Does anyone else find this slightly... I want to say ironic, but I know that's not the right word.

Anyway, this just screams out false results.
Ha, I saw that too. Being fair, I'm sure that acronym turns out differently in Mandarin.
Nope that is what it actually stands for.

I'm not surprised one bit. I live here and you can see this crap everyday. The fact that parents are worried it could effect their childrens studies is hilarious.

Of course it will, students here don't get any free time at all, so anything they do for fun will impact their studies. Most Chinese students live at school from primary school to the end of high school. In high school their day starts at 6:00am and finishes at 10:00pm. Plus they get what would be a weeks worth of homework for us, every night.

Even if the statistic was right. (which it's not) I wouldn't be surprised, I'd snap under that kind of work load to.

And the issue is still the same as in the west. Parents are to blame, not the media.

80% of Chinese inmates have become murderers due to online games...

Therefore, 80% of China has online gaming capability?

America doesn't have that yet...Hell, Japan doesn't have that ability and they're at the forefront of online gaming.
What? No?

80% of prisoners doesn't equate to 80% of the population.
So...how many of the Chinese population have played online games? Going by the figures here [http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs2/r188.pdf], China has 1.47 million people in prison. That makes, say, 1 million gamers in Chinese Prisons.

China has systematically checked through the background of these 1 million gamers.(Which we know, because we can trust a Government that blocks its own critics) Which are a small part of it's 1,321 million population. In fact, that's just over 0.1% of its population.

Strange, that's an awfully small amount of people playing games given that the worldwide approximation is 1 billion against the world's 6.6 billion people; we'd be expecting 18% (roughly) to be gamers.

So, if we have proof positive that these 80% of criminals are gamers, that still only makes 6% of gamers into criminals.

But wait! If all of the evil killer gamers are in prison, what about all the kids at the internet addiction camps? If gaming makes them evil, they should be in prison. And if it doesn't, why are they in camps?

I don't know about you, but I smell a modicum of untruth here.
So... China lied to us?

May I borrow someone's cry-arm... I don't know how to handle this very surising novelty.

This is the same government that killed a teen for being addicted to the Internet. I don't trust them one bit one their news.

If China were a person I'd kick them in the nards.

Don't practically all Chinese people play video games? (Yay for racial stereotyping).

In any case I giggled at how in the yahoo article they blamed video games for pregnancies.

China has gamers? I thought the government said that automatically made them a criminal... Oh wait...
Moving on to my actual point: Does this at all mean that 80% of gamers are violent? A square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't always a square.

In China they have rehab camps for people who play too many video games. It's interesting that when these kids leave the camps they are sadder than when they went in because for most of teh people in these camps its the first time they have ever had real life friends.
You can't really blame these people for playing videogames, it's not like you can go outside and play real sport in china. You can't see from one end of a football field to the other in most Chinese cities.

"Socialist Restrictions"?

Isn't that an oxymoron?
Socialism is about using government control of resources to achieve a higher standard of life for the average person. But government control of resources inherently results in more restriction. Socialism is about making sure everybody gets to eat, not freedom.

Order results in less freedom, but more people eat. Chaos, hypothetically, results in wasted resources, but more freedom.

I will agree that socialism isn't necessarily bad or inferior. I will also agree that a socialist state doesn't necessarily result in less human rights. But a socialist state is ihnerently more restricted, and you would have to be pretty brainwashed to beleive otherwise. While, from my perspective, some conservatives may seem unfairly biased against socialists, many socialists have an unrealistic mental definition of socialism, and unrealistic expectations of socialism.

Simply put: Socialist Restrictions is redundant, not an oxymoron, as it is a system that tends more towards order, and less towards chaos. Your perception that it is an oxymoron stems from an unrealistic mental image of socialism, a glorification of socialism, that is no more realistic or good than the conservative glorification of corporate nepotism.

They forgot to blame Sid Meier's Civilization for turning them to communism in the first place!

Ah, yes. The authoritarian regime with a penchant for falsifying information and finding virtually any reason to justify anything that they do is claiming that an interactive medium of entertainment is evil.

Yeah, I could do a '99% of the prisoners eat meat-> being an omnivore makes you more prone to crime' or any number of 'these people all did something similar, and now they're all in jail' statement, but it's a bit too easy with China.

But...80% of all people in general are gamers have at least played a game in their life.

They're probably counting anyone who's ever played a game as a "gamer"
