Wait, James Vegas? Somewhat reminds me of Johnny Rico, methinks Bioware's going for a reference to Heinlein's Starship Troopers. I mean, if you're borrowing from other works about space marines, that's not a bad place to start. Especially after Bioware has borrowed from so much other literature (the Geth are heavily based on Hobbes' Leviathan, the rachni are clearly referencing Ender's Game). I'm interested in how they'll develop the character, though he might just become the Jacob. If he's a satire on 'space marine' video game characters then it will be awesome.

This so much this. I mean seriously we need generic muscled white guy to go with our generic muscled black guy?
Awww. I liked Jacob. Not enough to do a romance with him, and he certainly is more boring that the other squadmembers, but I found no reason to hate the guy.
I liked Jacob too. Not enough for a romance, but he was a nice guy and a good friend to my Shep. I think he got better the more you talked to him - he starts out kind of standoffish, but as the game goes on, he warms up a lot and there are even manly hugs/fist bumps involved. Not my favorite, but pretty good anyway.
Yeah. My favorite part was when he was talking about having a drinking party at the Citadel if he survives. Kinda disappointed that never happened in-game...

Bioware can't go wrong. Worst case scenario, he performs more Gilbert & Sullivan.

Hell, I hope Shepards 2nd rematching with annoying reporter woman involves the crew singing HMS Pinafore together before Shepard finishes with ejecting her out of an air lock.

The game is in safe hands.

...

Except maybe in Germany : /

First Impressions: "Oh god! He's ugly!"

No joke, that is what I said from just looking at the picture before I sat down to read the article. After having read the article? I can't say the situation has improved. I know next to nothing about him other than whoever designed his character seemed to want him to look like a monkey. Seriously... what is wrong with that nose?

I'm on the fence about Mass Effect 3, I might not play it and I might play it just to see how badly Bioware can screw up the ending. But if this guy's going to be featured? Well, let's put that in the "No" check box category.

I've pre-ordered. Yes, I said I never would again after DA2. But damn me, I have.

I think the idea of this character is sound; an angry, gung-ho marine determined to hit back against the Reapers who've attacked his planet would be a great, destabilizing force in your crew. If the loyalty mechanics are more complex, he could become a time bomb: Needing to be delicately balanced in order to keep peace and loyalty of many. That would be great.

The problem is that nothing Bioware have announced suggest that. Instead, it feels part of a wider swing to being just another gung ho space marine game, consistent with the swing toward that in ME2.

Since he's supposed to only care about fighting, I'm hoping he's psychotic. Psychotic characters are always fun

You know what?
Screw new squadmates, Just give me everyone of Mass Effect 2 on the normandy. I don't need this alience crap, I had a team, and they were the best in the entire Milky Way. We don't need another buff ass I can beat the shit out of anyone with mah fist person, that's what Jacob was for.

I liked my old squad too much to go into having around 6 people always avalible, and the only 2 I like in that are Garrus and Tali.

He looks like Soap from MW2 which doesn't exactly help his case anything that reminds me of MW2 is doing something wrong, but if he can make up for it by being interesting or awesome I can easily overlook that.

What he looks like is a gorilla. He has serious gorilla face. I'm hoping it is a mistake; I think BioWare accidentally released the joke picture of the new character.

I liked Jacob he was my favorite romance option for femshep mostly because I needed that hilariously cheesy porno ending to act as a quick moment of humor before the nightmare fuel that was to come or as my friend Chad might say "Jacob is my bro!"

Atleast he won't be in the middle of some calibrations.
HA! I see what you did there. Good one.

OT: I see a new character who happens to be human...so he'll be spending a lot of time in the Normandy MK.III while the aliens and I go out and play. Unless of course he is the HK-47 of Mass Effect 3 in which case I'll talk to him from time-to-time after each mission.

He kinda looks like a "Bro". You know, drinks beer, partys hard, doesnt understand the workings of the outside world. ((no offence to any bros out there.))

And i think that could be kind of a good thing. We've had super soldiers, Krogan warlords, Asari battle maidens, and an insanely powerful Psychic-psychopath.

Someone whos new to the whole, "Traveling the galaxy and saving the world" thing is something new we need. Sure, the design of him might need a little work,((Unless roids are part of his background)) but i think he could be a good addition to the team.

Well Obsidian managed to make an un-intelligent, illiterate, physically strong, former elite soldier interesting.

So this guy may look like a boring character but he could be interesting.

whoop-de-fucking-doo he looks like a meat head. i still feel like he can have a deep backstory and be as compelling as tali or garrus. to be honest tho i dont give a damn wat he looks like cuz to me sheppard also looks like a bit of a meat head and yet there he is (on the road again, there he is up on the stage. sorry bob segers awesome) in the middle of a deep story spannig soon to be three games

A Hoo-Rah style optimistic persona could really work in a bleak situation, particularly if it invigorates a cast losing drive.

What I'm hoping for the most is some actual competitiveness with Shepherd "The Legend". I would love to see some real space cowboy rivalry going on rather than dick sucking.

Really, I don't see what's wrong with the "hoo-rah" personality, so to speak. On two separate elite teams consisting of a total of seventeen (counting Shepard and DLC, not double counting Garrus and Tali) of the galaxy's greatest warriors, and there is not one example of a hoo-rah guy. This is like taking the world's top twenty McDonalds customers and not finding one overweight.
