Good-bye Lucas Arts you created one of my favorite games of all time, Star Wars Battlefront 2
Pandemic made Battlefront 2. They've been gone for a good while.

Lucas Arts has been doing pretty much nothing of note for the last decade.
You are right I think I got confused because Lucas arts was the publisher and because they were the ones who tended to work on most Star Wars games

Cue the shitstorm.

LucasArts has made some of my most favourite games, the KotOR, Battlefront and Jedi Knight series respectively, and been part of the greatest MMO concerning personal and overall story and environmental design ever, Old Republic.
It appears my dislike of Disney's Star Wars acquisition continues to rise steadily.
Published. They published those games. KotOR was Bioware/Obsidian. Battlefront was...Pandemic? Jedi Knight was Raven Software.

Just because the publisher shut down doesn't mean these IPs suddenly disappear. It doesn't mean devs suddenly won't be making Star Wars games. It just means the (much maligned of late anyways) publisher is gone.

god dammit Disney! why would you do this?
Because LucasArts has been creatively dead since 2006? All the while losing money? Sounds like good reasons to me. Why keep a company that for the most part, puts out constant below average efforts.
Name recognition. Poor creativity, poor product, and bad management isn't inherent in a company, it's caused by the management team. A take over by Disney removed Lucases direction at the very top, and with some more shakeup they could have turned it back into a decent developer.
Name the last game LucasArts actually developed.

The Force Unleashed 2. Last in house production until 1313.

Yeah...that doesn't raise my confidence at all in them. So the last game they developed was pretty well disliked for being a short mess. And I've seen an awful lot of bitching on these forums about their practices as a publisher.

I don't think you were asking for a vote of confidence. The last GOOD game that was developed in house was Republic Commando.

Oh I wasn't. But there's a lot of bemoaning this move when...why? It's like THQ, these IPs aren't just going away.

Disney was long dead before this stunt, so this is just a nail in their coffin to me.

Screw Disney.

It's a sad day seeing Lucasarts fall from grace and become a smouldering carcass of the glory it once had.

That is.. it WAS a sad day... seven years ago.

R.I.P. LucasArts- 1982-2006

Couldn't have said it better.

A once enjoyable studio and publisher at the beginning of gaming became a tyrant in the modern age of gamig.

On one hand, I feel bad for the employees who are losing their jobs here. OTOH, Lucasarts died a long time ago. Around the time the Phantom Menace came out, the studio shifted from "Making the Best Adventure Games ever and pretty much defining the genre for a decade" to "Look! More star wars games! Buy our star wars games! Everyone loves star wars!".

At that point they pretty much started telling their long standing fanbase to go screw themselves. They Canceled some very promising projects. They forced bioware to rush KOTOR 2 out the door so they could make the christmas deadlines(resulting in the substandard ending we all know). The adventure games that did come out were decidely crappy(Monkey island 4, anyone?). Ron Gilbert and Tim Shafer had long since left to work on their own projects. Fortunatly Taletell picked up the mantle and ran with it.

RIP Lucasarts. Your soul died long ago, your body has finally followed.

Step 1: acquire the property.
Step 2: announce something that gets fans excited
step 3: close down the property.
Step 4: ?????
Step 5: How the hell did you make profit of it.

Well that's a relief. Sort of. Still, I will miss the logo animations.

Sad to hear. Lots of jobs gone, and another long-running game company shut dow.

I was quite looking forward to 1313 too.

I am not sad at all by the studios passing. Yes, it is unfortunate that people are now unemployed, but not only, as other have pointed out, has lucas arts not made anything of worth in house in a very long time, but they also intentionally held back other games outside the studio in ways that directly damaged their own brand. It's like a old dog that keeps breaking its hip jumping down stairs, it was just its time.
Very much this. LucasArts made some great games back in the day, but I'd be surprised if there was anyone left who actually worked on any of those. They've published some decent games more recently, but what have they actually developed themselves that anyone cares about? Battlefront - not LucasArts, KotOR - not LucasArts, Jedi Knight series - not LucasArts, Lego Star Wars - not LucasArts, hell even Kinect Star Wars mentioned in the article as one of theirs wasn't actually made by LucasArts. Almost all the decent Star Wars games have been made by other developers who licensed the IP so getting rid of LucasArts really won't make much difference at all, and aside from a couple of minor releases I've never heard of before looking them up just now, they haven't made games based on other IPs for quite some time.

Somewhat confused how there's anyone feeling bad over Lucas falling over (besides people losing their jobs, that's terrible). Lucas Arts were putting out awful games and helping put Devs like Free Radical out of business (canceling their attempt at Battlefront 3 to have less competition for Force Unleashed 2? Nice job).

They made awesome games, ages ago. Hopefully they'll reassemble some kind of team and we'll see another X-Wing or Tie Fighter, because it sure wasn't going to happen with the current Lucas Arts that's for sure.
