This is going to be suhWEET. I like the idea because really, you can keep grinding and grinding away until you manage to just not screw up long enough to merit the use of a save... Also, kudos to the team for understanding that tougher enemies and fewer resources aren't always the appropriate way to increase the difficult level.

This is going to be like playing an arcade game, you die and you have to start over. for a game of at least 10 hours that's going to make more then a few people smash there game system in little itty bits when he or she dies.

I like the sounds of it, esspecially if like in the first one you have a continue function, so you go into hardcore mode with your gear from the last playthrough.

No checkpoints. You die, you go way back to one of your 3 saves.
Erana plays NetHack, a game where you get a single save slot which you can only use when you're exiting the game, where death is permanent and everything is trying to kill you. I think she's well-orientated with difficulty.
What is this NetHack? It sounds interesting.

Dead Space 1s hardest mode was rediculously easy. I'm looking forward to this!

I suppose it would make the instakill monsters more freaky... A lot more frenzy firing if you know you lose 2 hours worth of progress if you die. I'll check what the prize is on teh interwebz before i decide whether or not to man up and try it.

I understand believe me. All I mean is that it seems weird that you only have three sessions to finish the game. I sure don't have that much time to devote right now.

This 'really cool unlock' that you get for beating hardcore will most likely be something reasonably disappointing like an avatar accessory. If you unlocked some extra game mode or cinematic then maybe I'd be interested.
I agree, but a cinematic would just go up on youtube and that'd be that. A good mini-game might be worth it, but really, having beaten it would be its own reward.
But yeah, from what I've heard, normal's enough of a challenge as it is.

Making a game harder for a hardcore mode is one thing. Perhaps Permadeath, or something. Fewer saves means they expect you to be able to play the game in three sittings- which does not bode well for the game's length.
Good point. Of all things, why prevent you from saving? Im sure they can come up with a better, more clever way of making a game more "hardcore."

Why not go Resident Evil on us and use ink ribbons, or penalise multiple saves?
Genius. Grade us based on the difficulty, number of saves, and kinds of weapons used. I mean, this hardcore mode is essentially the same as if we were going for an old school S rank, but it would be nice to have the difficulty be self-imposed, and the freedom to abandon the challenge if we so choose.

Hopefully the game won't just say "Oops sorry you have no saves left, have fun trying to beat the last 6 hours."

I love you even more dead space. But only question about hardcore mode. Lets say I save at the beginning of the game, and get to the third level with out dieing, but die say half way through. DO I start from my last save, or at the beginning of the level. Since I know there are no checkpoints throughout the level. At least let each level count as one.

It's a rougelike game... http://www.nethack.org/v343/downloads.html
I myself always play it when I'm away as it's requirements are quite low... Never gotten far though... Usually die somewhere at level 15-20...

I remember when Hitman Blood Money did this, except it also made the AI a lot fucking smarter. Also pretty sure there was one more above that where you couldn't save at all.

I need some clarification on what is limited.

Is it really you are only able to save three times in a whole playthrough? If so, I assume the save after beating the game doesn't count. This method sounds frustrating.

Are there only three save slots? This method wouldn't affect my play style. The first Dead Space had many save slots. I only used three of them and rotated through them.

Are there only three save locations throughout the game? As in the ports in game that let you save? I would prefer this method as apposed to the first mentioned. You would have to backtrack a lot but, at least when you really need to save you don't have to worry about eating one of your very limited saves.

I would believe that you will be sent back to the main menu after you die, forcing you to use your save. Forcing you to start back at the beginning of the level defeats the purpose of saying no to checkpoints, as what you just said is a checkpoint.

I find myself reminded of IWBTG, where higher difficulties removed save points. That worked well, in my opinion. Far better than an arbitrary limit of number of times youre allowed to save. Plus, I save games often in case they crash or my power goes out, not because that makes the game easier. This just strikes as more "Annoying mode" than hardcore.
