Umm... I'm not sure I get it.

Could someone explain this comic to me (beyond explaining what games are being referenced).

EDIT: Also, I see a typo in the first frame! I"ve instead I've
It's parody on Blade Runner's ending.

See that movie NOW!

So, tell me if I'm right: The Rutger Hauer stand-in has been stabbed in the back with a Wii motion-controller and is dying. His references to the PC-only Starcraft series make him the apotheosis of the hardcore gamer. When he releases his spirit, it comes out in the form of the Duck Hunt sprite, thereby implying either:
a) The strict hardcore/casual dichotomy he endorsed was B.S.
b) The poison of casual gaming had already corrupted his gaming soul
Using Blade Runner to undercut the hardcore/casual dichotomy makes sense, of course, because the movie undercuts the dichotomy between humans and androids.

I've seen it the movie once. I enjoyed it. But I don't remember everything about the thing. Forgive me, my memory isn't infinite.
i watched it once a long time ago in a dark and smoke filled room.

The candle that burns twice as bright only burns half as long.
I just used this line in a thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.220992-My-headset-broke#7431871]

There is waaay to many people that haven't seen Blade Runner in here. Like other people, I feel old, and I'm only 22. Even though I was born 6 years after its release, I still watch it every now and then. Its a great movie.

OT: The comic was good, but its in a niche. People need to have seen Blade Runner and played all those now considered 'old skool' games to understand its true meaning.

I think I was called either an ignorant shrew or a heathen when Grey showed this to me before sending it off.

I honestly haven't seen the movie except once a long, long time ago. My memory is very, very bad. I am fairly positive I had to have him explain it to me more than once.

But hey, at least I got the duck hunt reference.

How can people not know this classic Blade Runner quote? Terrible.

Here's the video for those who are too lazy to find it:

Also Duck Hunt works surprisingly well in this situation.
OK, NOW I get it.

Sadly doesn't make it all that funny for me, though. Ah well. Maybe next time.

Im glad someone posted this video. I watched it near a hundred times while working on this page and my respect for Rutger Hauer doubled and tripled with each viewing. I have fallen in love with the scene now and there is just one thing that still bothers me. I didnt really like the movie much. I tried really hard to too and I watched it again while working on the page but H-Fords future detective thing just didnt do it for me.

Okay, I know blade runner. I know duck hunt. So, what's the joke? I mean, if you said "Combine Strider" instead of Mutalisk it would work exactly as well as a Half-Life joke.. Is there anything beyond reference spotting going on?

Protip: the joke isn't about starcraft.

Well, that's what I'm asking: what is the joke about?

that's kind of a loaded question because if I explain it chances are you're just going to point out that a good joke shouldn't need explaining but oh well. The strip is about the percieved decline of hardcore gaming (it follows on from the last strip in case you missed that) PC gamers tend to be very dramatic about the subject so I choose the most dramatic death speech I could think of (something from Shakespeare would have worked just as well but I have a soft spot for blade runner. The comic is just poking fun at the melodrama surrounding the whole issue.

Ah. Well, you're right I can't really fully appreciate it being explained, (although I also couldn't appreciate it not understanding it)

It's very subtle. Very very subtle. I guess part of it is I don't associate hardcore gaming with Quake or Duck Hunt.
