Why are so many gamers quick to ***** about a game that exists solely to provide pleasure?
Because people pay money and invest their time in them, often following peer trends it's not such an easy option to just buy something else.

If it doesn't do it's job of providing pleasure, then people certainly have grounds to complain.

I can see his point but there is a flip side to all this.

If developers/publishers stopped:

- Adding new DLC for games so quickly, even on release date for some; they are discussing Dragon Age 2 DLC already and the game isn't out for over a month yet.
- Stopped tacking on multiplayer to every game series, even if all it's prequels were single player only.
- Stopped churning out sequels like there is no tomorrow, while changing practically nothing.
- Stopped with the failed DRM.
- Waited until games worked fine before releasing them.
- Stopped shipping multiplayer games with 5 maps so they can intentionally wait for a month or two to release new maps that have to be paid for.

Then they'd get a hell of a lot less complaints.

Hence why the only complaints Valve gets are when games not released as soon as people would like. Basically Valve are loved so much that all people want is more of what they are selling.
AAAAAHHH!!! THIS! Ninja'd, but everything you said and more.

They also need to FIX the games before they even dare think about releasing them. Neverwinter Nights 2 expansions, anyone? Retail versions were so broken you couldn't even beat them.

Just about the last guy who should be telling us about how creative the game industry he´s working in is.
Criticism on blackops deal with it.

i find community complaints to be a double edged sword. on one hand it serves as creativ, although harsh, criticism which help developers see problems with their games that they themselves may not see or the community may suggest an alteration to the game that would significantly improve the game. on the other hand, when a community starts flaming and bashing every little thing about a game or they start bitching about mechanics they dont like just due to their hatred of it, not because the mechanics are faulty in any way, they begin to take away from a developers creativity and they start to hold back and play it safe by only releasing titles with mechanics that are proven and not straying out into the unkown in fear of getting flamed.

in my opinion, i think the community has to stop flaming over pointless things and start concentrating on the things that matter in games. stop fighting over which console is better, stop complaining about RPG elements emerging in shooters, and start complaining about glitches in games, or an unbalanced weapon/ boss that wrecks everything. we dont need to stop complaining, we need to start complaining about things that matter and can be changed for the better

Whilst i agree the community is prone to bitching (im looking at YOU NeoGaf), black-ops brought a lot of problems to the series it did not have before and further exasibated some of the existing flaws especially in the singleplayer department. There is also the issue that Activision tries to sell us the same fucking game every year. As a series, CoD has given gamers a LOT more to ***** about than most.
First off, Treyarch actually looks into issues. But the forums always nitspick and finds new loopholes to complain about. And the reason Activision throws out a CoD every year is beacuse of all the sweet moneh. Think about it, it is one of the most popular FPS's out there as we speak. And pirating is not helping the innovating department in fear of piracying and boicott.

I have to agree with Treyarch that there are a lot of people out there who act atrociously. However if I could change anything about the game industry I'd give everyone a holodeck, no question about it.

Somehow this doesn't exactly raise my esteem of the professionalism of Treyarch's community manager.

It's a rather simple definition of gamer response: if nobody is bitching on your forums, then it in all probability means nobody cares about your game.
As an example you might want to look at the battle.net forums. Blizzards customer service, and general response to faults in their games is top notch, but their forums still are a vitriolic cesspool - even if they are addressing valid faults in the game.

As community manager it comes with the job to sort the actual critics from the trolls, and somehow I doubt that that'll change in the near future.

Can't say though I approve of moaning. Nobody forces you to buy their game, and it's doubtful there'll ever be a game without drawbacks for anyone.

Seems like a few people have hit on this issue, but I'd like to reiterate it.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEEN "CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM" AND "BITCHING"

When the Treyarch guy here is talking about "negativity," "vitriol," and "contrarian," he is talking about bitching, not constructive criticism.

Bitching gets us nowhere. If we ***** about a game, we will not, and I repeat WILL NOT, be taken seriously. Even if we have a good point, if we *****, our complaints will be dismissed as the whinings of a butthurt fanboy and Treyarch and friends will continue to put out the same damn game every year.

If we want change to happen, we need to constructively criticize these games. We need to point out, in a logical and reasonable fashion, what is broken, what needs to be fixed, and what we want from their games. I understand that it pisses us off when games don't work as they should (especially all the issues with the PC version of BlOps that people have pointed out time and time again on this thread), but we need to dial back the hate a couple thousand notches and stay collected and constructive when we post about these games here and anywhere else.

What pisses me off, is that fact that ps3 and pc gamers get the shaft from these fuckers. maybe if they didnt constantly screw us, we would be happier.

Well it's obviously just the statement of one very IGNORANT man who's whole job and source of income is said gamers bitching.

(Seriously that's all they hire CM's for.)

But if it were the company... Well shame on them for not wanting bitching.

Sometimes that sort of criticism is best for development. The sad thing is they rarely fix the things we ***** about.

The damn pricks.

"it's a creative industry - the most creative form of entertainment in existence"

How do you measure this exactly? I don't necessarily disagree, but it seems like something that's pretty hard to quantify.

"Can't we all just get along?"

No. Unless you mean in the sense that we can have intelligent discourse without resorting to name-calling, straw-man arguments and circular reasoning. In which case, no.

This is such non-news though. It's like reporting on someone posting a "Who else hates stupid people?"-thread on the forums.

I wouldn't say so... not when the most audible and obnoxious "fans" are the ones claiming to be the "real" gamers and demanding that the industry should care only about them. As annoying as newbies and know-nothings can be, the worst offenders for what Olin is talking about are those calling themselves "hardcore" the loudest.
And thats the percentage that doesn't matter...

Considering all the sales made for Blops, what small percentage of those people will browse the Treyarch forums?

Of that percentage, what fraction will register and create an account?

Of that fraction, what few will be irate and yet willing enough to voice their concerns.

I'm sure there are alot of posters on the Treyarch forum, but its still a drop of water from the bucket. And the rest of the bucket is still buying your damn game so they might as well keep quiet, particularly since CoD isn't even their own IP.

he,s got a point I hope they ignore the fans whining for a new game and take the time to develop a better game (IE taking a few years instead of one year but dont go crazy like 3D realms)

ah it's true
while I haven't played Black Ops enough to really experience any issues with certain deeper gameplay elements and technical issues...I can only say my complaints would be the campaign and the graphics when compared to the Modern Warfare games
but I ain't gonna ***** about stuff for the heck of it
I don't get off on it or anything >:/

I had a telemarketing job of a sort, and having to listen to negative people who just hate you does kinda get to you after a while :/

I imagine someone in the last 100 or so posts has mentioned something along these lines, but I though I'd say it anyway.

Constructive criticism that analyses an issue and lay's out prospective solutions helps a thing to grow, regardless of what that thing may be. Games (and the internet in general) suffer from to many people either without the understanding, will, or the communication skills to define the issue and cite possible solutions (ie. lol WoW sux cos its gay). Not to mention the whole 'I hate x cos its cool to hate x' thing.

I feel for Josh Olin, I really do, I get frustrated just casually perusing some forums, I can't imagine how soul destroying it is to sift through this stuff, knowing the people that have worked on it, and worked hard only to have some ill-educated child whine that they could have done it better.
