Check Out The Sequel To Avatar: The Last Airbender

A year after it was announced, The Legend of Korra's got a new trailer, and it looks stunning.

Remember how, last summer, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102248-Nickelodeon-Greenlights-Steampunk-Sequel-to-Avatar-The-Last-Airbender>it was revealed that <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Last-Airbender-Complete-Collection/dp/B000FZETI4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1311836300&sr=8-2>Avatar: The Last Airbender was getting a sequel show that would take place a long while after the first ended? And how it would include a steampunk setting? And how M. Night Shyamalan wouldn't have anything to do with the new show? Well, a year after its announcement, Nickelodeon showed off a trailer for the series, The Legend of Korra, at Comic-Con, which is shown here.

Of course, this is a teaser trailer, so everything looks cool without explaining any real plot details. However, Nickelodeon also put out this official synopsis:

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang - a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra (voice of Janet Varney).

With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern Avatar world, Republic City - a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive.

However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin (JK Simmons), Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Based on the trailer, The Legend of Korra looks like it'll be even better than its predecessor. It looks like the world will be even more grand than before, and it'll have crazy action sequences, incredible style, and some of the goofy humor that the original series contained; on top of that, the story sounds like it'll be more adult. Oh, and the fact that this isn't a sequel to last summer's The Last Airbender only sweetens the deal.

The Legend of Korra is apparently going to begin airing sometime in early 2012.

Fuck yes. I loved the series, and I've been very interested in seeing how the story continues after Aang.

I should get the DVD boxset of the whole series and watch it before this comes out...damn I'm excited now.

Still freaking psyched. Avatar: The Last Airbender is, in my opinion, the greatest show ever made. My avatar displays how much I love that show; and I do love it. I've seen it 8 times through. I freaking love it. So obviously, for this, I am incredibly excited. A sequel by the same team, same creators, even the same music composers... heck yes.
I agree with this man. BTW, dude - who was your favorite character in the series? (I'm guessing it's Sokka).

As you can probably tell, mine's Toph. She is quite possibly one of the most badass-est fictional characters, EVAR.
Toph is very hardcore. Plus, the idea of a blind girl who sees through her bending abilities is absolute genius. I think Toph was one of the team's greatest creative triumphs.

However, my favorite character is Iroh. Because he's the most badass fictional character in the history of everything and everyone ever in the entire world and all of existence and eternity. Ever. Of all time. And yet he's also very wise and often very hilarious.

Honestly though, it's a difficult call for me to make. All the characters are so well-developed and fleshed out, each one of them is interesting in their own way and has tons of positive characteristics to admire as well as flaws that allow them to grow in the show. Zuko is probably the most complex character, and I love him for that. It was great to see Katara grow from a timid little girl excited about moving water to one of the shows most badass characters (seriously, The Puppetmaster is one of the greatest episodes of any show ever, and her display of power in The Southern Raiders? o_o). Aang has an interesting conflict between his fun and light nature (he is still a kid, after all) and the heavy duties his position puts upon him. Sokka is the buttmonkey most of the show, and is rather hilarious at it, but takes quite a few levels in badass later on. And Toph... Toph is just awesome. Freaking awesome.

Also, Azula is one of the greatest villains of the last decade. Of anything.

I'm actually that they left out that short clip of Zuko reuniting with his mother. A profound moment like that deserves much more coverage.

Anyway, I'm wondering if this anti-bender movement in the new series will be anything like the anti-mutant movement in X-Men.

When I read the title, I was afraid it was a sequel for the rather bad movie.

I'm glad to see it is this instead. I'm looking forward to this, got to love steampunk tech!

seeing an old Aang and what i would think is Aang's son is pretty damn sweet..also Aang's son looks in his late teens to early 20s which is interesting since when i saw it was 70+ years in the future i would think he would be at the oldest middle-aged, (assuming Aang and Katara had the kid in their mid-20s or so). but this works just fine with me
I do remember reading somewhere that he is their youngest son, so they could have had children earlier that may come up at some point in the series. More likely is that the guy with the airbender tattoos is Aang's son's son.

Some other things I've seen include
- a character will be named after Mako, Iroh's voice actor who passed away
- the police force for the city will consist of metal benders
- Toph's children will appear
- Zuko's voice actor is returning, not as Zuko but a character related to Zuko

This looks like it's going to be incredible. My only complaint is that they only plan to make 26 episodes.

O dear god, just when I thought I couldn't possibly look forward to something more than I do to guild wars 2 O.0 And than they put a release date on it even later than gw2 :S Oh well at least there IS a release date. Man, late 2011/early 2012 is gonna be SWEET.

Also, me and my friends had been discussing whether or not a second series would be a good idea. I think we pretty much got our answer :)

I've always been somewhat disinclined to like Steampunk, so I'm a tad wary of the setting, but I still can't wait to see this thing.

I certainly can't wait to see this!
Wow for one thing for only 70 years they sure had advance ALOT. I mean before Avatar Aang (200 or so years ago) the technologies were still primitive well during the series they did had some steampunk vehicles.
I am dying to see the flashback of what happen to Aang and co after he save the world.

Well... This seems much better than the other one, that shall not be named. And this seems almost fully hand drawn (Even if it is done on digital form). I love the idea and can't wait to see it.

You don't need to worry about #2 since, if I recall correctly, none of the major characters from the previous series are alive.
70 years is past and not even one of the original cast is still alive? Correct me if I'm wrong but they were all Teenagers right? At least ONE of them should still be alive and kicking (Besides Appa). Damn.

Still, the show looks decent. I'll probably watch it at least once.

It isn't steampunk. If anything, the original Avatar had steampunk in it, especially in the Fire Nation. This sequel however, if you pay attention to the trailer, shows high rise buildings, cars, fedoras; this isn't 19th century style technology, this is 1930's technology, way past steampunk. I wonder if we're going to see gangsters. I hope we're going to see gangsters.

By the way, did somebody else think of an Asian-style New York when watching this trailer? Whatever it's based on it looks BLOODY AMAZING. Ten times better than I ever could've expected. Oh man, the amount of fantastic TV shows that are (re-)airing in 2012 is just so damn amazing. Mad Men, Avatar, Game of Thrones, hopefully Boardwalk Empire...

Probably one of the better shows out there, writing was just awesome I do hope this'll be as good.
Atleast they are taking their time and luckily there are only 26 episodes set, I don't think you can keep one city that interesting for long and they seem to understand that too.

The two problems i can see about this show

#1 It has biiig shoes to fill, and im not just talking about the Original Cartoon or to make up from the movie. They have decided to make it look more local and focused on the one city so they are going to have to ensure that the scenario dosent get old.

#2 The fact that they have stated that they are going to be starting from the character already knowing 3/4 elements. In the original Aang only knew Wind and less about his place in the 'verse, and EVEN less about the roll of the avatar. Korra is going to have guidance from the friends and family of the very recently passed on Aang. As well as the wisdom of her own learning of the elements, and the training from the best masters, Aang didn't have that he had whoever he could find.

Im interested and excited but those are the two big hurdles i see that they will have to overcome.
Well with regards to #2; the original was largely about Aang learning about his role and the elements, as you hinted, and defeating the fire nation was more of a secondary task, however from the looks of it this is going to be less about the learning side of things and more about trying to lower the crime rate in the city and prevent the anti-bending rebellion

OT: I started grinning before the advert started and didn't stop laughing for a few minutes after the end scene. Man I love Avatar. This better be as good as it looks or I'm breaking out the pitchforks and torches!

Edit:

May I just take a moment to say: "MAYBE IT'S FRIENDLY!" Thank you. One of the best scenes in the entire series in my opinion

You're right! The cut-off point of Steam Punk is the tech at the end of the Russian Civil War, past that is Diesel Punk (Which is where LoK is at).
