Oh boy, BioWare's really mouthing off a lot lately. Maybe they're trying to indirectly hype that new mmorpurger thingy that they are working on. Well, whatever their motives I certainly can't blame them for being opinionated, at least we know they still have souls and shit.

Yay! I agree so much!
Motion controls are some of the best things to ever happen to gaming! Right up there with fucking DRM.

Whenever I think "Boy, I wish I could run around with a gun", I invite a few friends over and have a war with airsoft guns, not pantomime it in front of a T.V.

Zeschuk: Motion Controls Will Make Games Better
Translation: Motion controls will make games more profitable, mwauhahahah!

There's a section in Mass Effect 2 where you can pull the right trigger to shove a mercenary out of a very high window, and then make a quip as he plummets to the ground far, far below. But how much more immersive would it be if rather than pushing a button to defenestrate the unlucky hired gun, it was triggered by a shove from the player?
Answer: no more immersive.

Zeschuk also acknowledges that there will always be a certain degree of resistance from hardcore gamers when it comes to motion controls: "There's that impediment of a controller but hardcore gamers are never going to give that up," he said. "It might be nice to see a hybrid of a controller used with additional gesture on the side for immersive elements."
"Immersive elements." What? Just, what?

Immersion is not something you can switch on and off at will. It is a property of a game as a whole.

It just sounds like a way to camouflage QTEs. "Dance like a robot to not die."

Motion controls aren't bad in some cases, but they don't add to immersion at all; quite the opposite, because you have to break your concentration, break the "flow" of immersion if you will, to shove or wiggle a remote.

That's not to say they are bad. Sword-fighting on the Wii, for example, is (usually) excellent - games like Red Steel or No More Heroes show us this. But motion controls that aren't a core part of gameplay (like shoving a gangster out of a window) destroy all sense of realism. Not to mention that if motion controls don't break your immersion by themselves, the bugs in them definitely will.

BioWare, shut up. Give me Jade Empire 2.

There's not much to say about why this is wrong that hasn't been said before, so here's the best thing I can come up with:

If motion control technology was the future of gaming Valve would be making one.

A motion control/controller hybrid... Has everyone forgoten the sixaxis? I mean even the developers of Heavy Rain seemed to have forgetten about it. It does kinda add to immersion, but only for the QTEs in Heavy Rain. Even then it was immersion breaking when it wouldn't respond. I feel so sorry for the sixaxis, it has suffered the fate of many playstation accessories such as playstation eye.

Maybe one day if we can develop both accurate motion controls and computer AI that can interpret our every move, then motion controls would make games better. But that wont happen anytime soon, so...

I get that everybody's already beat this into the dirt here, but just for the record: I already use motion controls every day in real life. Keep that shit out of my games.

Bioware..... You have gone down exponentially in my opinion.
You read my mind. My first thought after reading this was simply: "Please don't."

I would like to thank BioWare for this. Not only did they successfully make a statement 90% of their fanbase will hate them for, but they're showing their true colors: BioWare has never given a damn about its fanbase, there in it for the same reason every other company is... MONEY...

First off, it kills me a little to say this, but I agree with BioWare. Whoever says "it cant be use immersively" is a dolt, one who probably has never used the technology, or a good one. I find certain Wii games to be immersive and well executed; the only difference is instead of a wrong button push I make a wrong arm flail. Motion controls arent bad, they just need time to develop.

ON THE FLIP SIDE; BioWare has to realize that hardcore gamers will judge the technology as useless, without using it. And incorperating it in the gimmicky sence that was given as an example DEGRADES the technology, and yourselfs.

BioWare: Your games are designed for a certain group of people. You either like BioWare games, or you dont. And there isnt a huge overlap in your fanbase and Kinect Fans. Do us all a favor, and stick to your style of RPG's. Everyone will be happier that way.

These day, whenever I see "Bioware: ____________" as a News Room title...I know something stupid is on its way. I like these guys...but they need to shut up.

I don't think that making hand gestures like I'm conversing in real life at a FLAT SCREEN is going to add to my "immersion".

It'd actually break it, because I'd be distracted by the whole "looking like an idiot" thing.
I don't get the whole "looking like an idiot" argument. Do people outside occasionally pop in and watch you game while remarking how cool you look stationary, hunched over a controller? No, then why does anyone care what they look like while gaming. When did gamers become as self conscious as Hollywood when it comes to how they look?

"It might be nice to see a hybrid of a controller used with additional gesture on the side for immersive elements."
Damn, that's such a great idea! In fact it's so good that I have to wonder why it's never been done before!

....

Oh...
