It's stupid to ban the swastika on a closed, private service where there's no way to explain your specific use of it? Like it or not, the swastika means terrible things now. It's basically been banned everywhere else too, you know. Like, try to walk into work with a swastika belt buckle or necklace. See how fast you get reprimanded/fired (obviously you wouldn't do that, but you get my point). It's strange to see people get up in arms about this when the rest of the civilized world has already pretty much done the same thing.

For one thing, a buddhist version isn't set diagonally, and it's also reversed in comparison to the Nazi version.

The buddhist Swastika is also an old Chinese letter/symbol. It means the number 10,000.

Which is actually one of the Reasons Hitler used the symbol, He wanted his empire to stand for 10,000 years, it would have been the third Reich, but also the 10,000 year Reich.

The modern swastika is a hate symbol. We of course can't pass judgement on anyone that used it prior to the Nazis, but now it's a hate symbol. When people use it in an online game, they are not making a statement about the shifting perceptions of society, they are being assholes. They're toeing the line and pushing the limits. It's like seeing a "keep off the grass" sign and running out onto the grass even though there's nothing on the other side. It's not noble, it's seeing how far you can push it. Well now, on this game, the line's been drawn. It's better they ban it than be all wishy-washy about because of some pre-WW2 use of the symbol that half the players are barely aware of.

There are currently eight pages of discussion about this now. Just on this one story. Clearly the symbol is controversial, so I see no reason to allow it to remain. We can wax philosophic on forums all day, but people trying to run this game have a job to do.

This isn't really an infringement on free speech, it's just punishment for using a hateful symbol. Like how you can't yell bomb on a plane without getting tacked by an air marshall or you can't trash talk a gangster without getting shot in the face? Well you can't use a swastika without getting banned. It's not like Xbox live is stopping these assholes from stitching it on their shirts or tattoing it on their chests. You just can't use it on this game. Cry about freedoms lost if you must, but I think the rest of us aren't as deluded.

I'm pretty sure we're talking about simple emblems and flat colors. Show me the Black Ops emblem that looks like either of those and we'll talk. I don't think marching band pics or embroidery are options in the game.

Why yes, yes they did, but interestingly enough the swastika isn't only a buddhist symbol, it's all through the asian pacific reagin and can be found as far west as Syria.

Actually He's right about Stalin and Alexander the Great being worse, they have more bloodshed on their hands than two Nazi reigns, the torture was more extencive and labour camps more previlent. please don't tell me your only argument against it is "But the Nazis tried to wipe out an entire race" A life is a life, no matter what race or creed it is, life is valued. And if we're going to get into semantics here, look up Pol pot or Chiang Kai-shek and read some real horror stories, war does horrible things to everyone, not just those that seek genocide.
