I dont understand the sudden calvalry of defense notch consistently gets. Minecraft was a one hit wonder. WHat has he done to follow that up rather than attempting to port it out the butt to every platform besides nintendo products? I mean seriously. If this was somebody like the guy behind sid miers i could see the massive wall of defense, but this is JUST notch. Ugh.

It does not necessarily have anything to do with the potential business success that may follow with FBs investment. Even if I knew for certain I could make thousands investing in rare earth metal mining in Africa, I still wouldn't because of what it is doing to that country.
Africa isn't a country. Just saying.

/pedantry
Yeah, it was supposed to read "to their country" as in countryside, but I fumbled the words and didn't notice my error.

Cliff's thoughts always come off to me as brain damaged, he was the one who was crying about used game sales equating you to a pirate as I recall. What does it make a company when they're crying you sold a product you bought and own to someone else? A big company of babies.

Everyone was pitching in to get an idea made into a reality, then a company comes in and funds it all on their own, of course the little guys are gonna be mad because they don't have tons of money to throw away, they thought they were helping but in the end what help was really needed when a multibillion dollar company just comes along and funds it more than anyone could have dreamed.
Facebook on top of this has done shady things and the creator has said some worrysome things, so not wanting to be involved with it is understandable.

So the fact is, people who backed the Rift have no right to complain because at the end of the day they were just donators, even though this really needs to change. It's one thing to get a project that wouldn't have seen the light of day on it's feet, it's another to pave the path for a project to get bought out for billions of dollars.

"N-S-A IS BUYING OCULUS VR FOR $2 BILLION."

O.K. For all you who see nothing wrong with the Facebook buyout or who are criticizing Notch for pulling his support please read the above headline which replaced "Facebook" with "N-S-A" and tell us you'd still feel the same way.

The reason I bring this up is because all your arguments I've seen still would be true if it were the N-S-A who bought them out...

Massive organization? ...check

Very Deep pockets? ...check

Can fast-track the OR project to completion with a wider user-base? ...check

Tons of contacts, strings they can pull, influence they can exert in the industry? ...check

Gathers massive amounts of personal and social data on citizens which they can use for their benefit, benefit of the OR, or to trade to other partners? ...check

Shady, secretive dealings in back-rooms with little to no transparency to the public? Questionable and controversial ethics and business/financial dealings? ...check and check

...and so on and so on.

So? Would you still feel the same way? Does looking at the above scenario from a different viewpoint give you better insight into why many feel the way they do and why many stopped supporting the OR?

Cliff for what ever reason thinks he's the Kevin Rose of the gaming industry. He's not. He's not likable like kevin rose is. He's rarely right with his awkward bitter opinions, and I just wish he'd stop talking. He made an inconsequential but popular game once and now he thinks he's god of the gaming industry, but every time he opens his mouth it's just lashing out at angry consumers. If Notch is a pouty kid then Cliff is a dumb arrogant bitter nosey baby.

Edit- damn it I just figures out what Cliff could do with the money! He could go fu... Ah never mind you get the point.

Remember kids. The rules say to judge a statement by its content...except for Cliff Bleszinski.

I don't feel any shame in agreeing with him here. I doubt Facebook really cares about Minecraft, so the only people losing here are people who wanted official support like he had promised.
Pretty much this.

Notch is only hurting the people who wanted to play his game on the rift. Cliff may have sounded like an asshole, but he's right.

Cliffy B saying something outrageous to keep his name in gaming news, this isn't new. It's his typical pattern and how he works. He says something outrageous at least once a month just to keep his name in the news. I'm pretty sure he just loves to ego surf about himself.

Regardless of whether Bleszinski is a hypocrite or an asshole (or both), he's spot on with every point he made.

The only investments Notch has been making that I've been taking notice of have been in Age of Wonders III. I'm more interested in actual games at this stage over vague plans and promises with VR.

Don't get me wrong, it has potential and not going to jump ship at this recent Facebook update but I'm still not entirely sold. Minecraft could work but is a game I've already played plenty going to sell me of something as new as the Rift?

There you go. [http://www.destructoid.com/cliffy-b-upset-by-hateful-8-10-gears-of-war-3-reviews-211562.phtml]

OT: Well, ain't that a surprise, CliffyB being contrary for the sake of being contrary, keep on whining, you little shit. I don't see Notch's move as petty or childish, on the contrary, it's called "smart business", he has absolutely every right to not trust Facebook.

Is this not the same Cliff Bleszinski that threw a fit and took his ball home away from PC gaming when he continually complained about a handful that pirated games (while punishing the ones that would have bought it)? I swear it's him, the whinny child that still has yet to make Fort Night game, which was revealed in ...2012ish?

Isn't there actually a mod that lets you play Minecraft on Occulus Rift? I took a gander at one of Notch's blog postings in the wake of this, he had a link that said it was to said mod, but I don't know how old the version of Minecraft used would be.

Anyway, disregarding the innate hypocrisy of Cliff calling anyone a pouty kid, I don't actually see the issue with what Notch is doing. o_O Well, okay, there's the 'Butbutbut I wanna play Minecraaaaaaaft on it' PERSONAL disappointment, but I mean in the wider scheme.

It's either going to go two ways, both of which I personally like.

1) Occulus Rift, despite its Facebook ties, releases and delivers everything as promised, without the ad-laden, data-mining, obnoxiously social money-grubbing attachments that many are fearing will occur, in which case Minecraft WILL be coming back. It won't release as early as was probably originally planned, but once the proverbial coast is clear and Facebook demonstrates it can actually be responsible and show some restraint, it'll go a long way to assuaging the concerns of both developers and customers.

2) Occulus Rift releases as a god awful, toxic, PC-platform-restricting abomination, with Facebook's ultimate aim being what its ultimate aim generally HAS been, which is to make as much money as humanly possible, privacy be damned. In which case one of the most accessible and popular indie games out there does NOT come and help bolster the Rift's popularity, increasing the chances this wholly unpleasant and potentially harmful pile of trash curls up and dies.

This isn't a kid sulking, taking his ball and going home. This is a kid making sure the fella he's giving the ball to doesn't fill it with sand and lob it at the head of an old lady. A fella who has had a history of old-people-abuse, but is looking real wide-eyed innocent and saying 'Me? NEVER!'

Because, bottom line, whether or not Facebook gets directly involved, the ball in question WILL be given to them at this point, not the Occulus Rift's team.

Sorry what ? Cliffy has shown he's abit of a brat himself. And greed was the underline to his bitching. Notch might well be acting up but its HIS game and if he hates facebook then so the fuck what, not like Notch gives too much of a shit about bizz side or cash side of it. Facebook are not loved, but every fucker has one now, its forced onto you these days like fucking IE was.

Its did not need the funds. It got WAAAY over its target anyway right ? And im sure if they asked the gaming community who loved these under dogs would be more the happy to give them more money. Alot of people know about it, most of your facebook users who are living off the dam thing sure as fuck aint the target audience. They may not be able to take risks but they had the core right. Facebook has wotsapp, instagram, now Oculas ffs piss off already, we all know that facebook is going to come preloaded onto it just like every fucking phone seems to be now.

That reminds me, I thought Notch surrendered all Minecraft development to Jens Bergensten and promised not to get involved. So, in theory, he should have no say in the matter whether or not Minecraft gets Rift support.

When a game is as successful as Minecraft, it kinda deserves to be ported all over the place.

Besides which Notch is, all in all, a pretty chill dude. I got tired of Minecraft long ago and wouldn't call myself a fan of Notch at all, but i can't really think of anything objectionable he has said or done. He is one of the most humble and laid back dudes in an increasingly bitchy industry. Add to that the general worship indie devs get and it isn't exactly surprising that folks are fond of him.

Well, I didn't like him much, but then after watching the last Desert Bus for Hope, in which he paid Ten Thousand Dollars for a packet of Silica Gel for a Charity, I realized he is the kind of eccentric rich that I like. Yes he chimes in on the video game world, yes he doesn't really make many games, but is that so bad? He doesn't rush out sequel after sequel, this isn't a bad thing.

I think Notch made made the smart move, at first he did a good thing by helping fund and support a fellow indy, with the FB buyout well...hell if they want Minecraft on it they will have to pony up the cash for Notch to develop it, why would he help FB for free when its clear FB can afford to buy its toys. As far as Cliff is concerned...well I've been ignoring everything he has said for a long time anyway, he is probably just jealous that Notch is actually in a position to make those decision about his property.
