I didn't enjoy Earthbound that much, so I'm curious if this game is like the epitome of story telling or something.
A new game never rises to popularity that fast, so ya its pretty good. Not for everyone of course there is no game for everyone.

The game has a demo, try it out to see if the mechanics and story are your taste and go from there.

I was really surprised when Undertale got to the quarter finals. Also glad, as I didn't expect it to get that far.

But then it went to the semi finals. I thought it had a good run but it was battling against a Mario game. And even if it had actually gotten to the finals, it'd be against Zelda.

It did get to the finals. And I thought that was it - Zelda was against it, so, it seemed like an automatic loss.

But it didn't lose. It won. It must have been some sort of miracle.

All in all, it was a good show this year.

"Good" is relative. I personally didn't care for it.

Also remember the the time when L-Block won their Character Battle? And the shitstorm they kicked up when Draven won it a few years later?

It's not as though it means anything.

Of all time?!
But what about FF7, COD: Modern Warfare, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon: Color, Half Life, Half Life 2, Half Life 2.5, Smash Bros, Mario: Whatevers, Witcher III, BloondBorne, Ocarina of Time, Dark Souls, World of Warcraft, KOTOR, Mass Effect 2, Portal, Stanley Parable, Five Nights at Freddy's, Gone Home and Shower With Your Dad Simulator?!

Jeez Gamefaqs, you have a new favorite boyband member more often than a 15 year old girl with Amnesia(another BEST GAME EVA!) and bad eye-sight.

Undertale has a rabid fanbase at the moment. It is a really, really good game for the type of people it is for, but it is not the best game ever. But then again, neither is OOT or FF7 or any of the games that routinely get to the top of these polls.

Yeah, no.

Don't get me wrong - was a good game, and I enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed the idea(s) more than the execution though. I think it's great that it's as popular and well regarded as it is, because I think it's deserving....but I don't know if I'd put it anywhere near that title.

I've got a feeling that in 5 years or so, once the dust has settled a little, Undertale will be regarded as a well intentioned thought exercise that could have been executed better, but not necessarily up there with the greats.

I'm not trying to belittle what people have gotten out of the game btw. I understand the emotional attachment, and respect it.

So has saying what the best game of all time is always been something that people couldn't just sit down and have a fun time with?

That's a funny way of saying tetris.Sure it's good, but it's not legendary.

Oh my gawd, who'd even allow a game that was released this year into any kind of voting like this? Time trial, anyone?

It's a lot more like Mother 3 then Earthbound really. Earthbound is really charming but the plot isn't really there for like 90% of the game, until all of a sudden you've gone from pretty childish daydream to terrifying nightmare mode in the last area.

Undertale, OTOH, does have a fair bit of plot and you get more of it by going through the different paths. The tone is also wildly different. The nicer you play, the warmer and happier the game is, whereas playing the genocide route makes Spec Ops: The Line feel like it was being nice to you by the end(that's how fricking depressing it is).

Meh.

I still remember when people were declaring Skyrim to be the greatest game ever.

That's not to say Undertale is bad or undeserving of praise mind you. I don't know as I haven't played it yet.

Apparently the people on gamefaqs are accusing reddit, tumblr, and other social media sites of rigging the votes in favor of Undertale. They accuse them of rallying people to turn out to vote in behalf of Undertale.
Because people did, big time. Hell, I saw people on tumblr begging others who hadn't even played the game to go vote for it. And if you look at Undertale's voting pattern, I'm sure you'd notice a strange trend where it's even/lagging behind it's opponent before suddenly surging ahead.

*Sigh* God, I love the game to death, but the fanbase... Ah well. It's just some voting poll on the internet.

Of course not! This is the Internet and everything must be taken completely seriously!

I dunno, I think this website is kicking up way more of a fuss than it should be. I've been a member of GameFAQs for a decade now, during that time I've voted in more than 95% of their daily polls. I didn't really take them as anything that profound or insightful - it's mostly for fun. And their almost annual battles are just an extension to that, not something that would, or could, hold up as a really serious scientific research.

It's similar to March Mayhem here and I didn't think that was all srs business. Yet, an even more meaningless contest on a different website apparently is more srs.

As a reminder. GameFAQs once voted the Tetris L block as the best video game character ever.

So yeh that's says about how serious this poll was to an extent.
Or it could be because Undertale is a genuinely good game.

Probably better than Ocarina, too.
It very well could be (Though I doubt it). But a Gamefaqs poll is about as valid of a place to prove it as a New Zealand brothel is a valid place to discover the secrets of interstellar travel.

I mean, it could happen, I guess. But probably not, and would you believe it if they did?

As for the poll itself... Undertale shouldn't have even been on the ticket to begin with. It's a brand new game that hasn't had time to really sink in. Gotta give it at least a year so people can find out if its a short term phenomenon or if they find themselves caring about it after a while.

It's not nearly good enough for best game all of all time. For that, it would need to have at least decent graphics, much better music, and not use lame 4th wall breaking to be the "epitome of storytelling".
And it really is not nearly old enough yet to even be considered putting in such a vote.

Though the vote does not matter much, Ocarina has aged really badly as well, so "of all time" is not a great title for it, either.

This is exactly like when The New Movie shows up as #1 in IMDB's "100 Greatest". Like how Guardians of the Galaxy outranks Solaris; Harry Potter 7 1/2 outranks The Graduate. I would wait at least 10 to 15 years before throwing in recent-memory stuff against the time-tested classics.

I mean, it's right there in the title, isn't it? How can something so new compete for X award "of all time"? It barely has any time in it.
