spiffy acronyms, absolutely mandatory to turn the game from a decent-but-ultimately-frustrating game into a masterpiece.
Pity then that my PC can't run it :(
<link=http://www.oldblivion.com/index.php>I bet it can!
That's pretty awesome. Is it easy to install? I'm clueless with this kinda stuff, the only games I have on my laptop are Morrowind and Fallout 1 & 2.

[ Ah, okay so enchanting works alongside your skill level. I did not know that.

Well, I cast "Void Gazer" (night eye spell) constantly when in ruins and dungeon crawling, so I'll get there eventually. I started out as an apprentice anyway since I couldn't find any other skill I wanted as a major one, so I thought "what the hell"

I never use it though :/
What I do is create the smallest, least costly light/night eye spell possible, costing, like.... 1 Majika and spam it over and over and over. You'll get your illusion up to 50 in about 5-10 minutes!
Ooo that sounds like a good idea. What I did before in my last game to get my illusion skill up was repeatedly cast a small feather spell.

Got me up pretty high in just a few minutes if I remember correctly. Now that I know you need illusion skill to enchant chameleon items, I will be doing this a lot more ^-^

That'll do it! Then a quick trip to Bravil and you're sorted.

I only found out recently that any spell you buy from a vendor is then unlocked as an enchanting effect.

I'm pretty sure it's a snap (I don't need it), it looks like you download, unzip, and run.

firstly make sure your holding block as you cast spells as it nables you to cast them twice as fast.

yes enemies scale with you all the way to max lvl.

you should be finding glass armor and all the other best stuff by about lvl 22 - 25.

heres a tip before you open a chest equip all your luck rings and take a luck potion if required to bring your luck stat as high as possible because luck is what determines whats in the chests.
I can vouch for this as well. I'm experimenting right now with a high luck character (at 67ish right now). I've found some nifty items like a ring of water walking at level 5-6

Tip one: Don't level your character past level 2; due to Bethesda's incredibly stupid, backwards logic, they scaled EVERY DAMN THING to your character's level making leveling up a complete waste of time. In fact, it only makes the game artificially harder.
Todd Howard must have thought himself a genius...while completely failing to grasp the point behind leveling up in the first place.

So, why level 2? Because you need to be at least level 2 to complete the main quest.

Tip two: I really hate to say it, but if you must play Oblivion, I can only recommend the PC version. Why? Because the mods are worth the effort, and completely outshine much of the original content.

The Wiki disagrees, but I'll definately be trying it if you guys think it makes a difference.

There is ALWAYS level scaling.
It did kinda annoy me that even when I was a god the monsters still posed a threat but I guess it kept the game interesting.
Hehe... Even when you're the God of Gods the RATS can still kill you!

Items in the base game caps at 20. (Note that the way the tables work, up to around level 30, you'll still see a shift in what's spawning, it's just not new stuff.)
Shivering Isles has items that go as high as 30.
Enemies will continue to scale with you indefinitely.
Your level cap will be between level 45 and 55 depending on class.
So just to be clear... once I hit level 20, I don't need to avoid any quests (in the Vanilla game) in order to avoid nerfing levelled items by getting too early?
That's my recollection. The pregenerated bonuses stop getting nerfed around 14-20 depending on the quest you're in. That said, Sigil Stones might have a different version if you're +20, I don't remember.

I'm no expert. I just started playing yesterday and I almost got killed by an invisible wolf. Glitches rule. Those bandits on the road were quite hardcore with bow and sledgehammer. And then a fellow Kahjit tried to kill me as well.

Cyrodiil just sucks. I'll never move there. :/
There is a quest where there are invisible animals, you might have stumbled across it like I did the first time. I also thought it was a glitch.

I'm surprised Onyx hasn't commented in this thread yet. Oblivion is his life. Just last week I heard him talk someone through an obscure side quest from memory. He knew what color the shirt of the quest giver was.

And he did this while playing Castle Crashers with me.

He was just telling me the best way to make a mage character. Said it was really easy to fuck up. You should ask him if you haven't gotten a satisfying answer yet.

Enemy health, stamina, and magicka is always scaled according to player level. Additionally, enemy stats, resistances, abilities, greater and lesser powers, possible equipment, and spells will level accordingly with the player.

The level at which new items, new enemies, leveled chests, enemy equipment, leveled quest reward items, and leveled drops cease to increase is 25. At this point, you will have access to the best of all items. Please note that some items are glitched, so some levels of items will not have the proper effects that they claim to have.

For any and all other questions, please read the unofficial (though very thorough) Elder Scrolls wiki [http://www.uesp.net/]. It has basically anything you've ever wanted to know, and then some.

/thread
Please don't use '/thread'. It's rather obnoxious.

True the wiki is great but it doesn't have the fun discussion, gameplay stories and anecdotes that we're hearing from the Escapists.
I have just noticed actually that the Wiki lacks any good strategies/interesting descriptions of enemies. I haven't played Oblivion in a while (so haven't used the wiki) and forgot about it all. I wish that there was more "lore" or cool bestiary/other information that was more in-depth to add more to the game world.

Oblivion : The RPG where you DONT want to gain levels.

I hate how oblivion is broken in everything. I really want to like it, but it doesnt want me to.
Even mods like Oscure Oblivion Overhaul only partially fix some of the problems. (but it does makes the game world much richer and interesting)

That would be really cool. The game is so vast and packed full of history and little secrets that it's a shame a lot of it is only glanced over.

I seem to recall material like this did make it into earlier versions of the game, there's a whole back story behind the Dreugh that is basically non-existent here, for example.

they scale up but after about level 22 the game really can't keep up. I didn't find anything difficult after that. I got bored of my character after about level 28. I had a khajit with master blade, light armour and sneak. I had all the daedric items. I had speed stat over 120. I found the "ring of perfection" which gives everything a 10 point boost.

My only problem with it was that only the enemies levelled up.

You try doing bruma and keeping the grandmaster and the blade dude alive at level 20, its frustrating as all hell without an insta win spell.

(which you can make XD)
