Do I believe in life forming outside the confines of this one, random blue marble we call Earth?
- Sure. It is highly improbable that in the vast universe (infinite, expanding, etc.), as we currently understand it, there's just 'us'. It boggles the mind no matter how smart or dumb one is.

Do I believe in aliens coming here, coming after us and do nasty things with our brains and our nether regions?
- Nope. Come on.

See, after twenty years of giving the very notion a lot of surplus and pastime thought, I cannot shake the impression that certain phenomena within this "we're not alone" subculture are persistent:

1. Some people who choose to believe in aliens are rather alienated from humanity outside the confinements of their own skull. The consumers are stray sheep, odd ones and lost souls. The writers of a lot of this non-scientifical fiction are either rather loopy themselves or they've found a niche in which they can satisfy demand, sell books and have a reason to travel for conventions and enjoy mild stardom.

2. A lot of UFO believers choose to remain ignorant on scientific matters, and they seem to be prone to developing an aversion to common sense. Some even worse than PETA folks, and that's quite something.

3. A number of people that get cited and handed around are obviously plucked from the looney tree, and since they are not good at math, cannot juggle, dance or otherwise impress us, they tell bold tales of being abducted, probed and spat back out. Some are just plain deranged and in need of professional help.

That's that, methinks.

I don't believe aliens exist because its impossible to arrive at that conclusion via rational logic.

I describe a UFO as an unidentified flying object. Not "omg aliens are definitely real".

When you hear hooves, you don't think of zebras.

It's statistically probably that extra-terrestrial life has formed elsewhere.

It isn't statistically probable that they've come to Earth to give people anal-probes.

Of coarse aliens are real. do you really think we are the center of life and creation?
as for the UFO's. its probably just some rich alien kids fucking with us..

The universe is infinite (probably) and the probably of sapient life evolving is 1 or we wouldn't be having this conversation. So, logically, there is other life out there. I just do not believe we have encountered it yet

No life has ever been proven to exist outside of this planet not originating from this planet ever. This is false. No discovery has been made. This 50 habitable planets thing is also wrong an d i have no idea where it came from. Where are these planets? Surrounding what star? The nearest star is 10 light years away that is observed to have planets so i dunno why aliens would sit 10 years travelling light speed (which is basically impossible for a craft) to examine a shit tonne of anuses. Its rediculous. People oftem get confused about if life has or has not been proven to exist outside earth. It has not. Not even close. Not suspected. We have seen earthlike planets really far away. We have seen perhaps water on other planets. Life? No. Never. Not even a smigin, signs of gas that life makes? Maybe.
<a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Centauri>*cough* <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nearest_stars>*cough*. Anyway, before you jump down my throat again, the conditions for life have been hypothesized on Mars and Io. Now I don't mean some sort of incest-humanoid creature, I mean small single-cellular extremophiles. I personally have my doubts about it. Please notice I said "If I remember right..." which means my facts could very easily be wrong. Also, "habitable planet" basically just means means "yeah, that looks like it has liquid water" which mars has at least had at some point in its history(same with Io).

1.4 parsecs isn't very far though is it? Astronomically speaking that is. That's only about four and a half light years. Which in the grand scheme of things is pretty close.
That would be the Alpha Centauri system. The closest stars to Earth (obviously aside from Sol). Planets around the system are only hypothesized at the moment, but if habitable planets existed and life existed on it (though that is not likely) it would be the closest.

I believe alien lifeforms exist, but they might be completely different from us (liker new kinds of microorganisms) and might not be intelligent.

If we were to believe that we are the only intelligent life form in the whole universe, i wouldnt be surprised as human beings are probably the most arrogant beings in the universe.

"Aliens" or simply other life forms beyond the ones found on planet earth definitely exist. If they have visited or not is a completely different argument.

If any of your are interested in this topic, and have a bit of an open mind, try reading Chariots of Fire.

Also, we still have no explanation for crop circles, both Egyptian and Mayan temples, and a number of other oddities that have happened a long time ago.

All i hope, is that when they come, they come in peace!

I think in our near infinit universe the possibility of other life is quite high.
I dont think we are in reach and had ever any contact.

I believe there is life on other planets. and I believe we have been visited by aliens.

I see no reason for why they shouldn't have. arguing that "its too far away" is pointless, since thats just a matter of technology. and asking "there are millions of planets to visit, why care about our tiny insignificant blue planet?" can I answer with "well, it might be that we where the closest planet with life on." or "maybe we looked edible?"

Of course I do.

People overstate just how "otherworldly" aliens are. First off, statistically there is almost a certainty that aliens exist, and intelligent life, even if phenomenally rare, must have evolved somewhere else because nothing happens in a void. If it happened here it can theoretically happen almost anywhere, for obvious reasons (e.g., the laws of physics are identical across the universe so anything happening here must, by definition, be just as possible anywhere else under similar circumstances).

And interstellar travel requires only a large supply of antimatter and the willingness to spend years traveling between systems at relativistic speed. Many, many, many physicists and scientists on Earth have already drawn up a multitude of ways to build antimatter rockets for this very reason and any one of them is equally plausible, given a sufficient technology base...and that only requires they're a few thousand or tens of thousands of years older than we are, or got lucky.

In my opinion, people don't want to accept the possibility of alien life and by extension visitation, because it IS admittedly scary to admit that not only are we not alone but our roommates happy to be hundreds or thousands of years more advanced than us. But from a realistic standpoint nothing makes alien life or visitation "impossible" or even "improbable". Indeed the only improbable thing is that we're alone in the universe, or that every other possible species is completely non-intelligent. It's wishful thinking by people who don't want their apple cart upended.

And there's nothing WRONG with that. But let's not pretend that this is something so bizarre and alien when in fact, scientists on Earth already have drawn up designs for interstellar arks and spacecraft and our civilization only gained space travel a few decades ago. In fact we had realistic designs for nuclear powered spacecraft on the table in the 60s, when they were talking about high-end estimates being ships the size of skyscrapers capable of traveling at nearly 80% of light-speed, IN THE SIXTIES. (no bullshit, look up "Orion Drive") A race a few hundred or thousand years older could easily have built more sophisticated designs--or not, the Orion designs were perfectly serviceable. Oh and yeah, they did kind of look like the spaceships people claim to see...so yeah...aliens exist.
I both agree and disagree with this. First of all, what species would be so insane that it would even TRY using a form of interstellar travel at lightspeed or slower? Nobody wan'ts to get on a ship heading towardsa destination they will never see. That and the cost and delicacy of creating an artificial environment for an organic species to sustain generations of spacefarers is nightmarish and needlessly expensive. Any intelligent beings out there capable of travelling between stars would have had to pass some sort of technological singularity, probably becoming their version of our posthumans/transhumans, or sending machines out for them. Antimatter rockets are a dumb idea good only for in-system travel, not for interstellar travel. Trying to get from earth to the nearest star at lightspeed is like trying to get from boston harbor to england in a rowboat. Unless we can find some sort of fancy schmancy sci-fi type system of reliable FTL travel (hopefully that doesn't involve crossing through Hell or a hell-like place/dimension) Any species that CAN cross the distance between the stars in less than umpteen generations while avoiding the effects of travelling at relative speeds would most likely be more machine than whatever it originally was, if not machine outright.

Considering those facts, I doubt any alien race has ever visited us, and if they did it would have most likely been a very brief visit, made out of curiosity rather than anything else. There is no reason for any intelligent life forms with such technological capabilities to ever bother with us, our planet, or even Sol itself. Any resources they need are found EVERYWHERE else in the universe, most of which doesn't have intelligent hominids capable of nuclear warfare sitting on them. Other than the resource thing, they have no reason to contact us. What would either party gain? I highly doubt we could understand any technology they give us, assuming they WOULD give us high tech shit for no reason. And they have no need of our Space-Caveman tech either. The most we could do is say "Hey how's it goin'?".

Hell yes I believe aliens exist, them not existing is mathematically impossible, and believing they don't exist is the absolute height of human arrogance, to think humanity is that super special, I mean.

Now, do I believe that they've visited us? ...Unlikely. Very Unlikely.

Believe is not the word I'd use.
What words I will use, however, are these: I find it extremely improbable that we are the only intelligent lifeforms in this galaxy, let alone the universe. So improbable, in fact, that I'd label it nearly impossible that they DON'T exist.
As for whether or not any intelligent alien life forms have visited Earth, that is something I do find unlikely, I mean physically travelling around the universe is just so... well... pointless, in the sense that it's a waste of resources.
I do find it plausible that there MIGHT be intelligent lifeforms from planets other than earth that are aware of our existance, though the likelyhood of which is quite low.

Well, technically WE are aliens too. So, yeah, sure. Somewhere out there something might exist. But why do they have to be so super advanced? Maybe they're cavemen. o_O

Nope. Simple probability is the only "evidence" that we're not alone in the Universe. And I have a pretty broad definition of "life". But I don't believe that we're visited/guided/ruled by aliens of any kind. The "aliens" phenomenon is just a mass psychological symptom of our western society's departure from the classical organized religion.
Really now? What is your broad definition of "life"? Where was it you studied and earned your Biology Doctorate to have such authority? Oh and look at this, you seem to have earned a PhD in Psychology too! Wikipedia U sure is getting their monies worth from you!

I've believed Aliens exist for a long time now. We know how vast the universe is; our solar system is one of hundreds of billions in the galaxy and our galaxy is one of who knows how many... Probability is MORE than enough to accept other intelligent life is out there. What people generally fail to remember is that unknown amounts of stars and planets existed LONG LONG LONG before earth even had its' own life. Earth itself is estimated to be 4.5-4.8 billion years old. Most humans would call that old, but you have to think relatively. We know from comparing our sun to others we have seen that our system is YOUNG, practically a teenager compared to others.

Going from year count when Humans first REALLY started to keep records, in 2011 years we achieved a considerable amount. We have even been to our moon and sent probes out further. This is in DESPITE the fact we had several hundred years of Dark Ages, setting us back. Is it really difficult to accept that other life might have been discovering fire while we were still figuring out how to be multi-celled organisms? Who knows what kind of life exists and what kind of technology they created.

ripdajacker said:
Their existence is probable, but that they hide and experiment on us? Unlikely.

Probability theory tells us life exists elsewhere.
Whether or not aliens actively experiment on humans is far out of reach of my knowing. But I still would not be quick to dismiss. Look at humans, how often do we hide and experiment on "lesser" life forms? All the damn time. How often do we hide and experiment on other humans? All the damn time.

How many of these accounts of alien sightings/abductions are true is beyond me. Attribute it towards my general loathing of humanity, but I would not be surprised if there were aliens who had interstellar travel and looked at us much the same way we view farm animals. Like an 8th grader views growing mold for a science project. Easily manipulated and contained, unaware of the universe around them.
