I'm with you. I hate them getting in my way as I (usually) go stealthy first. I use companions as pack mules only. Stand them at the beginning of an area. Tell them to "STAY! Good Boy!" And then loot everything and load them down. Then they can follow me back to my base or the nearest vendor. About the only exceptions have been Veronica and Boone in New Vegas. Both can be told to keep their freaking distance. Boone will stay back and spot or snipe, and Ronnie can be set to "aggressive" so she will go agro so I can snipe and stay hidden for easy crits.RealRT said:

Dogmeat was kind of cool. You sorta felt like that wasteland wanderer badass with a tender streak. Carrying around the Blackhawk on your hip. Wandering from place to place like you and your dog own everything from where you're standing to the horizon. As much as stealth makes a difference in FO3 (or basically any Fallout game) ... I couldn't bring myself to stealth with Dogmeat by my side. Mainly because it was stupidly hard, but Dirty Harry-ing it so much cooler with a killer, yet lovable mutt by your side.
With the DLC it became stupidly powerful so it was only the environment that used to kill 'Meat with any regularity. Occasionally eliciting an angry thud against my desk because oftn times you wouldn't realise after you had wasted 4 or 5 Supers. Realising your companion died a fight back ... you just assume they're tearing out a mutant's throat off screen ... Nope. Reload a save. Start again. Give Dogmeat an angry stare.

I always kept Dogmeat at my place where he could chill. Mostly because he's a freaking annoyance other wise. But the cyberdogs are always cooler, especially K-9 from Fallout 2, Sarcastic cyberdogs are the best.
For some bizarre reason, my Dogmeat was an absolute tank. Maybe it was cause I didn't happen to get him until near the end of the game, but when I did; he could take hits like a champ. At the start I was filled with fear when I saw him charge into a room and attract the attention & gunfire of a dozen Enclave, but I'd gun them all down and see him run back to me with me most of his health still intact, tongue hanging out and tail wagging.

So lost with this and what others said about Dogmeat, he was unkillable, he got into a fight with enclave soldiers in a parkinglot when they set off every car and I watched from a distance trying to snipe as mushroom clouds spread across the lot, my PC at the time chugged and I was like "Yeah, that'd be 1 dead dog" no, he survived, he survived the plasma gunfire, the nukes and came back as happy as ever.

Dogmeat in all Fallouts was always rather squishy. Fallout 3, he got more durable, but still didn't hold too much. It wasn't until Broken Steel Dogmeat forgot that he was a dog and thought he was a four-legged tank (as he got ungodly amounts of health when YOU leveled up) and added a late-game perk that allowed you to have him respawn with 500 extra health if he died.Frank Ocampo Gomez said:

Also, I doubt they'll kill him off. At most they may have something like they did with ED-E in New Vegas where you had to pick if she died to stop the nuclear launch, or if you aimed it at either the NCR or the Legion.

The guy from the enclave read it as Eddy, so to him ED-E was a male, but I read it as Eddie (the girl equivalent that you say/read a bit differently), so I thought of ED-E as a female.
Ultimately though, it depends on what you think ED-E is. Not like an Eye-bot is very gendered one way or the other, right? xD

I remember the one time I tried to get across the wasteland with a bunch of escaped slaves in tow, and after the first encounter I realized this wasn't working out, I couldn't even give them my spare armor and weapons, and looked up the Gamepedia site and found that I can just fast-travel to my destination and wait for them to arrive on their own. Bethesda says "companion", I say "escort mission".
I read this comic, laughed until I was sick, came back four hours later, and it was still g*dd*mn hilarious. And I'm with Lightknight on this: I can't use followers in Bethesda games because I'm one of those weirdos who cares about the safety of his serfs.
I remembering finding Dogmeat my accident, but I was a completely Stealth-based/pacifist character who made one exception for the runt who kept messing her game.
Now I regret doing that because now I know that Dogmeat is a precious pure innocent baby to be protected at all costs (aka: the melee dps).

I'm going to asume that the dog will be with us from the start and we can name him. Bethesda, if my beloved ball of fluff dies in a cutscene with no way for me to save, there will not be a deep enough hole in the multiverse for you to hide from my rage.
Also, I do wish I could go around F3 and NV with Dogmeant and Rex. Fuck the other companions, my Rail gun and 2 dog companions own this wasteland. (well, Boone and Fawkes would also make for the second coming of the apocalipse pair, but that would be so much awesomeness and firepower the world would colapse in on itself)
